Book excerpt: The success of any military organization in accomplishing its mission depends largely on the quality of the personnel who constitute the organization. The National Longitudinal Survey (NLS) and the Profile of American Youth (1980 Nationwide Administration of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) offer a wealth of information on the behavior and characteristics of a nationally representative sample of young men and women. This thesis has developed a data base extract designed primarily for analysts seeking to obtain insights on the current and projected 'quality' of military personnel. Instructions for using the data base extract are provided, along with a brief description of the survey and the computer program (SPSS) and a selected group of frequency distributions from the extract.
Book Synopsis Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth by : National Research Council
Download or read book Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recruiting an all-volunteer military is a formidable task. To successfully enlist one eligible recruit, the Army must contact approximately 120 young people. The National Research Council explores the various factors that will determine whether the military can realistically expect to recruit an adequate fighting force-one that will meet its upcoming needs. It also assesses the military's expected manpower needs and projects the numbers of youth who are likely to be available over the next 20 years to meet these needs. With clearly written text and useful graphics, Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth offers an overview of important issues for military recruiters, touching on a number of important topics including: sex and race, education and aptitude, physical and moral attributes, and military life and working conditions. In addition, the book looks at how a potential recruit would approach the decision to enlist, considering personal, family, and social values, and the options for other employment or college. Building on the need to increase young Americans' "propensity to enlist," this book offers useful recommendations for increasing educational opportunities while in the service and for developing advertising strategies that include concepts of patriotism and duty to country. Of primary value to military policymakers, recruitment officers, and analysts, Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth will also interest social scientists and policy makers interested in youth trends.

Book Synopsis Advantage and Disadvantage by : R. Darrell Bock
Download or read book Advantage and Disadvantage written by R. Darrell Bock and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon a large body of factual information,a critical view of the cognitive skills and potentials of young people in the United States in the 1980s. The data is analyzed using the most current statistical techniques and discussed from a broad psychological, sociological and educational perspective. The respondents to the survey were obtained by direct visits to households, not through convenient institutional sources, therefore allowing for a representative national sample. As such, the study typifies a complete cross-section of America's youth both in and out of school. The young people included in the sample were administered the ASVAB, a test battery which consists of ten separately timed and scored tests which assess a wide range of knowledge and skills from English-language reading and vocabulary, through secondary school mathematics understanding and quantitative competance, to quite specific vocational knowledge in technical fields. Differences in the profiles across the ten tests provide some of the more interesting results of the analysis.

Download or read book Youth, Work, and Military Service: Findings from Two Decades of Monitoring the Future National Samples of American Youth written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the work-related attitudes and experiences of high school seniors and young adults, using questionnaire data from the Monitoring the Future project covering nearly a quarter century. This summary provides brief highlights of the report. This report considers four interrelated research questions, which may be of general interest to those concerned with youth and vocational development, and which should be of particular interest to those concerned with military personnel and recruitment: 1. How can we characterize the work-related attitudes and values of high school seniors in recent years those who were students in the nineties? 2. Have these attitudes and values changed importantly during the past quarter-century (specifically, since 1976)? 3. Do high school seniors expecting to enter military service show marked differences from their classmates, on average, along any of these attitude and value dimensions? And have any such differences changed appreciably (since 1976)? 4. Do high school graduates who actually enter military service differ from their classmates who enter college, or from their classmates who enter civilian employment, along any of these attitude and value dimensions? If so, to what extent are such differences evident during the senior year of high school (indicating self-selection), and to what extent do they emerge after entry into the different post-high school environments (indicating socialization)?

Download or read book I Want You! written by Bernard D. Rostker and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2006-09-08 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As U.S. military forces appear overcommitted and some ponder a possible return to the draft, the timing is ideal for a review of how the American military transformed itself over the past five decades, from a poorly disciplined force of conscripts and draft-motivated "volunteers" to a force of professionals revered throughout the world. Starting in the early 1960s, this account runs through the current war in Iraq, with alternating chapters on the history of the all-volunteer force and the analytic background that supported decisionmaking. The author participated as an analyst and government policymaker in many of the events covered in this book. His insider status and access offer a behind-the-scenes look at decisionmaking within the Pentagon and White House. The book includes a foreword by former Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird. The accompanying DVD contains more than 1,700 primary-source documents-government memoranda, Presidential memos and letters, staff papers, and reports-linked directly from citations in the electronic version of the book. This unique technology presents a treasure trove of materials for specialists, researchers, and students of military history, public administration, and government affairs to draw upon.
