Moreover, the models have a variety of representations, from traditional mathematical notations to diagrammatic and immersive depictions. Collecting all of these expressions of dynamic models, the Handbook of Dynamic Sy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As high-tech markets mature, replacement purchases inevitably become the dominant proportion of sales. Despite the clear importance of replacement, little work examines the separate roles of adoption and replacement. The analysis is complicated by the fact that a consumer's decision to replace a product is dynamic because high-tech markets undergo both rapid improvements in quality and falling prices. To address these issues, I develop and estimate a dynamic consumer demand model that explicitly accounts for the replacement decision when consumers are uncertain about both future product price and quality. Using a unique data set from the PC processor industry, I show how to combine aggregate data on sales and product ownership to infer replacement behavior. The results reveal substantial variation in replacement behavior over time, and this heterogeneity provides an opportunity for managers to tailor their product introduction and pricing strategies to target the particular segment of consumers that is most likely to replace in the near future.

Book excerpt: With the expansion of knowledge-based industries, such as computer software and services, the issue of intellectual property rights (IPRs) is growing in importance. This paper explores this issue in relation to developing countries, with a view to expanding their economic opportunities in this sector. It demonstrates the growing importance of computer software by examining recent global trends in copyright-based industries, especially the associated growing demand for all information-based industries since the mid-1980s and the potential for developing countries to enter global markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COMPUTER MODELS OF PROCESS DYNAMICS Comprehensive overview of techniques for describing physical phenomena by means of computer models that are determined by mathematical analysis Computer Models of Process Dynamics covers everything required to do computer based mathematical modeling of dynamic systems, including an introduction to a scientific language, its use to program essential operations, and methods to approximate the integration of continuous signals. From a practical standpoint, readers will learn how to build computer models that simulate differential equations. They are also shown how to model physical objects of increasing complexity, where the most complex objects are simulated by finite element models, and how to follow a formal procedure in order to build a valid computer model. To aid in reader comprehension, a series of case studies is presented that covers myriad different topics to provide a view of the challenges that fall within this discipline. The book concludes with a discussion of how computer models are used in an engineering project where the readers would operate in a team environment. Other topics covered in Computer Models of Process Dynamics include: Computer hardware and software, covering algebraic expressions, math functions, computation loops, decision-making, graphics, and user-defined functions Creative thinking and scientific theories, covering the Ancients, the Renaissance, Galileo, Newton, electricity and magnetism, and newer sciences Uncertainty and softer science, covering random number generators, statistical analysis of data, the method of least squares, and state/velocity estimators Flight simulators, covering the motion of an aircraft, the equations of motion, short period pitching motion, and phugoid motion Established engineers and programmers, along with students and academics in related programs of study, can harness the comprehensive information in Computer Models of Process Dynamics to gain mastery over the subject and be ready to use their knowledge in many practical applications in the field.
