Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Book excerpt: An important prerequisite for successful conservation is a good understanding of what we seek to conserve. Nowhere is this more the case than in the fight to protect plant biodiversity, which is threatened by human activity in many regions worldwide. This book is written in the belief that tools that enable more people to understand biodiversity can not only aid protection efforts but also contribute to rural livelihoods. Among the most important of those tools is the field guide. Plant Identification provides potential authors of field guides with practical advice about all aspects of producing user-friendly guides which help to identify plants for the purposes of conservation, sustainable use, participatory monitoring or greater appreciation of biodiversity. The book draws on both scientific and participatory processes, supported by the experience of contributors from across the tropics. It presents a core process for producing a field guide, setting out key steps, options and techniques available to the authors of a guide and, through illustration, helps authors choose methods and media appropriate to their context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farmers have developed a range of agricultural practices to sustainably use and maintain a wide diversity of crop species in many parts of the world. This book documents good practices innovated by farmers and collects key reviews on good practices from global experts, not only from the case study countries but also from Brazil, China and other parts of Asia and Latin America. A good practice for diversity is defined as a system, organization or process that, over time and space, maintains, enhances and creates crop genetic diversity, and ensures its availability to and from farmers and other users. Drawing on experiences from a UNEP-GEF project on "Conservation and Sustainable Use of Wild and Cultivated Tropical Fruit Tree Diversity for Promoting Livelihoods, Food Security and Ecosystem Services", with case studies from India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, the authors show how methods for identifying good practices are still evolving and challenges in scaling-up remain. They identify key principles effective as a strategy for mainstreaming good practice into development efforts. Few books draw principles and lessons learned from good practices. This book fills this gap by combining good practices from the research project on tropical fruit trees with chapters from external experts to broaden its scope and relevance.

Book excerpt: This invaluable textbook on contact and occupational skin diseases is written for dermatologists, occupational physicians and practitioners interested in dermatology who are working in the Asia-Pacific region. It consists of contributions from experts in contact and occupational dermatology from many parts of the region. While most other textbooks on this subject cater to Western practitioners, this book is unique in that it focuses on topics relevant to the Asia-Pacific region and the tropics, complementing the Western publications. There are differences in the epidemiology and clinical presentations of contact and occupational dermatitis in the Asia-Pacific countries and the tropics compared to the Western countries. This book addresses the epidemiology and the approaches to the topic in many Asia-Pacific countries. It is a simple practical guide to the principles and practice of managing patients with contact and occupational skin diseases. The editors have included many colour illustrations, to assist dermatologists and other practitioners in using the book more effectively. These illustrations have been painstakingly selected to bring out clinical features as succinctly as possible. Book excerpt: The Rehabilitation of Degraded Agricultural Lands (RDAL) project by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), in partnership with the Government of Sri Lanka through the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment (MMDE), aims to encourage the use of sustainable land management practices in agricultural lands in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s role in this project involves developing innovative financing mechanisms to promote Sustainable Land Management (SLM). In order to achieve this, IUCN has formulated an approach which is laid out in this report the Ecosystem Services Assessment in Selected Agricultural Lands in Kandy, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya Districts of Sri Lanka The objective of this report is to assess the ecosystem services of agricultural landscapes in the three districts (project area) Kandy, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya. By identifying the ecosystem services generated and assessing current land management practices. A rapid assessment was conducted to assess the adoption of sustainable land management practices of four agricultural land use types, identify and map the associated ecosystem services, and utilize existing frameworks and databases to quantify the ecosystem service values. A generalized valuation highlights that these ecosystem services have significant value for both society and for farmers and landowners. Therefore, identifying and implementing mechanisms to encourage farmers to adopt sustainable land management practices on their farmlands can generate both private and public values.

Book excerpt: This comprehensively updated and expanded edition of the region’s best-selling field guide to trees offers much, much more than the highly successful first edition. Fully updated text (including additional species entries) and distribution maps, numerous new photographs and a new 87-page section of full-tree photographs makes this well-loved guide even more indispensable in the field. Southern Africa has a rich variety of tree species, with an estimated 2 100 indigenous species and more than 100 naturalised aliens. Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa describes and illustrates more than 1 000 of these, focusing on trees that are the most common and most likely to be encountered. Species are logically arranged in 43 groups based on easy-to-observe leaf and stem features, and each account is illustrated by full-colour photographs of the plant’s diagnostic parts. The text also touches on the practical uses of the plants.

Book excerpt: This commemorative volume of invited papers in vegetation science covers a full range of topics, objectives, methods and applications, including conservation and management tasks. These require study at different temporal and spatial scales, often simultaneously. Methodology is important in science, since it responds to particular questions and raises others. It is also closely related to the scale of investigation. Chapters in this book illustrate this interdependence, even in basic tasks such as vegetation sampling and description, measurements and mapping. Individual chapters present globally applicable systems, regional syntheses and local analyses and applications, plus conceptual methodologies, including currently debated hot topics. Vegetation types treated include tropical rainforests, temperate forests, dry steppes and scrub and local turf, sedge and moss communities. There are also chapters on re-vegetation, woodlot management, ecology of an invasive species, and trajectory planning in conservation. This book will be useful to both students and practitioners, for its reviews and examples and as a potential textbook suitable for graduate-level courses and seminars.
