Book Synopsis Biological Monitoring of Marine Pollutants by : F. John Vernberg
Download or read book Biological Monitoring of Marine Pollutants written by F. John Vernberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Monitoring of Marine Pollutants presents the proceedings of a symposium on ""Pollution and Physiology of Marine Organisms"" held in Milford, Connecticut, on November 7-9, 1980. It looks at the physiological effects of pollutants, such as synthetic organic compounds, petroleum hydrocarbons, and heavy metals, on marine organisms ranging from fishes and shrimps to barnacles, crabs, mussels, polychaetes, and microalgae. Comprised of four sections encompassing 22 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the effects of synthetic organics, such as pesticides on marine organisms like the mysid shrimps Mysidopsis bahia. It proceeds with a discussion of the toxic effects of several chlorophenols on the grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio; how heavy metals, including silver, copper, cadmium, zinc, and mercury, affect species such as the polychaete Neanthes virens and the caridean shrimp Palaemonetes pugio; monitoring of water quality based on the biochemical and physiological responses of marine organisms to pollutants; and the effects of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on fishes from an ecological standpoint. Marine scientists, ecologists, and students will find this book extremely useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These papers of the Third National Trout Hepatoma Research Conference held in Portland, Oregon, March 18 and 19, 1965, are arranged in order of presentation and are reproduced in the form received. The results, discussions and opinions expressed are those of the individual or group represented and do no necessarily reflect the views of either the National Cancer Institute or the Department of the Interior. The purpose of this conference was to review the status of research on rainbow trout hepatoma, to arrange research discussions between the major active research groups in this field, and to project probable productive research programs for future efforts.
Book Synopsis Effects of Post-impoundment Shore Modifications on Fish Populations in Missouri River Reservoirs by : Norman Gustaf Benson
Download or read book Effects of Post-impoundment Shore Modifications on Fish Populations in Missouri River Reservoirs written by Norman Gustaf Benson and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Missouri River main stem reservoirs in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota, hydrodynamic processes have decreased the lengths of shorelines and changed their configurations during the first 20 to 25 years of impoundment. Physical changes to the shore probably influenced fish abundance and species composition by changing the quality and quantityt of spawning and nursery habitat.
Book Synopsis Ecology of Daphnia in Bull Shoals Reservoir by : Richard L. Applegate
Download or read book Ecology of Daphnia in Bull Shoals Reservoir written by Richard L. Applegate and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life histories of Daphnia galeata mendotae, D. retrocurva, D. parvula, D. ambigua, and D. schoedleri are compared with year class strength and food of threadfin shad in Bull Shoals Reservoir from 1965 to 1967. Maximum population density of daphnids was in April, May, and June. Populations declined to insignificant densities throughout the rest of the year. Declines coincided with the inclusion of Daphnia in the diets of threadfin shad smaller than 14 mm. Declines in the summer of 1967 coincided with both young shad predation and high Leptodora kindtii density. Population changes associated with declining year class strength of threadfin shad were an increase of the large D. schoedleri and Leptodora kindtii from nondetectable or trace densities to relatively large populations, and increase from nondetectable densities of daphnids in the summer to detectable densities, and a twofold to threefold increase in the summer standing crops of Bosmina longirostris.

Book Synopsis Food Habits of Striped Marlin and Sailfish Off Mexico and Southern California by : Douglas H. Evans
Download or read book Food Habits of Striped Marlin and Sailfish Off Mexico and Southern California written by Douglas H. Evans and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stomach contents of 924 striped marlin landed in the sport catches at Mazatlan, Sinaloa, and Buena Vista, Baja California, Sur, Mexico, and San Diego, California, and of 197 sailfish from Mazatlan and Buena Vista were examined. The striped marlin and sailfish fed primarily on pelagic fishes and cephalopods. By volume the major foods were squid (principally Dosidicus gigas) for striped marlin at Mazatlan and for striped marlin and sailfish at Buena Vista, northern anchovy for striped marlin at San Diego, and threadfin for sailfish at Mazatlan. Locally differences in food habits were pronounced, and some seasonal and yearly differences were found.
Book Synopsis Review of Fishery Studies on Missouri River Main Stem Reservoirs by : Norman Gustaf Benson
Download or read book Review of Fishery Studies on Missouri River Main Stem Reservoirs written by Norman Gustaf Benson and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The six main stem Missouri River reservoirs are described, and information available through 1964 on plankton, water chemistry, fish populations, and water management is discussed. At maximum pool, these reservoirs have a capacity of 76 million acre-feet and a surface area of 1.2 million acres. Each of the upper reservoirs is larger in capacity and area than the sum of the lower three reservoirs. Fishes common in this system are bigmouth buffalo, carp, river carpsucker, yellow perch, goldeye, northern pike, sauger, walleye, white crappie, black crappie, and freshwater drum. Available information on growth rates, year-class strength, and relative abundance of common species is described. Limiting factors of the environments are the turbidities, wind, and fine soils. Research needs and problems relative to fish production are discussed.

Book Synopsis Bibliography on the Blood Chemistry of Fishes by : Joseph B. Hunn
Download or read book Bibliography on the Blood Chemistry of Fishes written by Joseph B. Hunn and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature search, starting from scratch, is expensive in terms of time spend in comparison with information gathered. This bibliography includes earlier references by Hunn (1959, 1960) that provide some information to anyone seeking a range of "normal" blood values for fish blood chemistry as well as additional literature that attempts to evaluate the physiological responses of fish to changes in their environment.
