Book excerpt: An exhaustive, yet fascinating, account of the history of Odisha (earlier Orissa) from the prehistoric times to 1568 CE by synthesising authentic evidence from the original sources such as literary, epigraphic, numismatics, archaeological, historical, and travellers’ accounts in chronological order… First published in 1981, the book has undergone several editions and is widely acclaimed and ranks among the most authentic historical books on the history and culture of Odisha. The book is divided into 19 chapters. The first—Introductory Chapter—explores the prehistoric period against the backdrop of the topographic setting of the region. Chapters 2 to 12 deal with the dynastic history of Odisha, while the remaining chapters, i.e., from 13 to 19 throw light on the vibrant cultural diversities of Odisha, especially the administrative organisations, socio-economic conditions, religious traditions, art and architecture, and colonial expansion. In addition, there are six elaborate appendices, where the author examines, dissects, and elucidates on various intriguing issues and old theories: situating the date of Kharavela; the accounts of Arab travellers; the historicity of the Madala Panji; and the research credibility of “Odia Mahabharat” by Sarala Dasa. Each chapter contains references and a bibliography of selected works by other scholars who have worked in the field. The book provides a comprehensive index, and illustrations in the book outline the rich archaeological monuments and heritage of Odisha. This scholarly work connects the land, culture, and history of Odisha through the times past up until 1568 CE. It will definitely serve to a great extent the needs of students of history and be a pleasurable reading to all those who love Indian art and culture and especially of Odisha. Book excerpt: In The Indian System of Human Marks, Zysk offers a literary history of the Indian system of knowledge, which details divination by means of the marks on the bodies of both men and women. In addition to a historical analysis, the work includes texts and translations of the earliest treatises in Sanskrit. This is followed by a detailed philological analysis of the texts and annotations to the translations. The history follows the Indian system’s evolution from its roots in ancient Mesopotamian collections of omen on the human body to modern-day practice in Rajasthan in the north and Tamilnadu in the south. A special feature of the book is Zysk’s edition and translation of the earliest textual collection of the system in the Gargīyajyotiṣa from the 1st century CE. The system of human marks is one of the few Indian textual sources that links ancient India with the antique cultures of Mesopotamia and Greece.

Book excerpt: Little has so far been written on the "Prataparudradeva, the last great suryavamsi king of Orissa". For the first time in this work attempt has been made to throw new light on this field and thereby filling up a very major gap in the study of Orissan History. Salient Features (i) This illuminating volume leads to fascinating revelations about the life and activities of the great king Prataparudradeva. (ii) It constitutes a unique asset in understanding how Prataparudradeva who more or less through out his life had a fight and fight against adversaries from the North from the South and from the West with both Hindu and Muslim powers and proved himself as a great emperor of Orissa. Not only did he show his persistence to fight out the enemy but also in diplomatic skill he was found well conversant. (iii) In the field of religion his contribution was on less. He was a respector of all the religions and was tolerant to all religious sect. The most remarkable event in the field of religion during his rule was steady growth of Oriya Vaishnavism as well as Goudiya Vaishnavism under his patronage. (iv) Economic life of Orissa received new turn during his rule. He allowed the Portuguese trades to establish a settlement at Pipli in Balasore District (Orissa). The industries of Orissa got a boost because of the Portuguese demand. (v) He himself was a poet and great patronised of literature. His court was adorned with galaxy of very important poets. In his region the contributions of Panchasakha to the Oriya Literature paved the way for further prosperity in later period. The Panchasakha’s also initiated a reformist movement which sought to remove social barriers and minimized the existing social problem of inequality between man and man. (vi) He was strong and efficient administrator. The key note of his administrative system was to bring peace and prosperity of the people. (vii) If people suffered from the baneful effect of natural calamities life famine and draught he war alert to do his best for welfare of the suffering mass. Hope this book from a variety of stand points will be popular for the scholars, students and the public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanātana Gosvāmin’s Haribhaktivilāsa (ca. 1540) describes the normative ritual life of a Vaiṣṇava devotee. As it is one of the first Sanskrit texts of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition begun by Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya (1486–1533) it presents a fascinating meeting between this ecstatic new religious movement and older, Brahminical tradition. On the basis of eleven manuscripts, this important text has now been for the first time been critically edited. In his extensive introduction, Måns Broo engages with many of the questions that have vexed earlier scholars of this text (such as who really was the author?) by exploring its extensive intertextualities.

Book excerpt: Buddhist Acharya Padmasambhava of the Vajrayana school of Mahayana sect, being invited by the king of Tibet, went there during the first half of the eighth century AD. He firmly established this esoteric form of Buddhism there and other Himalayan lands, which is known as “Lamaism”. He is deified and celebrated in Lamaism as Buddha himself, even more than that. As a direct result of Padmasambhava’s efforts, the people of Tibet were elevated to a state of unsurmountable spiritual culture. He is, therefore, truly one of the greatest of the world’s culture heroes. He is most revered and is honoured as the Second Buddha. He belongs to India and hails from Uddiyana. Therefore, he is popularly known as Uddiyana Guru. But, a holy personality known all over the world, a Great Guru, is almost a forgotten name in India, least remembered, not in history, not in literature, not anywhere even among the Buddhist circles in India. Padmasambhava originally belongs to Uddiyana, the location of this place has been disputed by some scholars to be in Swat Valley within the ancient Gandhara region, which is not tenable. The present work is an attempt to study all aspects pertaining to this Guru, starting from his magical appearance and penances to his mystical life, his works and achievements all through the Himalayan region along with Tibet. That leads to establish strongly that the home of the Uddiyana Guru is nowhere else but in Odisha. Focus has been laid to establish facts and all evidences showing that Uddiyana is but Odisha. This may be considered as the exclusive and exhaustive compilation, published for the first time in India.

Book excerpt: Love in the Time of Scholarship concerns the history of scholarly life in precolonial India, revealing the ways that popular religious movements from the wider world infiltrated and shaped scholarship produced in elite traditions of learning. Author Anand Venkatkrishnan shows how specific religious traditions, in their very local, regional incarnations, influenced scholarly work in unexpected ways.
