Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Descriptive Bibliography: Of the Most Important Books in the English Language, Relating to the Art History of Engraving and the Collecting of Prints Many books have been written about Print Collecting and the Art and History of Engraving. Some of them are very exhaustive, some are models of learning and accuracy, and all are an endless source of pleasure and profitable information to the collector of prints and the student of the literature relating thereto. One desiring technical information can find important works dealing fully with all branches of the art of engraving, and the general collector, or the collector of prints by or after particular artists, can find accurate and comprehensive lists and catalogues minutely describing the various prints and their states. There are dictionaries of artists, of monograms, watermarks, and marks of print-collectors, histories, biographies, and bibliographies - general and special - and in many languages. The number of English books on the subject is large, but one must consult those in other languages for information relative to some branches. For marks and monograms of engravers one turns to Nagler (German), for watermarks to Briquet (French), as there are no English books dealing in a comprehensive way with these subjects. On the other hand some English books have not their equal abroad; for instance, Fagan's "Collectors' Marks" is the only one on the subject, and Hind's "Short History of Engraving and Etching," and Mrs. Frankau's "Eighteenth Century Colour Prints," are better than many excellent similar books published abroad. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sung closely examines William Blake’s extant engraved copper plates and arrives at a new interpretation of his working process. Sung suggests that Blake revised and corrected his work more than was previously thought. This belies the Romantic ideal that the acts of conception and execution are simultaneous in the creative process.

Book excerpt: Hwo did the rise of metropolitan art institutions influence modernism and the modernisation of art in England? This volume explores the artist as creator, notions of class and taste, and the power of institutions to affect creativity and artistic expression. Topics discussed include the radicalism of engravers and how their claim to be artists is an important and negkected aspect of the nineteenth-century art world; and how the aesthetic dispute over the Chantrey Bequest epitomized conflicts of taste, cultural independence, and interdependence between opposed art institutions and the Treasury.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Find Out About the Arts: A Guide to Sources of Information discusses the main sources of information, printed or otherwise, in the field of the arts. The book begins by describing where information on art careers can be found. Separate chapters then discuss how information on art can be traced in libraries by means of the catalogue and classification scheme; and turning to bibliographies when information on a particular aspect of art cannot be traced by these means. Subsequent chapters deal with sources such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, general indexes to reproductions and portraits, works on iconography, periodicals, directories, yearbooks, and sales records. This book aims to serve some of the needs of the student of art, the experienced artist, and indeed all of those with an intelligent interest in the arts. In particular, it should help those in libraries, colleges, and other educational institutions whose task it is to guide others to the right sources.

This book looks into the freedom and directness of the etching process became a key plank in a sustained attempt to raise the status of etching in Britain spearheaded by artists such as Francis Seymour Haden and James McNeill Whistler and members of the Etching Club. An Indolent and Blundering Art? Opens with a description of the use of language and art criticism to redefine etching
