Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Survey of Educational Progress During the Decade 1900 to 1910 The purpose of this survey is to set forth some of the more salient features of educational development in the United States during the first decade of the new century. No one who has watched this growth will believe that it is possible to express it in any sort of completeness by statistical methods alone; but some of the more general and objective features can be handled in this manner, and by means of comparisons; general movements forward or backward may be seen. School statistics generally avail able, however, are faulty, and no amount-of effort can correct them so long as the various States ask for returns on different and varying bases. Hence all general conclusions reached as a result of the study of the educational statistics of the country must be taken with due allo'wance unless supported by evidence from other sources. It may not be out of place at this point to say that this office is working with all diligence to get correct and comparable returns from all States and that a plan presented looking toward this end has been indorsed by the 'department of Superintendence of the National Educational Association at the Mobile meeting in 1911. Within the coming decade it is expected that more reliable returns will'be available and that they will be ready for publication in the year to which they relate. At any rate, this bureau is determined to make the attempt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of North Carolina Record, Vol. 105: January, 1913 The better professional training of the teacher is the great est problem which American education has to face today. Not only the embryo' teacher, but the teacher in active service, must get and keep in touch with the best that is being done and said in the field of education if our educational system is not finally to break down of its own weight. For the teacher Who-cannot afford the time to study at some institution, there is still open the recourse of the reading of professional books. But treatises on education are produced today in such numbers that it is often very difficult to win now the wheat from the chaff, and pick those books which will be of some definite service. Mere titles sometimes tell little, advertisements often bewilder more than they aid. From time to time, there have come to the Department of Education requests for lists of books on special topics or in the general field of educational theory. This bulletin is an attempt to give a descriptive list of books of value to two classes of teachers; to superintendents of school systems and to high school teachers and principals. It is hoped later to issue bulletins having a more definite reference to other class es of teachers, but limitations of space have made necessary this restriction in the present publication. Books dealing only with elementary school problems, with those of the rural school, the farm-life school, etc., have been with one or two exceptions, omitted, since it seemed best to focus on high school problems and those of general reference, rather than to attempt to scatter ove-r the whole field in such limited space. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher Training in North Carolina In 1900 there were white public school teachers and'2,567 negro public school teachers making a grand total Of teachers. A quarter of a century later there were white' and 5, 309 negro teachers or a total Of 22, 257 public school teachers. During this twenty-five year period, the number of teachers increased steadily and by 1925 the number employed was practically two and one -fifth times as great as the number employed during the year ending 1900. The per cent Of increase during the period 1900-1925 for urban teachers, both white and colored, was greater than the per cent Of increase for the number of rural teachers and the rate Of increase for whites was greater than the rate Of increase for negroes. The greatest factor in determining this rapid increase in number Of public school teachers has been the increase in school. Attendance. In 1901 there were white and negro children in average daily attend ance. For the school year ending 1925, there were white children and negro children or a grand total Of children in average daily attendance in the public schools. There were, therefore, two and two fifths times as many white children in average daily attendance during 1925 as there were in 1901. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Education in the South This book is the outgrowth of several years' study of public educational problems in the United States, especially in the South, through courses in the history of education given at Trinity College and the University of North Carolina for teachers and prospective teachers and administrators. In such courses the aim has been to consider the principal problems of administration, support, and supervision of present-day education in the Southern States and to seek an understanding of their meaning in the light of their historical growth. The book is therefore a study of actual educational progress in the South rather than of educational theories and the relation between education and economic, social, political, and religious influences is given emphasis.
