Children and youngsters are sexually exploited all around the world. The International Labor Organization estimates that more than 4.000 children are being submitted to the sex trade in the Triple Frontier Area between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. This project has the objective of investigating how boys and girls experience sexual exploitation in the border region and the meaning of these practices in their life's journey. Interest in this subject came from hearing sessions and professional experience in the "Sentinel Program" and from work as psychologist in shelters in Santa Catarina and Paraná. To understand the implications of sexual exploitation in places on the Triple Frontier Area on the life of children and youngsters, the chosen method was ethnography, prioritizing hearing sessions and observation in those places. In the boy's and girl's accounts family sexual violence, precarious life conditions and the desire for social mobility became evident as factors for their involvement in the sex trade. This activity itself constitutes a survival strategy and a search for affection because of the abandonment and human vulnerability which in certain social conditions has aggravated effects. The border between the countries makes State intervention in the sites where sexual exploitation occurs difficult. However, care institutions were pointed by the interviewed as places that, many times, refresh the violence and stigmatize children instead of offering protection. The biggest challenge is to reduce the stigma of this experience, through more careful, safe, and respectful professional and institutional intervention. The extreme vulnerability and lack of protection experienced by boys and girls who told their stories, point to the urgency of structural changes in countries located at these borders, where public policy towards the protection of children and youngsters is not sufficient and efficient enough to hinder the sex trade of infantile bodies and to create conditions for providing survival alternatives for the families, children and youngsters who live there.

Book excerpt: Descended from a long and ancient lineage, tapirs are important tropical forest seed dispersers. However, today, all species of tapirs are threatened to various degrees by habitat destruction and hunting. This action plan was written with wildlife biologists, ecologists, administrators, educators and local conservation officials in mind and is aimed at those countries with tapir populations. It provides a brief natural history of each species and its objective is to aid in their conservation by catalyzing conservation action. In addition, it is hoped that the contents of the plan will stimulate further research into this fascinating group of animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graffiti and street art images are ubiquitous, and they enjoy a very special place in collective imaginary due to their ambiguous nature. Sometimes enigmatic in meaning, often stylistically crude and aesthetically aggressive, yet always visually arresting, they fill our field of vision with texts and images that no one can escape. As they take place on surfaces and travel through various channels, they provide viewers an entry point to the subtext of the cities we live in, while questioning how we read, write and represent them. This book is structured around these three distinct, albeit by definition interwoven, key frames. The contributors of this volume critically investigate underexplored urban contexts in which graffiti and street art appear, shed light on previously unexamined aspects of these practices, and introduce innovative methodologies regarding the treatment of these images. Throughout, the focus is on the relationship of graffiti and street art with urban space, and the various manifestations of these idiosyncratic meetings. In this book, the emphasis is shifted from what the physical texts say to what these practices and their produced images do in different contexts. All chapters are original and come from experts in various fields, such as Architecture, Urban Studies, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology and Visual Cultures, as well as scholars that transcend traditional disciplinary frameworks. This exciting new collection is essential reading for advanced undergraduates as well as postgraduates and academics interested in the subject matter. It is also accessible to a non-academic audience, such as art practitioners and policymakers alike, or anyone keen on deepening their knowledge on how graffiti and street art affect the ways urban environments are experienced, understood and envisioned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance as Research (PAR) is characterised by an extraordinary elasticity and interdisciplinary drive. Performance as Research: Knowledge, Methods, Impact celebrates this energy, bringing together chapters from a wide range of disciplines and eight different countries. This volume focuses explicitly on three critical, often contentious themes that run through much discussion of PaR as a discipline: Knowledge - the areas and manners in which performance can generate knowledge Methods - methods and methodologies for approaching performance as research Impact - a broad understanding of the impact of this form of research These themes are framed by four essays from the book's editors, contextualising their interrelated conversations, teasing out common threads, and exploring the new questions that the contributions pose to the field of performance. As both an intervention into and extension of current debates, this is a vital collection for any reader concerned with the value and legitimacy of performance as research.

Book excerpt: "Cutting, burning, branding, and bone-breaking are all types of self-injury, of the deliberate, non-suicidal destruction of one's own body tissue, a practice that emerged from obscurity in the 1990s and spread dramatically as a typical behavior among adolescents. Long considered a suicidal gesture, The Tender Cut argues instead that self-injury is often a coping mechanism, a form of teenage angst, and expression of group membership, and a type of rebellion, converting unbearable emotional pain into manageable physical pain. An important portrait of a troubling behavior, The Tender Cut illuminates the meaning of self-injury in the 21st century, its effects on current and former users, and its future as a practice for self-discovery or a cry for help."--P.
