Book Synopsis Aspects of Old English Poetic Syntax by : Mary Eva Blockley
Download or read book Aspects of Old English Poetic Syntax written by Mary Eva Blockley and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Distinguished by a remarkable combination of erudition and lucidity, Aspects of Old English Poetic Syntax provides new insight into the rules that govern syntactic relationships and indicates how these rules differ for prose and verse. Blockley considers the functions of four of the most common and most syntactically important words in Old English, as well as such features of clauses as verb-initial order, negative contraction, and unexpressed but understood subjects. Picking up where Bruce Mitchell's classic Old English Syntax left off, Blockley shows how such common words and structures mark the relationships between phrases and clauses.".

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1940, this book was written in 'an attempt to drive a few main lines through the almost unexplored tract of Old English syntax'. Reference is frequently made to the 'traditional text' of Beowulf. That is to say, the text as it was usually punctuated by editors at the time of publication. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Old English and linguistics.

Book Synopsis The Syntax of Prenominal and Postnominal Adjectives in Old English by : Agnieszka Pysz
Download or read book The Syntax of Prenominal and Postnominal Adjectives in Old English written by Agnieszka Pysz and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first monograph which provides a comprehensive discussion of the syntactic behaviour of Old English (OE) adnominal adjectives. Drawing on the empirical data retrieved from the York-Toronto-Helsinki Parsed Corpus of Old English Prose (Taylor, Warner, Pintzuk & Beths 2003), the author proposes an analysis of OE adjectives by means of a theoretical apparatus couched in the framework of Chomskyâ (TM)s generative grammar. The analysis incorporates the following properties of OE adjectives: â [ their inflectional patterning, i.e. whether adjectives take â oeweakâ and â oestrongâ inflectional endings â [ the so-called adjective stacking, i.e. whether adjectives can occur in uninterrupted strings â [ the surface placement with respect to their complements â [ the surface placement with respect to the nominal head The author observes that the differences between prenominal and postnominal adjectives go far beyond the superficial difference in their surface placement. She argues therefore that the two types of adjectives require two different theoretical treatments. The volume consists of five chapters. It is supplemented by four appendices and an extensive bibliography.

Book Synopsis Studies on Old High German Syntax by : Katrin Axel
Download or read book Studies on Old High German Syntax written by Katrin Axel and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07-19 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is the first book-length study on Old High German syntax from a generative perspective in twenty years. It provides an in-depth exploration of the Old High German pre-verb-second grammar by answering the following questions: To what extent did generalized verb movement exist in Old High German? Was there already obligatory XP-movement to the left periphery in declarative root clauses? What deviations from the linear verb-second restriction are attested and what do such phenomena reveal about the structure of the left sentence periphery? Did verb placement play the same role in sentence typing as in the modern verb-second languages? A further major topic is null subjects: It is claimed that Old High German was a partial pro-drop language. All these issues are addressed from a comparative-diachronic perspective by integrating research on other Old Germanic languages, in particular on Old English and Gothic. This book is of interest to all those working in the fields of comparative Germanic syntax and historical linguistics.
