This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fictional Scene In England, Immediately After The Second World War, Makes An Interesting Reading. Many Critical Studies Have, In Great Depth, Investigated The Historical Processes To Highlight The Various Directions The Novelists Moved In Then. At The Same Time, There Was A Concurrent And A Deliberate Attempt On The Part Of These Novelists To Discard The Heritage Of 'Modernism.' Iris Murdoch, Who Is One Of The Most Prominent Novelists Of This Period, Also Shared The Distrust Of Her Contemporaries For The So-Called Literary Radicalism. However, She Remains Distinct As A Writer Among Her Contemporaries, In Her Awareness Of The Problems Of The Novel And Language, In Her Adherence, Both To The Idealism About Human Potentiality And Perfectibility That Liberal Humanism Had Contained. But She Is Also Conscious Of The Limited Individual Capacity To Reach That Ideal. Her Creative Career Is Marked By Her Desire To Bring Back To The Novel, Some Of Its Earlier Comprehensive Vision Of Life, Society And Human Character. The Present Book Attempts To Reveal Those Important Areas Of Murdoch'S Thought Which Set Her Apart From Other Novelists Writing At That Time. Her Search For Literary Metaphors Which Aim At Restoring To Novel Some Of Its Lost Moorings Is A Significant, Almost Iconoclastic Effort. Taking Help From Her Non-Fictional Treatises, An Attempt Has Been Made In This Book To Highlight The Platonic Burden Of Her Literary And Aesthetic Creed.
Book Synopsis The Critical Merits of Young Adult Literature by : Crag Hill
Download or read book The Critical Merits of Young Adult Literature written by Crag Hill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of the literary effectiveness of young adult literature from a critical, research-oriented perspective answers two key questions asked by many teachers and scholars in the field: Does young adult literature stand up on its own as literature? Is it worthy of close study? The treatment is both conceptual and pragmatic. Each chapter discusses a topical text set of YA novels in a conceptual framework—how these novels contribute to or deconstruct conventional wisdom about key topics from identity formation to awareness of world issues, while also providing a springboard in secondary and college classrooms for critical discussion of these novels. Uncloaking many of the issues that have been essentially invisible in discussions of YA literature, these essays can then guide the design of curriculum through which adolescent readers hone the necessary skills to unpack the ideologies embedded in YA narratives. The annotated bibliography provides supplementary articles and books germane to all the issues discussed. Closing "End Points" highlight and reinforce cross-cutting themes throughout the book and tie the essays together.

Download or read book William Golding written by Philip Redpath and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1986 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended for all readers of William Golding, whether they be students, professional critics, or casual readers. Thirty years after the publication of Lord of the Flies, a complete Golding bibliography would consist of well over 2000 entries. To add to this mass of exegesis must be at the risk of burying Golding's work under yet more writing about his writing. This study does not claim to be an "interpretation" of the novels: it does not set out to explain what they mean. Rather, the aim has been to explore the ways in which the novels create meaning.

This book is the first to provide a thorough yet accessible overview of Conrad scholarship and criticism spanning the entire history of Conrad studies, from the 1895 publication of his first book, Almayer's Folly, to the present. While tracing the general evolution of the commentary surrounding Conrad's work, John G. The breadth and scope of Peters's study make this text an essential resource for Conrad scholars and students of English literature and literary criticism"--

Book Synopsis Paul Scott, a Critical Study by : Francine Schneider Weinbaum
Download or read book Paul Scott, a Critical Study written by Francine Schneider Weinbaum and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When The Jewel in the Crown aired on British and American television in the early 1980s, many people who had never read Paul Scott's Raj Quartet, on which it is based, became engrossed in his sweeping tale of India in the waning days of the Raj. At the same time, however, some literary critics, displaying a scholarly prejudice against popular success, dismissed the literary worth of Scott's novels. In this comprehensive study of all thirteen Scott novels, Francine Weinbaum takes issue with these critics and makes a persuasive claim for The Raj Quartet as a masterpiece of twentieth-century literature. After a biographical chapter, Weinbaum discusses Scott's earlier novels as thematic and technical precursors of The Raj Quartet (The Jewel in the Crown, The Day of the Scorpion, The Towers of Silence, and A Division of the Spoils). She traces in the Quartet a dynamic of reality and illusion that underlies the protagonists' struggle for love, the antagonists' striving for power and privilege, and the central theme of the search for union between England and India, whites and nonwhites, and soul and body. A final chapter demonstrates how the protagonists of the early and middle novel--repressed, depressed, introverted, and inadequate figures--are transformed into the life-affirming, tragic figures of The Raj Quartet, who are imprisoned not so much by psychological forces as by historical and social ones. In exploring the theme of thwarted union in The Raj Quartet and relating it to Scott's own life and inner world, Weinbaum opens a new door into the works of Paul Scott for both scholars and the reading public.
