Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text focuses on the relationship of Hong Kong with the adjacent Chinese province Guangdong, the territories most directly involved in the 1997 transfer of Hong Kong to Chinese rule. The socio-economic, political and cultural impact of this crucial link and the implications for the future of both Hong Kong and China are studied. A multi-disciplinary approach is taken to examine the complexity of economic, political and cultural transformation of the Hong Kong-Guangdong link and this book presents a historical perspective to trace the long-term structural transformation. The dynamics of the integration process between the two territories is also explored.

Book Synopsis Hong Kong's Transition to Chinese Rule by : Ralf Horlemann
Download or read book Hong Kong's Transition to Chinese Rule written by Ralf Horlemann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty, it appears that the 'high degree of autonomy' promised to Hong Kong is limited in many ways. China's reservations about the development of democracy in Hong Kong lies at the heart of the problem. The conceptual inadequacies set out in the Basic Law, Hong Kong's mini-constitution, show a correlation between a lack of democracy and a loss of autonomy. This book argues that genuine autonomy from the central government in Beijing is impossible without a democratic system in Hong Kong. Developments since the handover have, however, demonstrated that democratic trends have been halted and even reversed and that democracy is not likely to be established in Hong Kong in the near future.

Book Synopsis A Modern History of Hong Kong by : Steve Tsang
Download or read book A Modern History of Hong Kong written by Steve Tsang and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major history of Hong Kong tells the remarkable story of how a cluster of remote fishing villages grew into an icon of capitalism. The story began in 1842 with the founding of the Crown Colony after the First Anglo-Chinese war - the original 'Opium War'. As premier power in Europe and an expansionist empire, Britain first created in Hong Kong a major naval station and the principal base to open the Celestial Chinese Empire to trade. Working in parallel with the locals, the British built it up to become a focus for investment in the region and an international centre with global shipping, banking and financial interests. Yet by far the most momentous change in the history of this prosperous, capitalist colony was its return in 1997 to 'Mother China', the most powerful Communist state in the world.
Book Synopsis Hong Kong and British culture, 1945–97 by : Mark Hampton
Download or read book Hong Kong and British culture, 1945–97 written by Mark Hampton and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the British cultural engagement with Hong Kong in the second half of the twentieth century. It shows how the territory fit unusually within Britain’s decolonisation narratives and served as an occasional foil for examining Britain’s own culture during a period of perceived stagnation and decline. Drawing on a wide range of archival and published primary sources, Hong Kong and British culture, 1945–97 investigates such themes as Hong Kong as a site of unrestrained capitalism, modernisation, and good government, as well as an arena of male social and sexual opportunity. It also examines the ways in which Hong Kong Chinese embraced British culture, and the competing predictions that British observers made concerning the colony’s return to Chinese sovereignty. An epilogue considers the enduring legacy of British colonialism. This book will be essential reading for historians of Hong Kong, British decolonisation, and Britain’s culture of declinism.
Book Synopsis The Impact of China's 1989 Tiananmen Massacre by : Jean-Philippe Béja

This book assesses the impact of the movement, and of the ensuing repression on the political evolution of the People’s Republic of China. It discusses how the events of 1989 are remembered and have affected China’s international relations and diplomacy; how human rights, law enforcement, policing, and liberal thought have developed over two decades.
