Book Synopsis The Proud Decades by : John P. Diggins
Download or read book The Proud Decades written by John P. Diggins and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1988 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when public figures' private selves are put forth for examination by public audiences? How do the personal struggles of music artists, specifically those with immigrant backgrounds, compare to the private struggles of other individuals? At a time when many countries in the European Union experience an increase in far-right political party activities, how do individuals from the margins negotiate new ways of thinking about identity, offering hope for greater understanding of shared struggles across societies? This book offers interpretations of identity and belonging by examining the work of two music artists, Faudel Belloua from France and Adam Tensta from Sweden. By analyzing texts produced by these individuals, I argue that ongoing engagement with the materials produced by Belloua and Tensta, a process which I refer to as living biography, presents a unique window into the process of how Belloua and Tensta connect personal struggles to public issues, providing a compelling departure point for further discussions on how interpretations of national identity are changing in France and Sweden and beyond.

Book Synopsis English-Medium Instruction Pedagogies in Multilingual Universities in Asia by : Fan Fang
Download or read book English-Medium Instruction Pedagogies in Multilingual Universities in Asia written by Fan Fang and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together perspectives from emerging and established scholars, working from empirical data from real-life classroom experiences, to investigate pedagogical issues in the application of EMI across a range of educational contexts in Asia. Drawing on research across different levels of education covering institutions across various contexts across Asia, the book engages in key questions around power, marginalization, attitudes, intercultural communication, and identity construction as they unfold in classrooms in which a plurality of languages and varieties of English collide and are mediated, appropriated, and accommodated. The volume explores the pedagogical challenges, policies, and practices of EMI which emerge in these settings, highlighting real-life problems in EMI program development and the wider pedagogical implications for EMI implementation in varied educational environments. Taken together, the chapters offer opportunities for further research toward challenging traditionally held beliefs and blind implementation of EMI and encouraging critical perspectives from both researchers and policymakers alike. Pedagogies of English-Medium Instruction Programs in Asian Universities will be of interest to scholars and practitioners in English-medium instruction, English language teaching, TESOL, and applied linguistics.

Book Synopsis Challenges to the Global Trading System by : Sumner La Croix
Download or read book Challenges to the Global Trading System written by Sumner La Croix and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-03-21 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International trade continues to expand robustly in East Asia and elsewhere, but global trade negotiations have collapsed and globalization is widely criticized. In this book, the participants of the thirtieth Pacific Trade and Development Conference—including the then-Director General of the World Trade Organization, and leading government officials, academics and executives from a dozen major Pacific Rim economies—debate whether global negotiations have ended once and for all, or are suffering temporarily from ‘globalization fatigue;’ whether East Asia’s new regional partnerships will advance or undermine the global trading system; and whether the region’s trade tensions with the United States will intensify or subside. They provide new empirical evidence on how trade affects the distribution of income, the location of pollution-intensive industries, the causes of ‘outsourcing,’ the structure of the intellectual property regime, and international security. And they probe the implications of adjustment to globalization: how can countries reap the benefits of trade while controlling the risks faced by the poor and, perhaps more importantly, the politically strong? Challenges to the Global Trading System is an invaluable resource for students and scholars of Asia-Pacific studies, international relations and development studies, as well as those with a more general interest in Asian studies.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Companion to Strategic Human Resource Management by : John Storey
Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Strategic Human Resource Management written by John Storey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining up-to-date research, innovative content and practical perspectives, this book is the benchmark by which all other strategic HRM reference works should be measured. Leading figures from around the globe survey the current state of the discipline, while also introducing and exploring new, cutting edge themes in order to offer a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the field. Section introductions and integrative critiques pull together the separate themes to provide cross-comparisons between chapters to create a cohesive and well-structured volume. Unlike other texts in this area, The Routledge Companion to Strategic Human Resource Management incorporates contributions from leading management and business writers in areas adjacent to human resource management, including strategy, innovation and organizational learning. These add fresh and challenging insights into HRM themes from key mainstream business and management thinking. The field of strategic HRM is thus enriched and extended by this volume. Focusing on the interplay between theory and practice, this book is an essential resource for researchers and students studying human resource management and strategy.
