Book excerpt: SIGNS OF SHARING is a unique set of materials that provides educators whose responsibilities include the integration of hearing-impaired children, with a multifaceted tool to teach sign language and deaf awareness. Included is an initial section on mainstreaming deaf children in regular classrooms which is followed by a section on deaf awareness that provides complete information, goals, necessary materials, and step-by-step activities for a class to learn by the hands-on approach. The main section of the book is a complete teacher's guide to teach sign language to preschool through third grade students in classrooms and organizations. There are 28 lessons designed to provide creative, exciting, and fun ways to learn and use sign language. Each lesson includes a list of signs to be introduced, materials needed, and numerous activities to present and practice the signs. Each lesson contains sign cards, sign sheets, and activity or song sheets. Suggestions for the use of these materials are given in each lesson. The lessons are arranged to follow the natural progression of a school year. The drawings used to teach the signs are appealing, clear, easy to understand depictions of multicultural children, thus creating a child-oriented curriculum for learning about the world of deafness.

Abstract: ABSTRACT Children with hearing impairments experience particular difficulties in the acquisition of early communication skills and music therapy has been used to help them with language and communication. A 4-year-old hearing-impaired girl, who was integrated in a mainstream preschool and her normally developing classmates, participated in a music intervention program over a period of 26 weeks. This program included the normal elements of music teaching such as singing, playing instruments, moving to music, listening to music, and creating music as well as auditory training and speech and language training. Another hearing impaired child in a comparable preschool served as a control and participated in normal preschool music activities during the intervention period. Both children were assessed on their speech and language skills at prior to the intervention (Time 1) and after it (Time 2). Results indicated that the language scores of both children with hearing impairments were higher at Time 2 than at Time 1. However, the hearing-impaired child who received the music intervention program showed better progress than the other hearing-impaired child. Her teachers demonstrated creativity and showed greater flexibility and adaptability in curriculum planning. Furthermore, the positive outcome helped her parents rebuild their confidence. They were more motivated to share information with teachers and got themselves involved in her learning. The implications of the findings for preschool children with hearing impairments are discussed. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3554039 Subjects: Preschool music - Instruction and study - China - Hong Kong Hearing impaired children - China - Hong Kong - Education Preschool children - China - Hong Kong - Education

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most children with hearing loss attend neighborhood schools as the only student with hearing aids. These devices are the lifeline to their education yet malfunction is not uncommon. It is only the student who, with training, will be able to recognize and report when an issue occurs and can deal with it in the most timely manner. Building Skills for Independence in the Mainstream provides IEP goals and step-by-step materials to provide students with the skills they need to be independent with their hearing aids and to advocate for their listening and communication needs in the classroom. A hierarchy of expected skills by grade with specific activities for each has been included. Geared for students in preschool through elementary, this book will benefit parents and teachers who work with these children. The role of the student, classroom teacher and the teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing has been defined for each goal. The book has engaging color pages and also includes 51 downloadable files for easy sharing with classroom teachers and to facilitate skill-building by students.Purchase from http://successforkidswithhearingloss.com/buildingskills_independence

Book excerpt: Debates about methods of supporting language development and academic skills of deaf or hard-of-hearing children have waxed and waned for more than 100 years: Will using sign language interfere with learning to use spoken language or does it offer optimal access to communication for deaf children? Does placement in classrooms with mostly hearing children enhance or impede academic and social-emotional development? Will cochlear implants or other assistive listening devices provide deaf children with sufficient input for age-appropriate reading abilities? Are traditional methods of classroom teaching effective for deaf and hard-of-hearing students? Although there is a wealth of evidence with regard to each of these issues, too often, decisions on how to best support deaf and hard-of-hearing children in developing language and academic skills are made based on incorrect or incomplete information. No matter how well-intentioned, decisions grounded in opinions, beliefs, or value judgments are insufficient to guide practice. Instead, we need to take advantage of relevant, emerging research concerning best practices and outcomes in educating deaf and hard-of-hearing learners. In this critical evaluation of what we know and what we do not know about educating deaf and hard-of-hearing students, the authors examine a wide range of educational settings and research methods that have guided deaf education in recent years--or should. The book provides a focus for future educational and research efforts, and aims to promote optimal support for deaf and hard-of-hearing learners of all ages. Co-authored by two of the most respected leaders in the field, this book summarizes and evaluates research findings across multiple disciplines pertaining to the raising and educating of deaf children, providing a comprehensive but concise record of the successes, failures, and unanswered questions in deaf education. A readily accessible and invaluable source for teachers, university students, and other professionals, Evidence-Based Practice in Educating Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students encourages readers to reconsider assumptions and delve more deeply into what we really know about deaf and hard-of-hearing children, their patterns of development, and their lifelong learning.
