Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work supplements the author's two-volume Old English Syntax (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1985). It contains what is intended to be a bibliography complete to the end of 1984, of books, doctoral dissertations, articles, notes and reviews, on the syntax of Old English, with cross-references and with comments on items other than reviews; a subject index thereto; and the index of authors and reviewers which is (by design) missing in Old English Syntax but which gives references to both books. It provides an introduction, a section dealing with general works, eleven chapters which parallel those in Old English Syntax, and three appendixes which include inter alia addenda and corrigenda to Old English Syntax. All items other than reviews are allotted a number and some important post-1984 publications are included. There are some 1150 numbered items, later additions being marked A or B. The bias of previous work is demonstrated by the fact that over 45% of these are on chapter II, "The Parts of Speech and their Functions". Three categories are marked by symbols: the first indicates items which can now safely be disregarded, the second those discussed and evaluated in Old English Syntax, and the third those written from a "modern linguistic" point of view. There are deliberate omissions: no reviews are listed for items 1-50A (bibliographies, dictionaries, and grammars) or for collections from which individual items are cited, and abstracts of conference papers are excluded. Items concerned with prefixes and "phrasal verbs" (OES, sections 1060-80) and with element order (OES, sections 3887-951) have been divided into appropriate groups without critical comments for individual items. The word "critical" in the title reflects the fact that the author's overwhelming loyalty is to Old English Syntax and to users of this book, not to the writers whose work he discusses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Distinguished by a remarkable combination of erudition and lucidity, Aspects of Old English Poetic Syntax provides new insight into the rules that govern syntactic relationships and indicates how these rules differ for prose and verse. Blockley considers the functions of four of the most common and most syntactically important words in Old English, as well as such features of clauses as verb-initial order, negative contraction, and unexpressed but understood subjects. Picking up where Bruce Mitchell's classic Old English Syntax left off, Blockley shows how such common words and structures mark the relationships between phrases and clauses.".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a major reader of Old English, the language spoken by the Anglo-Saxons before the Norman Conquest. Designed both for beginning and for more advanced students, it broke new ground in two ways, first in its range of texts, and second in the degree of annotation it offers. The fifty-six prose and verse texts include the established favourites such as The Battle of Maldon and King Alfred's Preface to his Pastoral Care, but also others which have not before been readily available, such as a complete Easter homily, Aelfric's life of Saint Aethelthryth and all forty-six Durham proverbs. Headnotes establish the literary and historical contexts for the works that are represented, and reflect the rich cultural variety of Anglo-Saxon England. Modern English word glosses and explanatory notes are provided on the same page as the text. Other features include a reference grammar and a comprehensive glossary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1940, this book was written in 'an attempt to drive a few main lines through the almost unexplored tract of Old English syntax'. The text also reaches important conclusions regarding the characteristic features of Old English style and its close relationship with syntactical elements, both in prose and verse. Reference is frequently made to the 'traditional text' of Beowulf. That is to say, the text as it was usually punctuated by editors at the time of publication. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Old English and linguistics.

Book excerpt: This corpus-based study examines the lexical field of theft in the Anglo-Saxon law-codes and documents containing reports of lawsuits (charters, writs, and some chapters of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle). The individual Old English lexemes are analysed not only in terms of their meaning, collocation patterns, and Latin translations, but also, more unusually in a field-approach, with reference to their distribution over the various textual genres and the discourse strategies dominant in these. Although primarily linguistic in focus, a detailed description of the theft-offences and the wider context in which they occur should also be of interest to the historian.
