There is a Bath at Milk River, in the parish of Vere, sup plied by warm mineral springs, which has been found in the worst of all cases an unfailingspecific for the cure of the painful malad in the course of a few days. Here are large and commodious ublic huildings Over the springs, maintained at the public expense an any one is admitted, on production of a ticket from a member of either branch of the Legisla ture. Which is never repaid in proper cases. The springs are situated a few yards from the Mllk River, which may be seen in the small map lately published in America, and are about forty miles from Kingston. There is also a similar spring of hot water at Bath, in St. Thomas in the East, where an Establishment, though on a smaller scale, is kept. The contributors reconsider the various roles regions—imagined politically, economically, racially, and figuratively—played in the formation of American communities, both real and imagined. These texts vary widely: some are canonical, others archival; some literary, others scientific; some polemical, others simply documentary. As a whole, they recreate important mental mappings and cartographies, and they reveal how diverse populations imagined themselves, their communities, and their nation as occupying the American landscape. Focusing on place-specific, local writing published before 1860, Mapping Region in Early American Writing examines a period often overlooked in studies of regional literature in America.
