Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this work is the application of the engmeermg theory of frictional torque to total hip replacement. The author adhered tenaciously to this theory, involving the use of a small-diameter femoral head, throughout the epoch when the large-diame ter, metal-to-metal design dominated the field. During that considerable period general satisfaction with the early results rendered criticisms of the large-diameter head unwelcome. There was a formidable array of counter criticism: the small head would pierce a film of synovial fluid; the small head would wear the socket too rapidly; the small head would always have a high risk of dislocation; detachment of the trochanter, to achieve precise orientation for the small head, was unacceptable. But all these objections have now been largely overcome. Lubrication of high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWP) on metal is now accepted as being mainly by the boundary regime with thick fluid films playing no part. We now know that HMWP can indeed tolerate the very high stresses imposed by the small head and in tribological theory there may even be some advantage in high stress. Dislocation is now known not to be an automatic sequel to the small head.

This book was released on 2013-09-19 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents analyses of the most commonly reported failure modes of hip stems: loosening and thigh pain; both are attributed to the relative motion and instability at the bone-implant interface due to failure to achieve sufficient primary fixation. The book investigates various factors that could affect primary stability and therefore the long-term outcome of hip arthroplasty. The results complement experimental work carried out in this area as in-vitro experiments have several limitations that could be addressed through computer simulations.

India is on the verge of an "arthritis epidemic" India is one of the twelve strategic focus areas for orthopedic device manufacturers. The implants manufactured abroad and exported to India, after import duty and other taxes, they are unaffordable to Indian patient. This was thus sighted as need to develop implant in India considering indian patient's anatomy.SMP is Sancheti modular Prosthesis for total hip replacement surgery. It has been developed at Sancheti Institute Of Orthopedic research as an indigenous uncemented hip stem by, Dr.K.H.Sancheti. This product is developed in view of reducing THR surgery cost by developing, manufacturing the hip joint at SIOR. Thereby it is expected to facilitate more number of hip replacement surgeries and give better quality of life for more number of patients. Thus it is targeted to cater for increasing need of THR surgeries in India every year.

Book Synopsis Personalized Hip and Knee Joint Replacement by : Charles Rivière
Download or read book Personalized Hip and Knee Joint Replacement written by Charles Rivière and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book describes and illustrates the surgical techniques, implants, and technologies used for the purpose of personalized implantation of hip and knee components. This new and flourishing treatment philosophy offers important benefits over conventional systematic techniques, including component positioning appropriate to individual anatomy, improved surgical reproducibility and prosthetic performance, and a reduction in complications. The techniques described in the book aim to reproduce patients’ native anatomy and physiological joint laxity, thereby improving the prosthetic hip/knee kinematics and functional outcomes in the quest of the forgotten joint. They include kinematically aligned total knee/total hip arthroplasty, partial knee replacement, and hip resurfacing. The relevance of available and emerging technological tools for these personalized approaches is also explained, with coverage of, for example, robotics, computer-assisted surgery, and augmented reality. Contributions from surgeons who are considered world leaders in diverse fields of this novel surgical philosophy make this open access book will invaluable to a wide readership, from trainees at all levels to consultants practicing lower limb surgery

Download or read book Perspectives in Total Hip Arthroplasty written by Saverio Affatato and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Total hip arthroplasty, the most commonly performed orthopedic procedure, is used to replace or reconstruct the hip with an artificial joint. Perspectives in Total Hip Arthroplasty outlines developments in technologies and biomaterials used for this procedure, with a focus on the tribological interactions of the materials used. Part one outlines the history of total hip arthroplasty and goes on to explore advances in techniques and biomaterials. Part two focuses on the tribology of materials used to perform this procedure, explaining the impact of wear on the load-bearing surface, a major cause of failure in hip prostheses. Chapters review a range of materials, including modern biomaterials, hybrid materials, metal, ceramic, and polyethylene. The book also discusses the tribological interactions of these materials when used in total hip arthroplasty. Perspectives in Total Hip Arthroplasty is a key resource for clinicians, researchers, and academics interested in the tribology of total hip arthroplasty, as well as materials researchers, engineers, and academics concerned with the tribology of biomaterials. Covers techniques from innovative surgeons and designs from multinational manufacturers, as well as information on improvements in technologies and biomaterials Discusses the tribology of all the major materials used in total hip arthroplasty

Book Synopsis The Well-Cemented Total Hip Arthroplasty by : Steffen Breusch
Download or read book The Well-Cemented Total Hip Arthroplasty written by Steffen Breusch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-08 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cemented Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) remains one of the most successful procedures in Orthopaedic surgery. It has become very clear that it is the surgical expertise, in particular the quality of the cementing technique, which will affect long-term outcome and success. It is the intention of this book to provide an up-to-date comprehensive assessment of the entire field of cemented THA. Special emphasis has been given to practice-relevant aspects: well-illustrated and detailed operative steps as a practical guideline, a basic science chapter and long-term outcome data are provided. Minimally invasive surgery, modern perioperative management and patient fast tracking are covered. A number of highly respected experts have contributed to this in-depth compilation of the "state of the art" in 2005. This book is written and intended for both, trainees and established arthroplasty surgeons who are dedicated to perform a well-cemented THA.

Book Synopsis Perusal of the Finite Element Method by : Radostina Petrova
Download or read book Perusal of the Finite Element Method written by Radostina Petrova and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The finite element method (FEM) is a numerical technique for finding approximate solutions to different numerical problems. The practical applications of FEM are known as finite element analysis (FEA). FEA is a good choice for analyzing problems over complicated domains. The first three chapters of this book contribute to the development of new FE techniques by examining a few key hurdles of the FEM and proposing techniques to mitigate them. The next four chapters focus on the close connection between the development of a new technique and its implementation. Current state-of-the-art software packages for FEA allow the construction, refinement, and optimization of entire designs before manufacturing. This is convincingly demonstrated in the last three chapters of the book with examples from the field of biomechanical engineering. This book presents a current research by highlighting the vitality and potential of the finite elements for the future development of more efficient numerical techniques, new areas of application, and FEA's important role in practical engineering.
