Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Orkney Islands In submitting this second Edition of Dr. Barry's History of the Orkney Islands to the public inspection, the Editor is aware, that, if he could offer an account of a Terra australis incognita, curiosity would be excited, and the book would be perused with avidity. He is aware that a cluster of Islands, which, with a fair wind, are only three or four days' fail from the capital of the Empire, cannot excite that interest from their novelty, which we would take in the description of places inhabited by savages; where volcanos vomited forth subterranean fires; where the traveller, at every step, encountered strange minerals, plants, and animals; and which could not be reached without the circumnavigation of the globe. In such cases, the difficulties surmounted, and the dangers incurred while obtaining information, render the adventures of the historian more interesting, than either the utility or importance of the information he conveys. Although our author has kept out of view his own adventures, while employed in collecting the information he exhibits, we are not to suppose, that such a work could be drawn up in the closet, amidst the calm of learned retirement. Our Author must often have crossed the rapid sounds which intersect these Islands, where the tides run like torrents descending from the sides of mountains; and, when they encounter a strong wind, raise commotions which would appeal any person but the native islanders. Often must he have grappled with the mountain billows of the Atlantic, and of the Northern Ocean, and, when he reached land, submitted to accommodations or rather privations, which would scare the inhabitants of districts more populous and better cultivated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vertebrate Fauna of the Orkney Islands The plan of the present volume is built much on the same lines as those of the two preceding ones, though we have made one or two alterations which appeared to us, if not necessary, at least an improvement on these. Thus, instead of giving a list 'of all the species included in the British Fauna, we have only given those about which we had any information, by these means doing away with a good deal of unnecessary matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient History of Orkney, Caithness, and the North To entertain the curious is the design of this translation; for such persons will approve of any endeavour to illustrate the history of Scotland, or of any particular shire or county in it. And as this author gives the most ancient seeamt of the Islands of Orkney and Zetland, of the Western Isles, of Caithness, Sutherland, and counties round the Murray Frith, and mentions many things that may ii lustrate the history of Scotland, I thought proper to trans late it, as it may engage others that are more capable. And have access to libraries, to put these hints in a better dress, and add to the work what is wanting to illustrate the his tory of the times. I have omitted many passages contained in this author, but these were either genealogies of Norwegian families, or long chronological disputes, or else tedious paragraphs from the history of other nations, which had little or no connection with the history of these counties I have men tioned. As to what concerns any part of Scotland I have not omitted the least hint, so that a connection is more visible in the whole by omitting these things. Book excerpt: Written around AD 1200 by an unnamed Icelandic author, the Orkneyinga Saga is an intriguing fusion of myth, legend and history. The only medieval chronicle to have Orkney as the central place of action, it tells of an era when the islands were still part of the Viking world, beginning with their conquest by the kings of Norway in the ninth century. The saga describes the subsequent history of the Earldom of Orkney and the adventures of great Norsemen such as Sigurd the Powerful, St Magnus the Martyr and Hrolf, the conqueror of Normandy. Savagely powerful and poetic, this is a fascinating depiction of an age of brutal battles, murder, sorcery and bitter family feuds. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Spent their yearly vacations in examining into the much vexed (till settled by them) question as to the glaciation of Shetland. The Orkneys, and the North of Scotland. They kindly promised, if ever I went to press, to aid me by writing the chapters on the geology of these northern isles. A promise which they have most admirably kept, as the reader himself can see. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Orkney and Zetland, Vol. 1: Illustrative of the History, Antiquities, Scenery, and Customs of Those Islands It may be proper to state, that the writer of these Notes has been res1dent in Orkney for a period of above seven years, and that, during the greater part of that time, he has devoted a considerable portion of his leisure to the investigation of every thing in that district by which its past or present condition are characterised. This has been done partly for his own gratification, and partly in the discharge of public duties. In those inquiries, he found Wallace' s and Barry's Accounts of Orkney (both of these being also now scarce) unsatisfactory in many important particulars, especially with rc ference to the period that the islands have been ah nexed to Scotland. And he has attempted to supply various defects, as well as to correct imper feet views, by having recourse to original records and papers, which were either inaccessible to those writers, or were passed over by them without due attention being bestowed upon the tenor of the original documents. To the legendary era of the Northern Islands, while they were subject to the Scandinavian power, he has paid little attention.
