Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical History of Philosophy, Vol. 2 of 2 Necessary Ideas and General Notions or Conceptions distinguished. Among thinkers of the Transcendental School especially, much is said about the distinction between ideas (necessary ideas), that of time or space, for example, and general conceptions, such as are represented by the term man, animal, or creature. While this discrimination is made, the essential characteristics which separate these phenomena of thought from each other are not generally understood. Let us see if we cannot apprehend the reason and ground of this discrimination. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Philosophy, Vol. 2 of 3 In accordance with the character of the different epochs, modern philosophy has to rise above the philosophical wisdom of the ancients and the theological wisdom of lthe imiddle Ages. N o theories will meet the requirements of modern times, nor deserve the name of philosophy except such as recognise both the here, or real, of antiquity, and the hereafter, or ideal, of the Middle Ages, and attempt to reconcile the two. Any system which left one of these sides out.of account, or which did not admit that there was a point where the two coincided, would cease to be philosophical.' And the differ ence between systems depends upon the different manner in which these two sides are conceived of (as extension and thought, as nature and spirit, as real and rational, and in a Special degree upon the different methods of reconciling them. In the latter lies the main feature, and, therefore, the real principle of any system of modern philosophy. In the period of transition from the Middle Ages, there appeared side by side the philosophers who forgot God, and the mystics who despised the world. They Showed where the point Was to be found from which both natural and supernatural know ledge are seen to be' subordinate and partial aspects of a whole. For the Microcosmos of the' former, and the Micro theos or, God in miniature, of bohme, is.man, whose function. Is, to introduce thoughts of God into the world, to lead it to God. When philosophy becomes know ledge of man, it. Does more than merely transcend the one-sidedness of knowledge of the' Cosmos, and. Of know ledge of God; it now for the first time corresponds to our idea of it 2 and. Henceforth the path that philosophy follows is not to reach self by starting from the world or from God, but to start from self and find one's way back to a world and to God. He had early imbibed a great love of philosophy, and had diligently studied the writings of Parmenides and the other Eleatics. From Zeno he acquired great facility in dialectics; and this continued to be his chief excellence, even after his acquaintance with Socrates, who reproved him for it as sophistical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of California Publications in Philosophy, Vol. 2 At the very beginning, however, we seem to find in Plotinus the very opposite of dialectic thought; for we find him declaring, with constant iteration, that the Real is One. Dialectical thought, on the contrary, emphatically asserts the many in one. Again, we find him seemingly divesting the world of quality after qual ity, until even the innermost core is abstracted, and nothing is left. Dialectical thought, on the contrary, is synthetic, lifting each limited and one-sided phase to a meaning and reality more richly inclusive, until the Whole is consummated in that which is at once the source and container of all that is real. Is not the One of Plotinus the analytic one of empty, formal identity, the inane goal of a via negativa? This is the condemnation of P10 tinus that has been most widely pronounced. The purpose of the present paper is to attempt a vindication of the synthetic char acter of Plotinus's philosophy, an exhibition of his thought as, in truth, not the departure from, but the further development of the tentative dialectic of his predecessors. In order to this, we must examine in all essential details the meaning which Plotinus assigns to the One. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Philosophy, From the Earliest Times to the Beginning of the Present Century, Vol. 2 of 2: Drawn Up From Brucker's Historia Critica Philosophiae Animated by such examples, many other persons of eminence in Rome attached themselves to the study of philosophy, particularly among those who were devoted to the profession of the law. Quintin Tubero, n a ne phew of Scipio Africanus, who was at this time one of the most celebrated masters of civil law, was also conver not with philosophical learning, and professed himself a follower of the Stacie sect. The moral doctrine of this sect was peculiarly suitable to his natural temper, and to the habits of temperance and moderation which he had learned from his father, one of those excellent Romans, who, in the highest offices of the state, retained the simplicity of rustic manners. Confirmed in these habits by the precepts of Panaetius, when Tubero was called upon, as proctor, to give a public entertainment in honour of his uncle, he provided only wooden couches covered with goat-skins, earthen vessels, and a frugal repast. The people, who expected a splendid feast, were dissatisfied, and dismissed him from his oflice: but the action reflected no discredit either upon the lawyer or the philosopher; for it was, as Seneca remarks, an instructive lesson of moderation to m Romans, who, when they saw the sacred tables of Jupiter served with earthen vessels, would learn that men ought to be contented with such things as the gods them selves did not disdain to use. Panaetius dedicated to his pupil a treatise upon patience, and advised him to commit to memory the discourses of the academic Crates concern ing grief whence it appears, that Tubero studied the Stoic philosophy chiefly with a view to the conduct of life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Critical Philosophy of Immanuel Kant, Vol. 1 of 2 The object of this book is to give a connected view of the Critical Philosophy, showing the relations of the three Critiques to each other, and to the other works of Kant which may be regarded as illustrations or developments of his main argument. The first part, on the Critique of Pure Reason, deals with the same subject as my former work, entitled The Philosophy of Kant, but, except in a few passages, it is not a reproduction of it. Since the date of its publication, many important contributions to the study of Kant have been made in Germany and other countries. I wish especially to express my indebtedness to the writings of Dr. Vaihinger, Benno Erdmann, Cohen, Paulsen, Arnoldt, Stadtler, Staudinger, and Riehl; also of the late Professor Green and Professor Watson. In particular, Dr. Erdmann's publication of the Reflexionen Kant's has thrown much new light on the development of the Kantian philosophy, and Dr. Vaihinger's acute statement of the main Kantian in his Commentary is full of instruction and suggestion for every student. I have sometimes given references to these and other writers; but often I have found it impossible to recall or to trace what I owe to them, and must content myself in the main with this general acknowledgment of my obligations. I also owe much to the criticisms of my former book by various writers, particularly by Dr. Hutchison Stirling, by Mr. Balfour, and by Dr. Vaihinger; and I have attempted to meet them by giving a more careful and accurate statement of Kant's argument, and a fuller and more thorough estimate of its bearing and value.
