Book excerpt: This guide has two main goals: to assist users in classifying sample forest ecosystem sites in the field in the south-east Prince George Forest Region; and to provide interpretations for these site units that will assist in preparing management prescriptions. Following the introduction is a brief discussion of the biogeoclimatic classification system. Chapter 3 contains procedures for site description, identification, mapping, & interpretation. Chapters 4 to 11 present information about the biogeoclimatic units in the Region, tools for identification of biogeoclimatic & site units, descriptions of the site units, and direct management interpretations for the identified site units. Chapter 12 provides indirect interpretations for silvicultural systems and site preparation options, as well as some basic information on ecosystem management.

Book excerpt: This guidebook shows how the distribution of common forest plants changes across British Columbia's northern interior landscape due to variations in climate, terrain, and site & soil conditions. The guide contains information on 215 plant species or groups that occur in the major biogeoclimatic zones of the Prince Rupert, Prince George, and northern Cariboo forest regions. The information, arranged first by category of plant (trees; shrubs; dwarf shrubs, herbs, & ferns; grasses & sedges; mosses, liverworts, & lichens) then by scientific name, is in the form of grids that depict the predominant moisture & nutrient regimes where a species will most likely occur in old or mature forests. Also included are notes on indicator values and habitat associations. Includes index of common & scientific names.

Book excerpt: Ecological Land Classification (ELC) refers to the description of land resources at a range of spatial resolutions (i.e. global to local) and for a range of purposes or values. The emerging science of ELC is in fact a very carefully integrated blend of vegetation and earth sciences, climatology, cartography and ecology with a range of new technologies and methodologies including computer-based geographic information systems, remote sensing and simulation modelling. This publication defines the current `state-of-the-art' of ELC. It provides particular insight into the role of ELC in current and future forest resource planning and management, and emphasizes its application and usefulness at various spatial scales, for a variety of geographic locations, and under a range of management scenarios/constraints. The book is an invaluable and substantial reference source about the current trends in ELC and will be of particular value to ecologists, foresters, geographers, resource managers, wildlife biologists, GIS and remote sensing specialists, educators and students.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this literature review is to summarize policies, including legislation, regulations and guidelines, related to the harvest of woody forest biomass in Canada. The focus of the literature review is on policy that applies to Crown land. The report focusses on policy related to biomass harvesting from logged blocks and roadside debris, rather than purpose-grown plantations, since this is seen as the major new forest biomass energy source, and policy relating to the latter has not been developed in Canada.--Document.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ecological classification system was developed for the mid-boreal ecoregions of Saskatchewan through the analysis of vegetation, soil, site, and forest productivity information. The hierarchical classification system has three levels - ecosite, ecosite phase, and plant community type. Thirteen ecosites are descrived with further details provided by subdivision into ecosite phase and plant community type. A soil type classification system that describes 17 soil types was also developed. Management interpretations were made for drought, excess moisture, hazard, frost heave hazard, soil temperature limitations, vegetation competition, windthrow hazard, productivity, and season of harvest. Colour photos and drawings for 103 common plants of the mid-boreal ecoregions of Saskatchewan are presented.

Book excerpt: This report argues that Canada needs a national ecological community classification that would include all types of biotic communities. The report first provides background on classification science, ecological terminology, and the groups & principles of different ecosystem classifications. It then reviews various approaches to classification of vegetation communities and the ecological classification systems that have been already developed in Canada. The final section discusses the development of a standard national ecological community classification for Canada, proposes a structure of the Canadian Classification of Ecological Communities, and evaluates options for development of a Canadian National Vegetation Classification based on the International Classification of Ecological Communities system.

Book excerpt: "There has been a steady increase in the use of knowledge of natural disturbance dynamics as a basis for forest management policy directed towards maintaining biological diversity. While the merits of this approach are currently being debated, especially in light of climate change, knowledge of natural disturbance patterns provides useful baseline information to assist with landscape level planning and stand level forest practices. This document outlines an ecological land delineation process that focuses on differences in disturbance rate and pattern and successional dynamics for northeast British Columbia. It provides some general principles regarding natural disturbance-based management and, for each delineated unit, detailed information on location, climate, vegetation, natural disturbance dynamics, forest management effects on natural pattern, and recommended forest practices based on the natural disturbance-based management paradigm."--Document.
