Book Synopsis The Dream Frontier by : Mark J. Blechner
Download or read book The Dream Frontier written by Mark J. Blechner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dream Frontier is that rare book that makes available the cumulative wisdom of a century's worth of clinical examination of dreams and then reconfigured that wisdom on the basis of research in cognitive neuroscience. Drawing on psychodynamic theorists and neuroscientific researchers with equal fluency and grace, Mark Blechner introduces the reader to a conversation of the finest minds, from Freud to Jung, from Sullivan to Erikson, from Aserinksy and Kleitman to Hobson, as the work toward an understanding of dreams and dreaming that is both scientifically credible and personally meaningful. The dream, in Blechner's elegantly conceived overview, offers itself to the dreamer as an answer to a question yet to be asked. Approached in thi open-ended manner, dreams come to reveal the meaning-making systems of the unconscious in the total absence of waking considerations of reality testing and communicability. Systems of dream interpretation arise as helpful, if inherently limited, strategies for apprehending this unconscious quest for meaning. Whereas students will appreciate Blechner's concise reviews of the various schools of dream interpretation, teachers and supervisors will value his astute reexamination of the very process of interpretating dreams, which includes the manner in which group discussion of dreams may be employed to correct for individual interpretive biases. Elegantly written, lucidly argued, deftly synooptic but never ponderous in tone, The Dream Frontier provides a fresh outlook on the century just passed along with the keys to the antechambers of the new century's reinvestigation of fundamental questions of conscious and unconscious mental life. It transcends the typical limits of interdisciplinary reportage and brings both researcher and clinician to the threshold of a new, mutually enriching exploration of the dream frontier in search of basic answers to basic questions.

Book Synopsis The Interpretation of Dreams by : Sigmund Freud
Download or read book The Interpretation of Dreams written by Sigmund Freud and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Freud's greatest and most important work in which he introduces his theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation, and also first discusses what would later become the theory of the Oedipus complex, and it is widely considered one of his most important works. Freud said of this work, "Insight such as this falls to one's lot but once in a lifetime." Dreams, in Freud's view, are all forms of "wish fulfillment" — attempts by the unconscious to resolve a conflict of some sort, whether something recent or something from the recesses of the past. Because the information in the unconscious is in an unruly and often disturbing form, a "censor" in the preconscious will not allow it to pass unaltered into the conscious. Freud refers to dreams as "The Royal Road to the Unconscious". He proposed the 'phenomenon of condensation' - the idea that one simple symbol or image presented in a person's dream may have multiple meanings. Book excerpt: Do you ever find yourself daydreaming, thinking about all the other things you could be doing? Maybe its starting your own bakery. Maybe its pursuing a music career. Maybe its taking that mission trip you have always wanted to take. Maybe its something as simple as traveling. Throughout it all there is some underlying doubt or hesitationdoubt over accomplishing these dreams and hesitation due to the fear of pursuing your dreams. This fear is paralyzing because of what you could lose: the loss of friends, the loss of a job, the loss of security, or the loss of family. These are all aspects of life that we hold dearly. So how do you attain these dreams and make them more than mere illusions? This is the daily question we ask ourselves. This is the daily question I ask myself. Through work and family responsibilities, we delay pursuit of finding the answer. We decided a long time ago that these dreams would remain elusive. But what if they could be achieved? The Pursuit of You will show you the importance and keys to determining why these dreams are important to you. Once you know the why, the how does not matter. It will no longer be based on sheer willpower. It will be based on an instinctive drive guiding you along a path you never thought existed. The experiences and struggles the author tells reflect real-life hindrances to accomplishing these dreams. The author establishes the importance of the foundation of the why behind these dreams in order for you to achieve the life you have always wanted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In creating psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst, Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association (in which patients report their thoughts without reservation and in whichever order they spontaneously occur) and discovered transference (the process in which patients displace on to their analysts feelings derived from their childhood attachments), establishing its central role in the analytic process. Freud's redefinition of sexuality to include its infantile forms led him to formulate the Oedipus complex as the central tenet of psychoanalytical theory. His analysis of his own and his patients' dreams as wish-fulfillments provided him with models for the clinical analysis of symptom formation and the mechanisms of repression as well as for elaboration of his theory of the unconscious as an agency disruptive of conscious states of mind. Freud postulated the existence of libido, an energy with which mental processes and structures are invested and which generates erotic attachments, and a death drive, the source of repetition, hate, aggression and neurotic guilt. In his later work Freud drew on psychoanalytic theory to develop a wide-ranging interpretation and critique of religion and culture. Psychoanalysis remains influential within psychotherapy, within some areas of psychiatry, and across the humanities. As such it continues to generate extensive and highly contested debate with regard to its therapeutic efficacy, its scientific status and as to whether it advances or is detrimental to the feminist cause. Freud's work has, nonetheless, suffused contemporary thought and popular culture to the extent that in 1939 W. H. Auden wrote, in a poem dedicated to him: "To us he is no more a person / now but a whole climate of opinion / under whom we conduct our different lives".

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "PSYCHOANALYSIS FOR BEGINNERS: A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis & Dream Psychology" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Introduction to Psychoanalysis is a set of lectures given by Sigmund Freud 1915-17, which became the most popular and widely translated of his works. The 28 lectures offered an elementary stock-taking of his views of the unconscious, dreams, and the theory of neuroses at the time of writing, as well as offering some new technical material to the more advanced reader. In these three-part Introductory Lectures, by beginning with a discussion of Freudian slips in the first part, moving on to dreams in the second, and only tackling the neuroses in the third, Freud succeeded in presenting his ideas as firmly grounded in the common-sense world of everyday experience. Freud built his complete method of psycho-analysis around his dream theories. In the book Dream Psychology: Psychoanalysis for Beginners Freud explains the buried meanings inside dreams, particularly the drive and the connection between the unconscious and conscious, blocked sexual cravings, and the significance of dreams to our overall well-being.
