Its purpose is to provide a quick lookup for point types; the user then utilizes the basic references that are provided for more research information, point comparisons, data, distributions, similar types, timemarkers, etc. There are nearly two thousand types in this publication. Within American archaeology, there are many forms of investigations, practices, methodologies, ethical standards, varying degrees of expertise, site-context artifacts, field-collected collections, and numerous other factors that apply to projectile point typology and American collections. And then there is the relic/collector world that probably holds more artifacts than any other group in the US. Somewhere in the midst of all this, there is reliable and truthful information about Americas antiquity. For some, archaeology is a compromise among people who study and curate (loosely used for private collection) prehistoric artifacts. Any attempt to produce a single publication on American projectile points will certainly place the writer between scientific archaeology and the proverbial other side of the arrowheadsthe collector world. Justifiably, there are readers who simply want to learn more about the Native Americans material culture and will contribute their artifact finds to the archaeological communitys public record.

Book excerpt: The chronology and morphology of Pinto series projectile points in the Great Basin and the Mojave Desert have been the subject of much debate. Split-stemmed points have been found in both early and late contexts associated with dates spanning the late Paleoindian and Archaic Periods. This lack of temporal specificity may relate to differences in regional morphology through time coupled with misidentification of other point types as Pinto series. These issues are discussed using a collection of 170 Pinto series points from the distal portion of the Old River Bed delta of northwestern Utah. The research presented here examines the distributional, chronological, and quantitative differences between the Pinto series and other split-stemmed projectile points of the Great Basin. The results indicate the comparatively robust Pinto form is primarily found on the southern and eastern fringes of the Great Basin in earlier contexts than that of the more northerly and gracile Gatecliff Split stem point.

Book excerpt: Noel Justice adds another regional guide to his series of important reference works that survey, describe, and categorize the projectile point and cutting tools used in prehistory by Native American peoples. This volume addresses the region of California and the Great Basin. Written for archaeologists and amateur collectors alike, the book describes over 50 types of stone arrowhead and spear points according to period, culture, and region. With the knowledge of someone trained to fashion projectile points with techniques used by the Indians, Justice describes how the points were made, used, and re-sharpened. His detailed drawings illustrate the way the Indians shaped their tools, what styles were peculiar to which regions, and how the various types can best be identified. There are hundreds of drawings, organized by type cluster and other identifying characteristics. The book also includes distribution maps and color plates that will further aid the researcher or collector in identifying specific periods, cultures, and projectile types.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gifts from the Thunder Beings examines North American Aboriginal peoples’ use of Indigenous and European distance weapons in big-game hunting and combat. Beyond the capabilities of European weapons, Aboriginal peoples’ ways of adapting and using this technology in combination with Indigenous weaponry contributed greatly to the impact these weapons had on Aboriginal cultures. This gradual transition took place from the beginning of the fur trade in the Hudson’s Bay Company trading territory to the treaty and reserve period that began in Canada in the 1870s. Technological change and the effects of European contact were not uniform throughout North America, as Roland Bohr illustrates by comparing the northern Great Plains and the Central Subarctic—two adjacent but environmentally different regions of North America—and their respective Indigenous cultures. Beginning with a brief survey of the subarctic and Northern Plains environments and the most common subsistence strategies in these regions around the time of contact, Bohr provides the context for a detailed examination of social, spiritual, and cultural aspects of bows, arrows, quivers, and firearms. His detailed analysis of the shifting usage of bows and arrows and firearms in the northern Great Plains and the Central Subarctic makes Gifts from the Thunder Beings an important addition to the canon of North American ethnology.
