Book excerpt: This study presents the results of a cultural resources survey conducted by Coastal Environments, Inc., (CEl) of two segments of the proposed right-of-way (ROW) for drainage improvements along Jones Creek and its tributaries in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. The improvements are part of a larger project undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New Orleans District, in cooperation with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Public Works, the City of Baton Rouge, and East Baton Rouge Parish to construct drainage improvements in the Amite River and Tributaries, East Baton Rouge Parish Watershed Flood Control Project. The areas selected for study are located near two previously reported prehistoric archaeological sites: l6EBRl3 and 16EBR26. The project area for l6EBRl3 encompassed approximately 4.6 acres and that for 16EBR26 encompassed approximately 6.6 acres. Fieldwork for this project, consisting of an intensive pedestrian survey that included shovel tests and auger borings, was conducted by a three-person team. No significant standing structures were located in the project area. No archaeological remains were encountered, and no further work is necessary.

Book excerpt: This document presents the results of an investigation by R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., between Aug 11 and Sep 2, 2003, for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. The proposed project area is located along the east-descending bank of the Mississippi River between River Mile 101.6 and 102.5 in Orleans Parish, LA. The terrestrial portion of the proposed Area of Potential Effect encompassed an area that measured approximately 1.56 ha (3.86 ac) of land, while the submerged portion of the study area encompassed 11.1 ha (27.44 ac) in size. This undertaking incorporated in-depth historical research of the proposed project area and its surroundings; a detailed review of previously collected underwater remote sensing data provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District; and a Phase I cultural resources survey and archeological inventory of the terrestrial portion of the proposed Area of Potential Effect. All fieldwork was performed in accordance with federal and state guidelines and regulations. During the current investigation, Site I 6ORl 90 (Shipwreck #2), the submerged remains of the Eads-designed gunboat Chickasaw, and Site l6ORl99 (Shipwreck# 11), the remains of the catamaran river ferry A.M. Halliday, were found to potentially possess qualities of significance by National Register criteria. Because current project plans call for the emplacement of stone around and immediately adjacent to these two vessels, the proposed undertaking will serve to stabilize the vessels in place, beneficial to long term preservation. No intact archaeological sites were found on the terrestrial portion of the project area and no additional testing is recommended in the area.

Book excerpt: Heartfield, Price and Greene, Inc. of Monroe, Louisiana, was contracted by the United States Corps of Engineers, Mobile District to perform a literature search of a one-mile-wide corridor adjacent to the Pearl River south of Ross Barnett Reservoir. This report has collected and synthesized geological, archeological, ethnographic and historic data pertaining to the study area. This study has revealed that very little research regarding the cultural resources of the corridor has been done. Human use of the area has been documented for all of the major period of prehistory except Coles Creek. In many cases, however, only a few sites provide the evidence for these time periods. Research problems and gaps in the literature are discussed. Recommendations and future goals for the study area are presented and an annotated bibliography is provided.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a Phase I Archeological Remote Sensing Survey of the Vermilion River in Lafayette and Vermilion parishes, louisiana. These investigations were conducted from November 1 - 9, 2000, by R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., on behalf of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District (USACE-NOD), in support of the proposed maintenance dredging of approximately 17.3 miles of the Vermilion River. This study was undertaken to assist the USACE-NOD to satisfy its responsibilities under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, prior to the disposal of dredged material at this location. All aspects of the investigations were completed in compliance with the Scope-of-Work and with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation (Federal Register 48, No 190, 1983). The study area for this project consisted of nine survey blocks, each measuring approximately two miles long and consisting of 1 to 3 adjacent lines, depending on the width and depth of the river and the amount of encumbering debris. The survey area measured a total of 92,400 ft in length, with an average width of 132 ft and encompassed approximately 281.3 acres. The objectives of this study were to identity specific targets that might represent significant submerged cultural resources, modem debris, pipelines, cables, or related items within the project area, and to provide the USACE-NOD with management recommendations for any cultural resources present. These objectives were met applying a research design that combined background archival investigations and a riverine archeological remote sensing survey. Background archival investigations indicated a low potential for encountering submerged historic cultural resources within the project area. A review of louisiana archeological site files and relevant research reports documented no sites within the survey area.
