This book was released on 1947 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate method for determining the convective cooling requirement in the laminar-boundary-layer region of a body of revolution in high-speed flight was developed and applied to an example body. The cooling requirement for the example body was determined as a function of Mach number, altitude, size, and a surface-temperature parameter. The maximum value of Mach number considered was 3.0 and the altitudes considered were those within the lower constant-temperature region of the atmosphere (40,000 to 120,000 ft). The extent of the laminar boundary layer was determined approximately at each condition as a function of the variables considered.

Book Synopsis A Method for Calculating Transient Surface Temperatures and Surface Heating Rates for High-speed Aircraft by : Robert D. Quinn
Download or read book A Method for Calculating Transient Surface Temperatures and Surface Heating Rates for High-speed Aircraft written by Robert D. Quinn and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a method that can calculate transient aerodynamic heating and transient surface temperatures at supersonic and hypersonic speeds. This method can rapidly calculate temperature and heating rate time-histories for complete flight trajectories. Semi-empirical theories are used to calculate laminar and turbulent heat transfer coefficients and a procedure for estimating boundary-layer transition is included. Results from this method are compared with flight data from the X-15 research vehicle, YF-12 airplane, and the Space Shuttle Orbiter. These comparisons show that the calculated values are in good agreement with the measured flight data.

Book Synopsis Preliminary Survey of Possible Cooling Methods for Hypersonic Aircraft by : Jack B. Esgar
Download or read book Preliminary Survey of Possible Cooling Methods for Hypersonic Aircraft written by Jack B. Esgar and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Many methods of cooling the structure of an aircraft capable of flight speeds up to 18,000 feet per second were studied. Water and hydrogen stored in the liquid state appear very promising as both coolants and heat sinks. The storage and circulation of hydrogen throughout the aircraft need not be a hazard. Cooling the outer skin of the aircraft in high-equilibrium-temperature regions could probably be avoided by using a material such as silicon carbide. The internal structure could be cooled by use of a thin layer of balsa wood saturated with water. In this way tanks for storage of coolant would be avoided.

Book Synopsis Normal Impingement of a Supersonic Jet on a Plane by : Kuei-Yuan Chien
Download or read book Normal Impingement of a Supersonic Jet on a Plane written by Kuei-Yuan Chien and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of a balanced, planar or axisymmetric, supersonic jet impinging normally on a flat surface has been considered based on an inviscid theory. The object of the study was to provide a rational model for calculating shock-interference heating as produced by a type IV shock-interaction pattern. The unwanted singularity at a low supersonic Mach number peculiar to scheme I of the one-strip formulation of the method of integral relations, as observed by South and by Gummer and Hunt, was successfully removed by the application of the scheme III of the one-strip formulation of the method of integral relations. The resulting simultaneous nonlinear algebraic equations were easily solved iteratively by the Newton-Raphson method. Sensitivity of the solution on various approximating functions employed was extensively investigated. Unlike the findings reported by Gummer and Hunt, solutions that satisfy all well-posed boundary conditions can be obtained by the one-strip formulation. Results indicate that, for the planar case, a rational engineering solution for the stagnation-point velocity gradient (and hence the peak heat-transfer rate) has been obtained. For the axisymmetric case, however, solutions appear to be not quite converging. A two-strip formulation based on the method of integral relations is also included.
Book Synopsis Hypersonic and High Temperature Gas Dynamics by : John David Anderson
Download or read book Hypersonic and High Temperature Gas Dynamics written by John David Anderson and published by AIAA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a self-contained text for those students and readers interested in learning hypersonic flow and high-temperature gas dynamics. It assumes no prior familiarity with either subject on the part of the reader. If you have never studied hypersonic and/or high-temperature gas dynamics before, and if you have never worked extensively in the area, then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you have worked and/or are working in these areas, and you want a cohesive presentation of the fundamentals, a development of important theory and techniques, a discussion of the salient results with emphasis on the physical aspects, and a presentation of modern thinking in these areas, then this book is also for you. In other words, this book is designed for two roles: 1) as an effective classroom text that can be used with ease by the instructor, and understood with ease by the student; and 2) as a viable, professional working tool for engineers, scientists, and managers who have any contact in their jobs with hypersonic and/or high-temperature flow.
