Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Christian Socialism: A Conversational Exposition of the True System of Human Society; In Three Parts, Viz The author desires that this book should be read and thor oughly studied by all who are capable of appreciating it. It was not written to amuse the votaries of light literature, but to instruct susceptible and ingenuous minds. It is commended to honest, earnest, patient, discriminating, comprehensive thinkers, who are endeavoring to be judicious, uncompromising, indom itable workers for humanity. It is the fruit of patient reflection and ripe experience. It is not perfect, and will hereafter be improved; but it is worthy of all the consideration solicited in its behalf. It claims to be an exposition or the true system oehuman society; and such it is. It presents, theoretically, a complete Social Superstructure, from foundation to pinnacle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Socialism Dear Sir, I dedicate to you this little volume on Christian Socialism because you are the oldest surviving member of that movement in England, and one who has never ceased from the first to believe and to teach others to believe in the eternal principles of Truth, Hope, and Love in the pursuit of a higher social ideal. One of the original promoters of co-operation, itself the beloved offspring of Christian Socialism, its legal adviser in times when as yet it was unprotected by tho law, you have never since ceased to impress upon its members tho higher law of Christian love as a paramount force in society. While others have lost faith in their fellow-men and voluntary effort, you have continued, hoping against hope and with "munificent trustfulness" in principle, to advocate the cause of co-operative union on higher than commercial principles, to accentuate tho importance of the moral and religious factors in co-operative industry, and to aspire "after a union over widening into that all-embracing federation to which the social reformer looks forward." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed Explained, or an Exposition of Catholic Doctrine The following work, which I am now giving to the public, has for its object to promote Catholic truth by explaining Catholic doctrine as contained in the "Creeds," and as it is defined and interpreted by the Church. It contains the summary and substance of lectures and instructions which for several years I have been accustomed to give to students and pupils; and in it I have endeavoured to explain the twelve Articles of the Creed, as well as the more recent definitions and declarations of the Church on matters of faith as contained in the decrees of the Vatican Council, and the constitutions of the Sovereign Pontiffs. I have not thought it necessary to make the work in any sense a controversial one, because I believe that a clear and accurate exposition of Catholic doctrine is the best means of promoting its knowledge, and the best remedy against misrepresentations, and the dishonest criticisms of our adversaries; and also the best refutation of the many false theories of Christianity against which we have to contend, in order to guard the true doctrine of Christ, and make it known to the people. In the manner of treating the subject, I first give an introductory treatise on the virtue of faith, together with the full text of all the "Creeds" that are approved by the Church, and professed by the faithful. Afterwards, I give the text of the "Apostles' Creed" and of the "Nicene Creed" at the head of each Article as the subject of the instructions and explanations which follow. In the explanation of the Articles I state the doctrine, explain its meaning, and then give the proofs of its truth, taken from the usual Theological sources - Sacred Scripture, Tradition, the definitions of the Church, the authority of Fathers and Theologians, and reason. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Socialism and Its Opponents And I trust that those of us who have entered upon this undertaking, have done so, not although, but be cause they were lawyers. It may be that the practice of litigation has led them to long for some more har monious resolution of social difficulties; it may be that the study of technicalities made them seek after some application of a more simple, and, as it were, living law; or, again, that the penning of verbose Acts of Parliament, destined to remain a dead letter to the masses, made them feel the gulf that separates the statute-book from the nation that it nominally rules; or that a familiarity with the construction of commer cial partnerships and companies made them more and more aware of the total absence of legal facilities for the association of Labour. They found thus, in this movement, 0 work ready to their hand, for portions at least of which all previous experience seemed to have specially fitted them; and whatever may or may not be the ill-results, upon their present or future earnings, of the step they have taken, I believe they have no reason to repent of it. They are still labouring in their vocation, fulfilling their appointed duties, learning to frame, learning to apply, a most real and practical law. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Christianity The demand soon called forth a supply. Professor Marshall has made a gallant attempt to recast Political Economy, so that it shall be better accommodated to meet thepopular need of positive guidance. He has endeavoured to enlarge the scope Of Political Economy, by abandoning the view that it confines its attention to material wealth, and to the motive which it calls into play. In his inaugural lecture he showed that he was jealous of the fair fame of the Science, and determined to present it in a form in which it could no longer be stigmatized as selfish, but should concern itself with motives to action of many kinds, altruistic as well as self-regarding. As thus recast, it seems to give a doctrine} Of what is wise to do in regard to material things; and Professor Pigou, in his inaugural lecture,1' insisted on the practical possibilities of Economic Science; though be reserved the right to speak authoritatively to the Chosen few who can con jure with the mysteries Of statistics. He does not disclaim the power of giving positive guidance; he seems to think the scientific economist could really do it if only he had time enough. Unfortunately, the age is in a hurry, and wants to act, while academic economists are temporizing and weaving a web of pretentious words. It sets forth all the more important doctrines of the Bible in the clearest light possible. It is strictly unsectarian, and is adapted for responsive service in Churches, Prayer Meetings, Endeavor Societies, Home Reading, and for Christian workers everywhere. Its purpose is threefold - Indoctrination, Unity of Faith, and the Exaltation of God's Word above Human Creeds. While this book is a creed upon which all Christians may unite, yet, as such, it is not binding on any one, only in so far as it is a part of God's Word. The Bible is the only infallible rule of faith and practice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism of Christ: Or Attitude of Early Christians, Toward Modern Problems Like all other great world movements, Christianity was at first largely political and socialistic, and depended on this character for its propagation. The common people in the time of Christ, as at present in Paris and Berlin, were dissatisfied in their misery, and looked for some revolution to relieve them. The disaffection of poverty against wealth, of labor against capital, of commonalty against aristocracy, of subject against ruler, and of slave against master was general throughout the Roman Empire. The lower classes as a body, demanded deliverance from their wrongs and better chances in the over-crowded avenues to wealth and happiness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Socialism: A Lecture We commend those who, for the good of all, invest their wealth in the higher things of civil ization, as performing acts of social justice, but such gifts, however munificent, do not make atonement or reparation for wrongs perpetrated in the iniquitous acquisition of wealth. The blood of the oppressed toiler will continue to cry to Heaven for justice, notwithstanding the high plaudits with which these gifts are greeted. When the living wage is not made the first factor in determining the price of manufac tured articles, and in the sweat-shop the scale of wages is so low that our maidens have set before them the awful choice between hunger and dishonor, and in the factory young children are stunted in mind and body by excessive labor. It is time for the Church to aid in driving these things from the holy places of our civiliza tion, and to urge its members, who in corporate bodies and otherwise are served by labor, to keep themselves clear of guilt in these economic relations.
