Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Field and Laboratory Guide in Physical Nature-Study Look over some good courses of study in nature-study to see that you will be expected as a teacher to lead pupils into those experiences that give them contact with essential scientific facts and phenomena. If possible visit nature-study classes so that you may see that the sort of thing here presented is what you will need when as a teacher you face actual schoolroom work. Before the pupil has completed the junior high school he should be assured of a range of experience with commonplace science that will habituate him to see and to attempt the solution of problems in a scientific way, that will give him command of the most important principles of science and that will make him appreciative of the wonders to be found in his commonplace environment. This book attempts to prepare the teacher to intelligently use the physical materials of interest to the pupil to achieve such ends. It is suggested that not all of the projects outlined be undertaken by each student-teacher but that some be assigned to particular students to work out before the class or undertaken by the instructor as class demonstrations. The author suggests from his experience in handling this work that the projects listed in the Appendix be so assigned and that the remaining ones be done by each student of the class. There is also given in the Appendix an estimate of the apparatus required for the course on the foregoing basis with a class of twenty students. All projects are to be written up by the individual student as if performed by himself, so that each one may feel responsible for those done for him, to save time, by other members of the class. Write up the notes as directed in ink on the blank pages provided, answering all questions asked. Make such diagrams and sketches as are called for, also in ink, preferably Higgins water-proof drawing ink. Follow carefully the directions given for making and operating the appliances and toys. Put yourself as far as possible in the place of the child who is having these experiences. See in them the problems he would see and think them through on the basis of your own observations. It is more important that you cultivate the scientific attitude of mind than that you amass much information. Be neat, accurate, and thoroughgoing in your work; cultivate a workman-like pride in the product of your own handwork. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Field and Laboratory Guide in Biological Nature-Study This field and laboratory guide in biological nature-study is the outcome of many years experience in preparing teachers to handle nature-study in the grades and biology in the secondary schools. It is intended primarily for the use of students who are preparing to teach this work and of teach ers who are already at it. It does not attempt systematically to cover the field of biology but merely to deal with those groups of plants and animals that are of most interest to pupils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field, Laboratory, and Library Manual in Physical Geography In offering this manual to the public the author wishes to express the hope that it may prove helpful to his fellow-teach ers, and that teachers and pupils alike may get from it at least a portion of the pleasure that he has taken in working out its exercises. The manual consists of readings and exercises selected from those which he has used in his own classes in the high school. He hopes that they may be of value in guiding others in their first attempts at scientific investigation and research. Physical geography gives the student a broader outlook than any other science in the curriculum of secondary schools. It is a proper culmination of the nature study of the grammar school, and an appropriate introduction to the more technical and rigid sciences of the high school. Its value arises in part from the fact that it touches nature in so many places. Its many sidedness and its alluring bypaths have tempted pupil and teacher alike. However enjoyable the physical side of it may be, it should not be forgotten that it is geography. Its greatest value arises from the fact that it introduces the student to his geographical environment and suggests to him how he may utilize it. Commerce, history, and even sociology have paid their tribute to this study. The intimate and necessary relation that exists between physical geography and history is the theme of more than one recent and valuable book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Study With Common Things: An Elementary Laboratory Manual It is the intention of this book to provide a laboratory guide for young pupils; a guide which shall introduce them to, and give them practice in, method of procedure in laboratory investigation. Since the foundation of all science lies in observation, the work here given is planned with a view to training and developing the power of accurate observation, of critical examination, rather than the reasoning processes which depend for their results upon the accuracy of the data obtained first through observation. The child must be taught to see before he is taught to explain; he must learn to answer the question what is it? if he is ever satisfactorily to answer why is it? He must get his mental image clear and complete by using all of his senses upon the object before he can understand it, or draw conclusions from what he learns. For this reason many of the observations the pupil is called upon to make in these lessons bear upon no conclusion. They make no attempt to explain anything, but are for the sole purpose of being made. For this reason also many observations lead nowhere logically, many problems suggested remain unsolved, many whys unanswered. For the child this should be so. His work in science should leave him with a sense of accomplishment, but not of finality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Physical Chemistry In presenting this manual of laboratory exercises in physical chemistry, the authors have been prompted by a threefold object: first, to facilitate the task of the instructor in handling large classes of students beginning a course of practical physical chemistry; second, to assist the student in recording his observations in a clear and comprehensive manner; and third, to present such quantitative exercises as will be particularly desirable in the training of students of engineering. In view of the fact that there are, as a rule, available for laboratory work not more than two and one-half hours at a time, it has been found desirable to have the different pieces of apparatus set up beforehand by the instructor. To this end, each experiment is preceded by an exact list of the apparatus and chemicals needed. It is believed that this will materially aid the instructor in assembling the necessary equipment. At the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the laboratory course immediately follows the completion of the theoretical course in physical chemistry, and students are thus prepared to take up the study of any experiment herein listed. It is therefore found practical to prepare the equipment for one or two units of each exercise before the laboratory course starts, and to shift the student successively from one experiment to another. In this way, an excessive amount of preparatory work is avoided. Many of the experiments have been in use in their present form at this Institute, and elsewhere, for a number of years, and have been found to be thoroughly satisfactory. Directions have been made as concise as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once in a great while, as the New York Times noted recently, a naturalist writes a book that changes the way people look at the living world. John James Audubon’s Birds of America, published in 1838, was one. Roger Tory Peterson’s 1934 Field Guide to the Birds was another. How does such insight into nature develop? Pioneering a new niche in the study of plants and animals in their native habitat, Field Notes on Science and Nature allows readers to peer over the shoulders and into the notebooks of a dozen eminent field workers, to study firsthand their observational methods, materials, and fleeting impressions. What did George Schaller note when studying the lions of the Serengeti? What lists did Kenn Kaufman keep during his 1973 “big year”? How does Piotr Naskrecki use relational databases and electronic field notes? In what way is Bernd Heinrich’s approach “truly Thoreauvian,” in E. O. Wilson’s view? Recording observations in the field is an indispensable scientific skill, but researchers are not generally willing to share their personal records with others. Here, for the first time, are reproductions of actual pages from notebooks. And in essays abounding with fascinating anecdotes, the authors reflect on the contexts in which the notes were taken. Covering disciplines as diverse as ornithology, entomology, ecology, paleontology, anthropology, botany, and animal behavior, Field Notes offers specific examples that professional naturalists can emulate to fine-tune their own field methods, along with practical advice that amateur naturalists and students can use to document their adventures.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inductive Elementary Physical Science With Inexpensive Apparatus, and Without Laboratory Equipment The endless source of happiness which this gives is a heritage that Mrs. Shaw has believed will come always to all students who are introduced to the study of the earth by the natural method. The author's educational views were so fully in accord with her own, that she gave him perfect liberty in laying out the work in the Physical Science branches of nature study for pupils from twelve to eighteen years of age. The results reached have been such that many of the best educators of Boston and vicinity have recommended and urged that the course be given a wider field of usefulness. While this work has been largely the result of class-room experiment, indebtedness is freely acknowledged to various sources, especially to the excellent little manual on Home-made Apparatus, by Prof. John F. Woodhull, of the New York Teachers' College. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Physics: A Guide for the Physical Laboratory It is a mistaken supposition, unfortunately prevailing largely among science teachers, that the Laboratory Method requires a student to discover for himself the important laws and truths of the physical world. The race has been centuries in reaching its present knowledge of Nature's laws, and it is evidently unreasonable to expect the untrained mind of a boy or girl to discover and formulate in one year, or even in several years, the principles discussed in an elementary book on Physics. The office of the school physical laboratory is not one of p/rlginal discovery; but, in the first place, to put the student in the best possible position to see What he looks at, in order that fact-knowledge may be added to word knowledge in the most impressive way by having the head and hand work and learn together; and, in the second place, to tram the faculties to exactness of obser vation, independence and carefulness in forming conclu sions, and good judgment in weighing evidence.
