Book excerpt: ELIZABETHAN SONNET CYCLES FIVE MAJOR POETIC SEQUENCES Five Major Elizabethan Sonnet Sequences by Samuel Daniel, Michael Drayton, Sir Philip Sidney, William Shakespeare and Edmund Spenser. A collection of five major sonnet sequences from the Elizabethan era by some of the great poets of the period: Sir Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, Michael Drayton, Samuel Daniel and William Shakespeare. Each sonnet cycle is love poetry, and some of the finest verse in the English language: Sidney's 'Astrophel and Stella', Daniel's 'Delia', Drayton's 'Idea', Spenser's 'Amoretti', and Shakespeare's 'Sonnets'. This edition prints each poem cycle on its own, without notes or editorial intrusions. And each poem has a page to itself, rather than being crammed together. It's a useful edition for students. MICHAEL DRAYTON, SONNET 4, FROM 'IDEA': BRIGHT STAR of beauty, on whose eyelids sit A thousand nymph-like and enamoured graces, The goddesses of memory and wit, Which there in order take their several places; In whose dear bosom, sweet delicious love Lays down his quiver which he once did bear, Since he that blessed paradise did prove, And leaves his mother's lap to sport him there Let others strive to entertain with words My soul is of a braver mettle made; I hold that vile which vulgar wit affords; In me's that faith which time cannot invade. Let what I praise be still made good by you; Be you most worthy whilst I am most true! Includes the illustrations of the poets, and notes on further reading. The book is also in a hardback edition. The cadence of thy waves like human pain, Some deep, unconquered pang that stabs the heart, Rises and falls. When somnolent thou art, Bird-music soaring over thy refrain, Summer's effulgence, or the windless rain, Woo to forgetfulness; as poignant smart Of recollection sinks to music's part, And steals like old, sweet songs, across the brain. When boisterous winds upon the fretted shore Beat the deep fugue of thy tempestuous wave, Above all thought, all action, sounds the roar; So haunting memory, however brave The heart, from calm returneth evermore To sob its measure, sadder than the grave. Book excerpt: The "World" in Robert Lee Brewer's Solving the World's Problems is a slippery world ... where chaos always hovers near, where we are (and should be) "splashing around in dark puddles." And one feels a bit dizzy reading these poems because (while always clear, always full of meaning) they come at reality slantwise so that nothing is quite the same and the reader comes away with a new way of looking at the ordinary objects and events of life. The poems are brim-full of surprises and delights, twists in the language, double-meanings of words, leaps of thought and imagination, interesting line-breaks. There are love and relationship poems, dream poems, poems of life in the modern world. And always the sense (as he writes) of "pulling the world closer to me/leaves falling to the ground/ birds flying south." I read these once, twice with great enjoyment. I will go back to them often. -Patricia Fargnoli, former Poet Laureate of New Hampshire and author of Then, Something

Book excerpt: MICHAEL DRAYTON: IDEA: ELIZABETHAN SONNET CYCLE Michael Drayton's 'Idea' is one of the major Elizabethan sonnet sequences, reprinted here in an attractive new edition. 'Idea' is a sonnet cycle of love poetry, and some of the finest verse in the English language. The book includes a note on Michael Drayton, illustrations, and suggestions for further reading. Each poem has a page to itself. It's a useful edition for students. Michael Drayton was born in 1563 in Warwickshire. He worked as a page (for Sir Henry Goodyere, an early patron, and later for Lucy, Countess of Bedford), and esquire (for Sir Walter Aston). As well as poems he wrote plays (1597-1602). He died in 1631 and is buried in Westminster Abbey. Michael Drayton's 'Idea In Sixtie Three Sonnets' was revised a number of times by the author. It was published first in 1594, and was republished in 1599, 1600, 1602, 1605 and 1619. Anne Goodyere (the daughter of Sir Philip Sidney's friend Sir Henry Goodyere), is assumed to be the object of affection in the sonnet sequence (though it's not certain if they were romantically involved; Drayton remained a passionate admirer for most of his life, and hers. She was married to Sir Henry Rainsford from 1595 until Rainsford's death in 1622, after which Drayton continued as Anne's devotee). The name Idea also has Platonic associations.
