For although reporter Zach Wright had been too confused to ask the name of his beautiful Good Samaritan—and despite Rebecca's attempt to remain anonymous—Zach soon discovered his angel of mercy. Like sunlight warming his chilly soul, Rebecca reminded him that true goodness still endured. Zach prayed that God's grace would shine on him once more. For how else could the world-weary loner give Rebecca what her heart most wanted...a family of her own.

Book excerpt: After leaving home at a young age and defying her parents to marry the dashing Garrett Maupin, Martha Maupin's future became bound up with some of the most extraordinary events in antebellum American history, eventually leading to her journey to a new life on the Oregon Trail. After Garrett Maupin died in 1866, leaving her alone on the frontier with their many children, Martha Maupin was torn between grief and relief after a difficult marriage. Lone mothers had few options in her day, but she took charge of her own dream and bought her own place, which is now one of the few Century Farms in Oregon named for a woman. A Place of Her Own is the story of the author’s great-great-grandmother’s daring decision to buy that farm on the Oregon frontier after the death of her husband--and story of the author's own decision to keep that farm in the family. Janet Fisher's journey into the past to uncover her own family history as she worked to keep the property interweaves with the tales from her ancestors' lives during the years leading up to the Mexican-American War in the East and her great-great-grandmother's harrowing journey across the Oregon Trail with her young family and finally tells the tale of Martha's courageous decision to strike out on her own in Oregon. This book will hold special appeal for Oregon Trail buffs and the many people in this country whose ancestors took that terrible trek, as well as others interested in American history of that period.

Book excerpt: By the winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature Abbas has never told anyone about his past; about what happened before he was a sailor on the high seas, before he met his wife Maryam outside a Boots in Exeter, before they settled into a quiet life in Norwich with their children, Jamal and Hanna. Now, at the age of sixty-three, he suffers a collapse that renders him bedbound and unable to speak about things he thought he would one day have to. Jamal and Hanna have grown up and gone out into the world. They were both born in England but cannot shake a sense of apartness. Hanna calls herself Anna now, and has just moved to a new city to be near her boyfriend. She feels the relationship is headed somewhere serious, but the words have not yet been spoken out loud. Jamal, the listener of the family, moves into a student house and is captivated by a young woman with dark-blue eyes and her own, complex story to tell. Abbas's illness forces both children home, to the dark silences of their father and the fretful capability of their mother Maryam, who began life as a foundling and has never thought to find herself, until now. ________________________ 'Gurnah is a master storyteller' FINANCIAL TIMES 'Gurnah writes with wonderful insight about family relationships and he folds in the layers of history with elegance and warmth' THE TIMES

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fast-paced, unpredictable, and high-risk nature of crisis intervention creates critical ethical dilemmas that can result in personal harm and professional liability if not handled appropriately. Applying a traditional model of ethical decision-making is often impractical when time is limite and decisions must be made quickly. This counseling tool kit offers a new operational approach for integrating ethical decision-making in crisis intervention. Following detailed discussions of crisis intervention within the framework of realtional-cultural theory, a triage assessment system, and an original ethical decision-making protocol, nine diverse case studies in hospital, telebehavioral health, school, clinical, and public settings are presented. Students and practitioners will build a repertoire of ethical decision-making skills to de-escalae crisis incidents and provide an appropriate level of support to individuals experiencing crisis. *Requests for digital versions from ACA can be found on www.wiley.com *To purchase print copies, please visit the ACA website https://imis.counseling.org/store/ *Reproduction requests for material from books published by ACA should be directed to [email protected]

Book excerpt: Solitary Journey Hilary Blake, a kindergarten teacher from Branson, Missouri, suffered through a six-year marriage with a man who complained about everything he could think of, including the way she dusted the ivy. She eventually discovered he did not love her when she was six months into her first pregnancy. He denied the baby was his and announced he was gay. His abuse caused Hilary to loose her baby, and Hilary divorced him. She was on the verge of a nervous breakdown when she decided to take a trip through Texas as soon as school was out. She had almost three months vacation time and she started on her journey through the Lone Star State. When she met Josh Timmons, who was supremely handsome, she decided to relax and experience sexual pleasure for a change. Though Josh usually used protection, he neglected to use any with Hilary, and because she had been married so long, she didn't think of it. This resulted in pregnancy. Josh was extremely jealous of Hilary and he was eager to marry her. But he was still in the University of Texas working on his Ph.D. Hilary refused to let him quit school until his education was complete. She journeyed through Texas looking for a teaching job, which seemed to evade her at every stop. She did encounter another man, Ed Wheatly, who seemed perfect. Before it was over, she questioned the wisdom of marrying either man. She decided to have and rear her child alone, if only she could find a job. It didn't turn out that way at all. The trip she took was indeed a Solitary Journey.
