Valerie Abrahamsen, Jorunn Jacobsen Buckley, John Dominic Crossan, Mary F. Foskett, Beverly Roberts Gaventa, Deirdre Good, Jorunn Økland, Jane Schaberg, George H. Tavard, John van den Hengel, Pieter W. van der Horst, and George T. Zervos offer contributions that address such topics as the understandings of sexuality, the divine feminine, soteriology, first-century social history, christology, Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox hermeneutics, ecumenical and interfaith relations, and the meaning of "virginity." Book excerpt: The eighth volume in this series continues the exploration of women's representations and roles, constructions of gender, and attitudes toward sexuality in the early church. Jim Aageson, Judith Applegate, Warren Carter, Pamela Eisenbaum, Ruth Hoppin, Luke Timothy Johnson, Catherine Clark Kroeger, Magda Missett van de Weg, John Elliott, Betsy Bauman-Martin, and Timothy Cargal tackle a variety of complex issues involving slavery, prostitution, widows, church leadership, suffering, women's agency, and Evangelical responses to the so-called "texts of terror". This volume advances discussion on these often overlooked and misunderstood general letters.

Book excerpt: Hail Mary? examines the sexist and misogynist themes that underlie the socially constructed religious imagery of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Maurice Hamington explores the sources for three prominent Marian images: Mary as the "the blessed Virgin," Mary, the "Mediatrix"; and Mary, "the second Eve." Hamington critiques these images for the valorization of sexist forces with the Catholic Church that serve to maintain systems of oppression against women. In challenging dominant, religious representations of Mary, Hamington surveys a variety of emerging reinterpretations of Mary. He then provides a framework for further study of "non-alienating" images of Mary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Virgin Mary, The Blessed Mother, The Mother of Jesus, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Good Help, Queen of Heaven-these are but a sampling of the names attributed to a peasant woman named Mary of Nazareth in the Christian Gospel tradition. For many, she is a person of biblical history, a continuation of goddess mythology across cultures, and a figure of veneration in the Roman Catholic Church. While Mary has traditionally been a symbol for the passive obedience, purity and submission to the role of motherhood for women, a growing number of feminist scholars and theologians understand her as having a prophetic voice in the struggle for human liberation, and that she also serves as a symbol/metaphor of the Divine Feminine in Western Christianity. Since Protestant Christianity has generally reduced Mary's role and place in the church to liturgical celebrations at Christmas and Easter, the purpose of this study is to examine the Marian tradition in its various contexts-in history, biblical scholarship, theology, as well as art and iconography-and explore the relationship between Episcopal women and their understanding of Our Lady. Based in a theoretical framework of hermeneutics (specifically that of fidelity and suspicion), I engage in a feminist collaborative inquiry which explores who Mary is as a heuristic concept. This study includes journal entries and group conversations with a sampling of women from The Episcopal Church, explores my own journey with Mary as an Episcopal priest, and concludes with the development of new iconography that speaks to the various ways Episcopal women look to her as a model.

Book excerpt: "In the 2004 Madeleva Lecture, Mary Ann Hinsdale uses the lens of her own life experience to tell the story of how visionary and prophetic women set in motion the important institutional structures that have allowed women to shape Catholic theology in North America over the past fifty years. She pays particular attention to issues and problems facing women theologians in the Catholic Church today, such as the implications of the changing demographics of women theologians; women's impact on the "theological establishment"; the reception of feminism and feminist theology by the hierarchy; and the unmet intercultural challenges posed by those "on the margins," as well as women theologians' response to them. Coming at the beginning of a new papacy, Hinsdale's compelling narrative is especially timely for a consideration of the future of women in the Catholic Church."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an analysis of and response to the feminist theology of Rosemary Radford Ruether. It covers her theological methodology by focusing on her approach to tradition, experience, and normativity. It also discusses her analysis of the origin, nature and development of patriarchy, and her approach to key topics in systematic theology such as anthropology, evil, mariology, ecclesiology, Christology, nature, eschatology, and God. The unifying focus of this wide-ranging study is the relationship between Ruether's feminist and Christian commitments. The author's ideas on what it means to develop a feminist theology in a distinctively Christian way (and a Christian theology in a distinctively feminist way) are worked out in the same areas of systematic, philosophical and biblical theology in which Ruether's thought is analyzed. Co-published with the Institute for Christian Studies.
