Book excerpt: The world’s most revered and eloquent interpreter of evolutionary ideas offers here a work of explanatory force unprecedented in our time—a landmark publication, both for its historical sweep and for its scientific vision. With characteristic attention to detail, Stephen Jay Gould first describes the content and discusses the history and origins of the three core commitments of classical Darwinism: that natural selection works on organisms, not genes or species; that it is almost exclusively the mechanism of adaptive evolutionary change; and that these changes are incremental, not drastic. Next, he examines the three critiques that currently challenge this classic Darwinian edifice: that selection operates on multiple levels, from the gene to the group; that evolution proceeds by a variety of mechanisms, not just natural selection; and that causes operating at broader scales, including catastrophes, have figured prominently in the course of evolution. Then, in a stunning tour de force that will likely stimulate discussion and debate for decades, Gould proposes his own system for integrating these classical commitments and contemporary critiques into a new structure of evolutionary thought. In 2001 the Library of Congress named Stephen Jay Gould one of America’s eighty-three Living Legends—people who embody the “quintessentially American ideal of individual creativity, conviction, dedication, and exuberance.” Each of these qualities finds full expression in this peerless work, the likes of which the scientific world has not seen—and may not see again—for well over a century.

This point of view is a healthy reaction to the over-confident belief that we knew everything about evolution. There are even those rash enough to think that in the last few years we have learned more about evolution than we might have hoped to know a few years ago. A critique therefore not only becomes a criticism of the older evidence but an appreciation of the new evidence.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Genetics HE third reprinting Of the Vanuxem Lectures for 1915-16, entitled A Critique of the Theory of Evolution, having been exhausted, the publishers have asked for a revised edition. The revision is no less an attempt at a critique Of the evolution theory than its predecessor, but, as the change in title sug gests, greater attention is here paid to one Of the most debated questions among evolutionists today, namely, the bearing Of the recent discoveries in genetics and in mutation on the theory Of evolution. While in a general way Darwin's theory Of Natu ral Selection is independent Of the origin Of the new variations that furnish it with its materials, yet the scientific formulation Of the theory is intimately con nected with the origin and inheritance Of suitable vari ations. For instance, if most of the observed variabil ity Of animals and plants were due directly to the environment, and if the effects thus brought about were not inherited, such variability could no longer be appealed to as material for natural selection. Again, if the variations that appear as mutants are always defective types, they could not, even though they are inherited, be appealed to as furnishing ma terial for progressive evolution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution Hypothesis: A Criticism of the New Cosmic Philosophy The Evolution Hypothesis has stamped its impress on the thought of our time. It claims to dominate the whole field of experience, and to direct all inquiry. As a theory of universal truth, it lies open to the criticism of every student of philosophy. How far in certain groups of physical phenomena it expresses justly the law of change, I do not discuss. Examination in detail, over the whole extent of the knowable, can be effectively conducted only by division of labour among many workers, each handling some part of the question, which he has made the subject of special study. In this way the measure of truth contained in the hypothesis must ultimately be defined. My purpose is to deal with the theory as it undertakes to formulate the entire cosmic movement within the knowable - as it aims at the unification of all knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Evolution: With Special Reference to the Evidence Upon Which It Is Founded A new book on evolution, which can lay little claim to novelty of fact or treatment, certainly demands an explanation, if not an apology. My choice of subject for the Westbrook lectures Of 1914 was determined by the very general misapprehension in the public mind concerning the present status Of the evolutionary theory among men Of science. It is widely believed that the theory is an outworn device, which naturalists are beginning to discard and that soon it will have a merely historical in terest. This misunderstanding, for such it is, has arisen from the debates among zoologists and botan ists as to the manner in which evolution has actually occurred and the efficient causes which have brought it about, and, further, from the ambiguous way in which the term Darwinism is Often employed. Frequently, the term is made a synonym of evolu tion, but it ought properly to be restricted to Dar win's explanation Of evolution by natural selection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Synthesis of Evolutionary Theory By combining new ideas from different disciplines, evolutionary studies bring out new perspectives which in turn continuously gen erate new questions. Efforts to answer evolutionary questions lead to new ways of framing inquiries in affected disciplines. The analysis of whole communities, for example, has been considered by several writers (andrewartha and Birch, 1954) as too complex a problem to be fathomed through the use of present ecological research methods. Because existing biotic communities are the products of past evolution, a knowledge of the principles of their evolutionary history will undoubtedly lead to new conceptual foundations valu able in community analysis. As the physicist, astronomer, and his torian Rudolf Thiel has said, Only knowledge of how a thing be came what it is gives us a feeling of really understanding it. We are not satisfied with insight into the character of things; we must fathom their origins before we feel that we have begun to reach the ultimate truth about them. The examples have been chosen carefully with two thoughts in mind. First has been the desire to choose those which would help to explain ideas with the greatest clarity. Second has been the hope that these examples would assist the reader in understanding how data from his investigations might fit into and augment evolutionary concepts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Walter Friedman exposes internal contradictions that nullify the theory of evolution. He also reveals the ways Charles Darwin falsified observation data to promote his pseudoscientific discovery. In a variety of ways, Friedman aims to undercut the logical assumptions of evolutionary theory. First, he applies elementary probability theory to show that a random mutation cannot spread to an entire population, which means that the evolution of species is a myth. Friedman further contends that the centerpiece of Darwin's theory--the hypothesis of natural selection--is also a statistical impossibility, as simple arithmetic reveals. Third, he turns to genetics data to demonstrate that the idea of the evolution of species leads to ridiculous conclusions. Next, Friedman employs anthropological findings of so-called human ancestors to argue the reverse of what anthropologists believe to be true-- that evolution never took place. Fifth, Friedman appeals to the laws of physics to explain why it is impossible, in principle, for inorganic matter to transform into organic matter with a DNA-like structure. Darwin's racist view of people of African descent and its legal implications for the teaching of the evolutionary theory in public schools are also investigated. The last section of the book provides extensive criticism of the books written by prominent evolutionists, including Darwin. Friedman points out that a vast majority of false scientific theories stumbled and fell not because they were replaced by new, more sophisticated theories, but simply because of an abundance of conflicting statements and disagreement with the experimental data. For the same reasons, he finally asserts, the theory of evolution is destined for oblivion.
