However, while facile generalizations about the lack of demographic change and lack of progress in meeting the MDGs in sub-Saharan Africa are commonplace, they are often misleading and belie the socio-cultural change that is occurring among a vanguard of more educated youth. Even within Ethiopia, the second largest country at the Crossroads of Africa and the Middle East, different narratives emerge from analysis of longitudinal, micro-level analysis as to how demographic change and responses are occurring, some more rapidly than others. The book compares Ethiopia with other Africa countries, and demonstrates the uniqueness of an African-type demographic transition: a combination of poverty-related negative factors (unemployment, disease, food insecurity) along with positive education, health and higher age-of-marriage trends that are pushing this ruggedly rural and land-locked population to accelerate the demographic transition and stay on track to meet most of the MDGs. The study seeks to analyze future regional trends based on political, social, economic, and historical tendencies as well as international influences. The area of study includes eight African nations: Burundi, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. A coherent definition of the region, supported by geographic, cultural, and religious data, paves the way for a historical analysis of past trends which will impact the future of East Africa. An in-depth examination of current social tendencies such as demographics, health, and education systems provides a grass-roots basis for further study of the political and economic systems in place. An analysis of the East-African political arena necessitates a study of the impact of pluralism, as well as a close look into current political structures by means of a case study of the Moi government in Kenya. The economic state of affairs in the region is largely related to efficient usage of natural resources and to political management of the economy; as such these topics are covered. Structural adjustment, international aid, and regionalization are proposed as three solutions to the widespread economic hardship in the region before the study moves on to an analysis of the influence of private enterprise and politico-humanitarian non-governmental organizations. International actors such as Great Britain, France, and the United States are also considered. Based on current demographic and health trends, this study predicts continued social and economic difficulty until at least 2050. A reorganization of current leadership and distributive structures will be necessary in order to ensure full participation by the largely isolated rural populations in all aspects of East-African life.
