It centers on one question: "What is the mission of the church?" From culturally relevant, emerging congregations to strategic methods of organization and outreach, many claim they have the answer. They say the mission must become "missional." Yet the churches of North America continue to struggle. Uncertainty is growing. "What does it really mean to be 'missional'"? Competing claims abound. "Get the message out!" "Get the message right!" Great confusion has set in, particularly in the postmodern North American church. The Gospel is getting lost. Yet, throughout the ages, the creedal confession of the Holy Christian Church has carried her through uncertainty and struggle. The Apostles' Creed has steadied and stayed the mission of the church for centuries. It centers on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit--the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. This book celebrates the historic mission of the Holy Christian Church, and it invites the North American church to do the same.

Book excerpt: For the first time, The Challenge to Great Commission Obedience gathers the greatest missionary-inspiring messages from International Mission Board president Jerry Rankin. Originally spoken through the years to men and women heading abroad to do the Lord's work, these commissioning words stand the test of time and ring true to all believers wherever they are today. With deep conviction, Rankin passionately shares the purpose, the power, and the promise of the Great Commission. Pointing always to Jesus as the light of the world, we are reminded of our blessed call to carry that light everywhere from the Americas to Zimbabwe and all points in between, to everyone in need of a Savior whose love and mercy are everlasting. Every believer hears the call; this enthusiastic book will bring great clarity and understanding to how we proceed in our answering of it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Great Commission" is a book written by Charles Henry Mackintosh, a Christian preacher and author, first published in the 19th century. The book explores the biblical passage known as the Great Commission, found in the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus instructs his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations. Mackintosh's work delves into the significance of this commandment and its implications for believers in spreading the message of Christianity throughout the world. Drawing from biblical exegesis and personal reflection, he offers insights into the responsibilities and challenges faced by Christians in fulfilling this mission. Through a combination of theological analysis and practical guidance, Mackintosh encourages readers to embrace their role as ambassadors of Christ and to actively engage in evangelism and discipleship. He emphasizes the importance of faithfulness, perseverance, and reliance on the Holy Spirit in carrying out the Great Commission. "The Great Commission" serves as a call to action for Christians to heed Jesus' command to spread the gospel and make disciples of all nations. It continues to inspire believers to fulfill their missionary mandate and share the message of salvation with others, making it a foundational text in Christian literature.

Book excerpt: The angel who visited Mary, this young lady who is engaged to Joseph, came to bring her the good news that she will be pregnant and will give to the world a son whom we call Emmanuel, that is to say, God with us. The birth of Jesus Christ was a subject of joy for all nations according to Isaiah's prophecy. There was a joy not only on Earth but first in heaven; the shepherds, the Angels were in joy at the announcement of the news by the Angel Gabriel. The Angels returned to heaven singing and praising the Creator because the Savior had just born. This is the same joy that is felt when a sinner repents. It is the image of the new birth that occurs in the heavenly government. Christ illustrates it in the parable of the lost sheep. There had a party when this sheep was found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Thomas A. Lambie was called a “loose cannon” by his Presbyterian missionary colleagues in British Sudan in 1907 because of his energy, vision, and spiritual fervor. Through combined gifts of diplomacy and medical prowess, Lambie, together with two missionary colleagues, launched the Sudan Interior Mission in Ethiopia in 1927. The goal of this enterprise was to evangelize the primal religionists of southern Ethiopia. During ten years of pioneering mission efforts by Lambie and nearly one hundred SIM cohorts, a young church of nearly fifty baptized believers was formed. The missionaries were then evicted from Ethiopia by the invading Italians in 1936. This modest beginning became the foundation for what is today the vibrant Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church, the largest evangelical denomination in Ethiopia.

Book excerpt: Many churches in America today want to be powerful, relevant, and influential in personal and social transformation. But whose kingdom are we building? God's? Or our own? A plethora of programs for outreach, discipleship, and spiritual disciplines are available at any bookstore and on countless websites. Yet what we need most is a renewed understanding of and commitment to the Great Commission. We assume that we already know the nature of this commission and the appropriate methods of carrying it out. But Michael Horton contends that it too often becomes our mission instead of God's. At a time when churches are zealously engaged in writing up mission statements and strategic plans, he argues that we must ask ourselves anew whether we are ambassadors, following the script we've been given, or building our own kingdoms with our own blueprint. Pastors, church leaders, and readers of Horton's Christless Christianity and The Gospel-Driven Life will value this frank and hopeful exploration of the Great Commission as a call to understanding and good practice.
