School administrators exhibit a god complex, and school police officers are caught in between the web of school politics that often interferes in enforcing the law equally to all. Today, students adverse behavior in the classroom no longer constitutes a delinquent conduct as per classroom discipline management rules, but rather, an act that has manifests itself into a criminal offense. Students are empowered to act bad when their own parents themselves refuse to correct their childrens maladaptive behavior by blaming others for their short comings. And this problem is further exasperated by school administrators who either use a strong arm tactic to curtail the problem or a too soft a hand to make an impression to get a child to exhibit positive behavior in the classroom. School administrators have a God complex where they walk around their campus expecting everyone, including school police officers, to do their biting. School administrators try to instill their own brand of justice by picking and choosing which students are to be charged with a criminal offense while others are allowed to continue their maladaptive behaviors. School police officers find themselves in a very precarious situation where they must wear different hats to address different issues that arise in the classroom. School police officers are like band-aides that are place on a wound, it is a cure all fix all approach to making problems go away, unfortunately, when dealing with the school community school police officers, and law enforcement in general, cannot use a band-aide to make things better as police work in a school setting is a web of complex issues that fosters misunderstanding among members of the school and law enforcement communities.

Book excerpt: A COP'S LIFE... is about a midnight call that brings you to a grandmother battered to death in her bed while three punks go running and laughing through the night.... A COP'S LIFE... is about the man in the Ninja outfit who absorbs a full magazine of hollowpoint bullets and still raises his gun to kill you... A COP'S LIFE... is about the honor student, the pride and hope of his family, hanging from a speaker wire, or the baby who dies in your arms, or the people who think you're a hero--or the devil... In this powerful collection of tales from the frontlines, Las Vegas police sergeant Randy Sutton goes beyond the neon into the dark corners of society, putting us into the driver's seat of his cruiser and a job that ricochets from moments of sheer terror to coffee-fueled boredom--with stops on the way at every conceivable act of human folly and depravity. With a poet's touch, and the unflinching realism of a crime scene photograph, A COP'S LIFE is the ultimate depiction of the hardest job there is. "Brilliantly evokes the tormented inner life of the average cop." --Publishers Weekly (starred review) "A compelling, sometimes wrenching, always insightful read that takes us into the soul of a working cop." --John Lescroart, New York Times bestselling author of The Second Chair and The Motive

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law enforcement has evolved greatly over the past many years, and that’s not just in reference to the myriad of newer, better, quicker forensics to help investigate and solve crimes. It’s referring to basically everything involved in law enforcement from the uniforms to the cars to the working conditions, assignments, rank, etc. Basically everything that is except the people who actually do the job. Over a total of near 20 years, the police officer is still in the ‘Cro-Magnon’ stage of development. There are some who have progressed further than others, but the ‘higher life forms’ in the job tend to somehow avoid rank that seems reserved for the non-evolved. What happens in a day in the life of a police officer? Much of it is probably not at all what the average citizen thinks. Not by a long shot. Real Cops Don’t Pay For Lunch tries to outline “...a day in the life...” honestly (sometimes embarrassingly so), clearly, and often amusingly. The guy who couldn’t complete a sentence when he was stopped for speeding because “...someone just called my wife – AND THEY JUST HUNG UP!” Another somewhat eccentric gentleman who was horrified to find he had a pocket full of change and proceeded to disburse said change across three of the six lanes of the highway he was on. Neither of them got a ticket. Several women who opted for the crying routine, however, were ticketed. None of this yet even takes into account the brass and the caste system in place at many police departments; brass who have committed atrocities that fully earned them that hunk of limburger cheese on their manifold. This was completely unbeknownst to them, of course, but it certainly delivered the message. Real Cops covers all this and more. Barney Miller watch out!

Joe Massey (Retired) shuns the idea of being politically correct with this insider's account of what it's like to be a Washington, D.C. police officer. He leads readers on a series of adventures that span thirty years in law enforcement, beginning as a police rookie in 1983, to his days with the force's elite SWAT team, to his days with the force's Harbor Patrol Branch, and right up to his retirement in 2012. He learned early on that being a police officer is like being an artist: It's open to interpretation. You must make nonbelievers believe and crush anyone who challenges your authority. Over time, his fellow officers became family, and they supported each other through good times and bad. They did their jobs no matter how dangerous the situation-and concerns about public perception rarely entered the equation. Develop a newfound respect for the dangers that police officers face on a daily basis, as well as changes that are leading to "The Erosion of the Thin Blue Line."

Book excerpt: AhhhhhhThe day to day life of most police officers is usually filled with plenty of verbal abuse, mean looks, threats and frustration..and then, he goes to WORK ! Everyone who has ever been a cop soon learns that many times his worst enemy actually wears a badge, and so the joust begins. Not only does he have to watch his back from the public, he has his own kind to fear. Most cops fit into three categories; The honest hard working one who wants to further his education and be a professional; the bum who got his job because he knew someone and doesnt have to work if he doesnt want to, and last but not least; the ones who prefer to run their badge through your credit card machine, rather than pay the bill. This is a book about all of the above. Though many of the activities are funny, they sometimes created situations where someone could have gotten seriously hurt. For those of you still in law enforcement, I can only hope that my 35 years within its realm can help someone, somewhere, somehow. Enjoy this prose account of life in the crosshairs of the street thugs and drunk drivers. This book is both informative, funny and for mature audiences.

Book excerpt: I entered the New York Police Academy in 1965 and my first assignment was to the 23rd Precinct and then 13th Precinct on patrol and also with their Anti-Crime Unit. In 1970 I attended the Criminal Investigations Course and was assigned to Plainclothes duties with the Organized Crime Control Bureau investigating Gambling, Prostitution and Narcotics violations in Queens County. In 1974 I was transferred to the Special Operations Section. This unit was tasked with the investigation and surveillance of the Five New York Crime Families (Gambino, Columbo, Genovese, Giganti and Luchese). For several months I operated in an undercover capacity posing as a corrupt officer during which time the operation netted over $50,000 in cash and merchandise including an all- expense paid trip to Las Vegas for myself and my partner. We were being tested to see if we really were corrupt. As a result of this investigation over 40 members of Organized Crime were arrested and convicted. In 1979 I was promoted to Detective 3rd Grade and transferred to Queens County District Attorney’s Squad, where I continued my investigations of Organized Crime with the investigation of John Gotti and his crime family. This investigation led to my promotion to Detective 2nd Grade. In 1985 I retired after 20 years of service.

Book excerpt: From the creator of HBO's The Wire, the classic book about homicide investigation that became the basis for the hit television show The scene is Baltimore. Twice every three days another citizen is shot, stabbed, or bludgeoned to death. At the center of this hurricane of crime is the city's homicide unit, a small brotherhood of hard men who fight for whatever justice is possible in a deadly world. David Simon was the first reporter ever to gain unlimited access to a homicide unit, and this electrifying book tells the true story of a year on the violent streets of an American city. The narrative follows Donald Worden, a veteran investigator; Harry Edgerton, a black detective in a mostly white unit; and Tom Pellegrini, an earnest rookie who takes on the year's most difficult case, the brutal rape and murder of an eleven-year-old girl. Originally published fifteen years ago, Homicide became the basis for the acclaimed television show of the same name. This new edition—which includes a new introduction, an afterword, and photographs—revives this classic, riveting tale about the men who work on the dark side of the American experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torture is an open secret in Chicago. Nobody in power wants to acknowledge this grim reality, but everyone knows it happens—and that the torturers are the police. Three to five new claims are submitted to the Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission of Illinois each week. Four hundred cases are currently pending investigation. Between 1972 and 1991, at least 125 black suspects were tortured by Chicago police officers working under former Police Commander Jon Burge. As the more recent revelations from the Homan Square “black site” show, that brutal period is far from a historical anomaly. For more than fifty years, police officers who took an oath to protect and serve have instead beaten, electrocuted, suffocated, and raped hundreds—perhaps thousands—of Chicago residents. In The Torture Letters, Laurence Ralph chronicles the history of torture in Chicago, the burgeoning activist movement against police violence, and the American public’s complicity in perpetuating torture at home and abroad. Engaging with a long tradition of epistolary meditations on racism in the United States, from James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time to Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me, Ralph offers in this book a collection of open letters written to protesters, victims, students, and others. Through these moving, questing, enraged letters, Ralph bears witness to police violence that began in Burge’s Area Two and follows the city’s networks of torture to the global War on Terror. From Vietnam to Geneva to Guantanamo Bay—Ralph’s story extends as far as the legacy of American imperialism. Combining insights from fourteen years of research on torture with testimonies of victims of police violence, retired officers, lawyers, and protesters, this is a powerful indictment of police violence and a fierce challenge to all Americans to demand an end to the systems that support it. With compassion and careful skill, Ralph uncovers the tangled connections among law enforcement, the political machine, and the courts in Chicago, amplifying the voices of torture victims who are still with us—and lending a voice to those long deceased.

Book excerpt: Named one of the best nonfiction books of the year by The Washington Post “Tangled Up in Blue is a wonderfully insightful book that provides a lens to critically analyze urban policing and a road map for how our most dispossessed citizens may better relate to those sworn to protect and serve.” —The Washington Post “Remarkable . . . Brooks has produced an engaging page-turner that also outlines many broadly applicable lessons and sensible policy reforms.” —Foreign Affairs Journalist and law professor Rosa Brooks goes beyond the "blue wall of silence" in this radical inside examination of American policing In her forties, with two children, a spouse, a dog, a mortgage, and a full-time job as a tenured law professor at Georgetown University, Rosa Brooks decided to become a cop. A liberal academic and journalist with an enduring interest in law's troubled relationship with violence, Brooks wanted the kind of insider experience that would help her understand how police officers make sense of their world—and whether that world can be changed. In 2015, against the advice of everyone she knew, she applied to become a sworn, armed reserve police officer with the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department. Then as now, police violence was constantly in the news. The Black Lives Matter movement was gaining momentum, protests wracked America's cities, and each day brought more stories of cruel, corrupt cops, police violence, and the racial disparities that mar our criminal justice system. Lines were being drawn, and people were taking sides. But as Brooks made her way through the police academy and began work as a patrol officer in the poorest, most crime-ridden neighborhoods of the nation's capital, she found a reality far more complex than the headlines suggested. In Tangled Up in Blue, Brooks recounts her experiences inside the usually closed world of policing. From street shootings and domestic violence calls to the behind-the-scenes police work during Donald Trump's 2016 presidential inauguration, Brooks presents a revelatory account of what it's like inside the "blue wall of silence." She issues an urgent call for new laws and institutions, and argues that in a nation increasingly divided by race, class, ethnicity, geography, and ideology, a truly transformative approach to policing requires us to move beyond sound bites, slogans, and stereotypes. An explosive and groundbreaking investigation, Tangled Up in Blue complicates matters rather than simplifies them, and gives pause both to those who think police can do no wrong—and those who think they can do no right.
