Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thought distortions are "techniques," that, unconscious or conscious, are used from an interest in finding ways of getting on in the world, rather than an interest in finding ways of discovering the truth. Thought distortions are the background for poor reasoning, diversionary ploys, seductive reasoning errors, techniques of persuasion and avoidance, psychological factors, which can be obstacles to clear thought. The question is: should one use thought distortions? The question raises the old discussion between Socrates and the Sophists. The Sophists were teachers of rheto-ric who taught people how to get on in the world. In this they uncritically used thought distortions. Socrates was the philosopher who taught people in ways of finding the truth. In this he critically examined, re-structured and changed thought distortions. With the claim that the Sophists today are back in that mixture of postmodernistic intellectualism, management theory, self-help and New Age, which Morten Tolboll calls The Matrix Conspiracy, he will, with this book, present a manual in the So-cratic way of life. The book is a follow-up to the three books on Morten Tolbolls teaching Medita-tion as an Art of Life (Meditation as an Art of Life - 2008, Dream Yoga - 2009, A Portrait of a Lifeartist - 2010). It is also a reference book to his two books on the Matrix Conspiracy (The Matrix Conspiracy - part 1 and 2).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, theoreticians, practitioners, and other allied professionals who together represent the entire arc of the mental health field must be versed in psychopathology, the study of mental and emotional phenomena, abnormal psychology, and specific symptoms and behaviors. Building a reference that speaks to all of these professions and subjects, Henry Kellerman assembles the first dictionary to focus exclusively on psychopathology, featuring more than two thousand entries (over fifteen hundred primary and more than five hundred subentries) on specific symptoms and disorders, general syndromes, facets of personality structure, and diagnosis. He also includes a sampling of benchmark contributions by theoreticians and researchers that cover the history of psychopathology. These contributions reflect those of a psychodynamic nature as well as cognitive and behavioral approaches, and represent the relatively new field of neuropsychoanalysis as well. This branch of neuroscience is concerned with the relation between the brain and the mind, specifically with reference to brain architecture and function. Monitored by a distinguished editorial board, the Dictionary of Psychopathology mostly adheres to the latest DSM nomenclature while also retaining useful residual diagnoses of previous DSM formulations, as well as diagnostic formulations outside of traditional nosologies. The aim of the Dictionary is to broadly contribute to the synthesis of psychopathology.

Book excerpt: "One of the most important books you are ever going to read."--from the foreword by CHRISTINE CAINE The Light of Hope Is Closer Than You Know When our once-solid worlds suddenly shift and heave, we find ourselves desperately trying to hold it all together. We suffer silently, ashamed of our struggles with things like anxiety, depression, and sleeplessness--after all, everyone else seems to be fine. Yet the truth is that everyone tastes from the cup of suffering. With unassuming honesty and candor, Dr. Mark Chironna openly shares what he learned in his own three-year battle with darkness. Integrating the best of theology with Christ-centered psychology, he offers scriptural and holistic truths that will help lead you out of the murky depths. Though it feels as if this dark night will never end, you can walk through your uncertainty, fears, and tears to find the edge of hope again. "The scariest place can also be your threshold. Step through it knowing God is there with you, and your healing can happen right in the middle of your chaos."--Mark Chironna "Sweeping wisdom and weeping compassion . . . a manifesto of hope that conveys both modesty of spirit and majesty of thought." --LEONARD SWEET, founder, PreachTheStory.com; author, Songs of Light series "I highly recommend this book to anyone who is going through a storm or knows someone who is!"--KRIS VALLOTTON, senior associate leader, Bethel Church, Redding, California

Dictionary of Psychology is an A-Z guide to key terms in the subject. Each entry begins with a clear, one-sentence definition and is followed by explanation and examples. Entries are developed in line with the relative importance of the topic covered. For many of the more central topic areas, further commentary is included to assist the reader in acquiring a critical understanding of the topic in question. Entries are carefully cross-referenced, and the format makes the Dictionary of Psychology very easy to use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first historical dictionary of psychiatry. It covers the subject from autism to Vienna, and includes the key concepts, individuals, places, and institutions that have shaped the evolution of psychiatry and the neurosciences. An introduction puts broad trends and international differences in context, and there is an extensive bibliography for further reading. Each entry gives the main dates, themes, and personalities involved in the unfolding of the topic. Longer entries describe the evolution of such subjects as depression, schizophrenia, and psychotherapy. The book gives ready reference to when things happened in psychiatry, how and where they happened, and who made the main contributions. In addition, it touches on such social themes as "women in psychiatry," "criminality and psychiatry," and "homosexuality and psychiatry." A comprehensive index makes immediately accessible subjects that do not appear in the alphabetical listing. Among those who will appreciate this dictionary are clinicians curious about the origins of concepts they use in their daily practices, such as "paranoia," "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors" (SSRIs), or "tardive dyskinesia"; basic scientists who want ready reference to the development of such concepts as "neurotransmitters," "synapse," or "neuroimaging"; students of medical history keen to situate the psychiatric narrative within larger events, and the general public curious about illnesses that might affect them, their families and their communities-or readers who merely want to know about the grand chain of events from the asylum to Freud to Prozac. Bringing together information from the English, French, German, Italian, and Scandinavian languages, the Dictionary rests on an enormous base of primary sources that cover the growth of psychiatry through all of Western society.

With contributions from over 350 experts in the field, it highlights the diverse schools of psychotherapy, tracing their histories and traditions, while underlining their specific strengths in dealing with human behaviours, feelings and perceptions in the contemporary world. The book traces eight principal paradigms: psychodynamic, behavioural, existential-humanistic, body-expression, systemic-relational, cognitive, interactional-strategic and eclectic. It presents to the expert and non-expert reader an array of models that grew from a specific paradigm, sharing the same fundamental epistemology and therapeutic strategies. This is accomplished through a reader-friendly approach that presents clear definitions of the key constructs of each paradigm, and transversal concepts that are common to the diverse practices of psychotherapy. The International Dictionary of Psychotherapy provides a clear picture of the numerous types of psychotherapeutic treatments and their applications, while offering a close examination of the efficacy and evaluative methods developed as a result of numerous debates and research carried out within the psychotherapeutic community. It represents an essential resource for psychotherapeutic and psychoanalytic practitioners and students, regardless of background or creed.
