Book excerpt: Autorotation is a maneuver that permits a safe helicopter landing when the engine loses power. A catastrophe may occur if the pilot's control inputs are incorrect, insufficient, excessive, or poorly timed. Due to the danger involved, full-touchdown autorotations are very rarely practiced. Because in-flight autorotation training is risky, time-consuming, and expensive, the objective of the project was to develop the first helicopter flight simulator expressly designed to train students in this critical maneuver. A central feature of the project was the inclusion of an enhanced version of the Pilot-Rotorcraft Intelligent Symbology Management Simulator (PRISMS), a virtual-reality system developed by Anacapa Sciences and Thought Wave. A task analysis was performed to identify the procedural steps in the autorotation, to inventory the information needed to support student task performance, to identify typical errors, and to structure the simulator's practice environment. The system provides immediate knowledge of results, extensive practice of perceptual-motor skills, part-task training, and augmented cueing in a realistic cockpit environment. Additional work, described in this report, extended the capabilities of the simulator in three areas: 1. Incorporation of visual training aids to assist the student in learning the proper appearance of the visual scene when the maneuver is being properly performed; 2. Introduction of the requirement to land at a particular spot, as opposed to the wide, flat open field initially used, and development of appropriate metrics of success; and 3. Inclusion of wind speed and wind direction settings (and random variability settings) to add a more realistic challenge in "hitting the spot."Rogers, Steven P. and Asbury, Charles N.Ames Research CenterAUTOROTATION; CUES; FLIGHT SIMULATORS; FLIGHT TRAINING; HUMAN PERFORMANCE; TRAINING SIMULATORS; COCKPITS; EDUCATION; ERRORS; HAZARDS; HELICOPTERS; INVENTORIES; SENSORIMOTOR PERFORMANCE;

Book excerpt: "Early fixed wing research demonstrated that potential cost and training benefits could be derived from simulation-augmented primary flight training. Unfortunately, more recent research in this area has been the exception, not the rule. This is especially true in the case of rotary wing (helicopter) aircrew training research. The present report reviewed the research literature on military aviation transfer of training (TOT) research, and examined the current U.S. Army Initial Entry Rotary Wing (IERW) Program of Instruction. An in-depth review was also conducted on the recent IERW simulation research performed by the Army Research Institute (ARI) Rotary Wing Aviation Research Unit (RWARU). Review of the IERW TOT research showed that a combination of synthetic flight simulation and criterion-based training had the potential for saving training time and costs in the aircraft. Adaptive training aids such as the ARI RWARU Intelligent Flight Trainer, also showed promise. A research program, focusing on revising the current IERW program to optimize the use of simulation, was proposed. This program would include (a) criterion-based instructional strategies, (b) low cost simulation, and (c) investigation of different combinations of simulator vs. aircraft training events, in order to determine the optimal simulator/aircraft training mix."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: The research objective was to determine the effectiveness of a new device concept for helicopter contact flight training and the usefulness of such a device for predicting performance during subsequent flight training. The device was a commercially available captive helicopter attached to a ground effects machine. Two experimental groups of trainees received 3 1/4 or 7 1/4 hours of device training prior to primary helicopter training. In comparison with control groups, both device trained groups (a) were significantly less likely to be eliminated from subsequent flight training for reasons of flying deficiency; (b) required less flight training to attain the proficiency required to solo the helicopter; and (c) received higher grades during early training. Trainees who performed well on the training device tended to perform well during subsequent flight training. Instructors using devices such as this one need not be proficient in the helicopter used for subsequent flight training. (Author).
