Nathaniel Thayer Delivered at His Interment, June 29, 1840 And how truly do the realities of life correspond with the representations of Scripture. We are in the midst of a vain show. We are daily and hourly reminded of our frailty. We are taught by each passing object our insecurity. Where can we go, in what can we engage, and not be the associates of the dead? What means of safety, improvement, or happiness do we possess, which do not come from them? Think a moment. The great public blessings which we enjoy, the language which we speak, the religion in which we are educated, all come from the dead. How many of the books which we read, how many of the maxims and opinions of the living, how many of the discoveries in art and science, how many of our public improvements and private conveniences, how many of the dwellings which shelter us and the temples in which we worship, are the works of the dead. How large is their sphere, how wide is their empire, compared with that of the living. Instead then of being only occasionally reminded of the dead, when their image is forced upon the attention, we have them all around us, mingling in all the scenes of mortal existence, providing for our comfort, filling for us the cup and spreading for us the table of enjoyment, and contributing to the cheerfulness of the morning and the repose of evening. Reflect still further. Frailty is written on the very constitution of our frames. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. M: Author of the Simple Cobbler of Agawam in America, With Notices of His Family Besides its wit, quaintness and sagacity, there is another characteristic Of the work so prominent, that it is not likely to be overlooked one, in fact, which has almost overshadowed its merits in modern days. The views there expressed on religious toleration, to which we refer, differ so widely from the liberal feeling on the subject now prevalent, that it is not strange they attract attention. But, however harsh these opinions may seem to us, they were not peculiar to this author; for they were shared with him by a ma jority of the people of his day, embracing the most numerous religious denominations then in existence, and much of the learning and piety of the age. There were few sects, when he received his religious educa tion, that approved of toleration and, though he, him self, had been favored beyond most ministers by foreign travel, his charity does not appear to have been enlarged by his experience abroad. He had witnessed in Hol land, and perhaps in Switzerland, a near approach to liberty of conscience as practiced at the present day; but he saw only the evils of the system, the rich train of blessings being concealed from his eye. It is true, the idea of toleration did not owe its exist ence in England to the generation for which he wrote. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Delivered at the Funeral of Rev. Thomas Savage: In Bedford, N. H., July 8, 1866 Proverbs X: VII. - "The Memory Of The Just Is Blessed." The good man is long remembered. His memory is most precious. As the light of the sun lingers on the mountain side, bathing in gold the cloud and sky long after he sinks below the horizon, making the approach of night even more beautiful than the brightness of the noon, so the memory of the just lingers long after the living form retires from the scenes of active life. Indeed, the good man's character seems to enhance in dignity when seen through the shadows of the grave. They become a prism through which the life is more perfect, - the name is as "ointment poured forth"; defects are rendered less obvious, virtues more prominent, and the whole man, clothed in the garments of christian charity, walks forth winning the confidence of men and awakening praise to Almighty God. The usefulness of the wise and good is often increased by the event of death. "Being dead they yet speak," and they speak in a louder, tenderer and more convincing voice than before. Paul did much for Christ while present with the churches - but more since he has entered the presence of the Father. The memory of his name has done more than his example - his epistles more than his preaching. The poor widow who cast two mites into the treasury of the Lord, did little for her Savior while living. But that self-sacrificing deed has been told in all ages, by all tongues, "for a memorial of her." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. D Five years ago this Chapel was dedicated to the moral and religious instruction of the poor of this city. This event makes no noise in history, and may seem to some to merit no particular notice. It is remembered, however, by not a few individuals and families, as the beginning of many good influences. Still more, it is not an event which stands alone. This chapel is the sign of an important movement, which is not soon to pass away. It sprung from the labors of that faithful servant of God, to whom we owe the establishment of the Ministry at Large in this place. It is intimately connected with, and reveals to us his life and labors; and accordingly the anniversary of its dedication to religious services, is a fit occasion for offering a tribute to his memory. Dales, D.D., Pastor of Second United Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia: Delivered January 2d, 1881 And never, in our own case, atleast, has there been a year of more marked and, in many respects, more interesting and important anniversary events than the year 1880, - a year in which the 13th of January was the fortieth anni versary of the call addressed to your pastor; the 4th of June was the fortieth anniversary of his solemn ordination to the ministry, and installation by the Presbytery in this pastoral charge; the a7th of September was the fiftieth anniversary of the adoption ofa charter for an incorpora tion of the congregation; the 4th of October was the fiftieth anniversary of the organization of the church by the reception of members and the election of Ruling Elders; and the 13th of December was the fortieth anni versary of the entering of the congregation at length into that dear old church edifice on Thirteenth street above Market, where, in the course of the fifteen years that fol lowed, it may be believed many were made, by the grace of God, to have their spiritual birth, while of it many were often led to say, in the fullness of their holy joy: This is none other but the House of God, and this is the gate of Heaven. Book excerpt: In this witty, often terrifying work of cultural criticism, the author of Amusing Ourselves to Death chronicles our transformation into a Technopoly: a society that no longer merely uses technology as a support system but instead is shaped by it—with radical consequences for the meanings of politics, art, education, intelligence, and truth.
