Book excerpt: A new concept for monitoring the potential for damage accumulation in structural materials is presented. Briefly, the method proposed is to install a preflawed gage on a critical component and to monitor its flaw growth nondestructively. The relationship between this flaw size and the potential flaw in the structure is derived using linear elastic fracture mechanics principles. Experimental flaw growth data produced by an aircraft spectrum was used to demonstrate the validity of a degenerate case of this concept. A discussion is also presented to show how this method could be implemented in fulfillment of the Mil-Std-1530 requirement to track potential flaw growth.

Book excerpt: An analytical and experimental program was conducted to evaluate the crack growth gage concept for application as an individual aircraft tracking device. Three gage designs were evaluated. Volume I discusses the evaluation of two versions of a stepped thickness gage and a stepped width gage. Volume II discusses the evaluation of a side-grooved constant thickness gage. An analytical evaluation of the change in transfer function corresponding to gage design parameter changes was performed to determine the configuration of the gages to be tested. Initial spectrum tests were conducted on the first stepped gage design to determine the ranking ability of the gage. Then constant amplitude tests were conducted on the second stepped gage design. A modification of the gage was made to improve spectrum test response. The modified gage was subjected to both constant amplitude testing and spectrum testing. The analytically derived crack growth rates were compared to the test data. In general, the analysis predicted slightly higher growth rates than observed.

Book excerpt: The objective of this program was to determine the feasibility of the crack growth gage as a more direct method for monitoring potential crack growth damage in fatigue critical areas of F-4 aircraft structure. The major task consisted on mounting crack growth gages on a full-scale F-4C/D fatigue test article and collecting crack growth data from the gages at specified intervals. Two additional tasks were comprised of (1) conducting a gage qualification test program in accordance with MIL-STD-810C (Environmental Test Method) requirements, and (2) determining an appropriate method for collecting data from the gage. Inconsistencies in constant amplitude test results and bonding problems encountered on the F-4C/D full-scale fatigue test article prevented the MIL-STD-810C qualification tests from being started. Results of this investigation indicated that further research and development of the crack growth gage concept is required before the gage can be recommended as a fleetwide tracking device.

Book excerpt: The results of an experimental and analytical investigation on the use of a precracked coupon for monitoring the effect of service loads upon fatigue crack growth in a structure are discussed. The precracked coupon or "gage" is a simple device which provides a convenient means for determining the potential damage, that is, crack growth, in a structure since crack extension in the gage is a result of loads on the structure which cause the structural damage. Experimental results are reported for gages made from two aluminum alloys and having two types of crack geometries. These gages contained either a center crack or a single crack at the edge of a hole. The effect of load amplitude upon growth of the crack in the gage as a function of the crack growth in the structure was investigated. All tests were conducted under constant-amplitude cyclic load. The theoretical model is developed to predict the correlation between the growth of the cracks in the gage and in the structure. Two areas of major importance in the analysis are the load transfer from the structure through the ends of the crack gage and the crack-propagation law for the crack growth in the gage and in the structure. Comparison of the analyses and the experimental results is made.

Book excerpt: Analysis and Mechanics contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Fracture held at the University of Waterloo in Canada in June 1977. The conference provided a forum for discussing fracture mechanics and analysis involving a wide variety of materials, particularly large structures. Topics covered range from crack growth to dynamic processes and stress intensity factors, along with fracture in nonlinear systems. Comprised of 64 chapters, this volume begins by describing a numerical approach for modeling stable crack growth and fracture criteria. The reader is then introduced to the continuum theory of dislocations and its application to fracture mechanics; initiation of crack propagation in ductile structures; and finite element analysis of an impact test. Subsequent chapters focus on stress and crack-displacement intensity factors in elastodynamics; plastic fracture analysis of a cracked cylinder under displacement controlled loading; energy considerations in dynamic crack propagation and arrest; and the use of the J integral to measure the resistance of mild steel to slow stable crack growth. This book will be of interest to mechanical and structural engineers.

Book excerpt: Changes in the crack growth behavior of 7075-T651 aluminum specimens which has been exposed to temperatures between 150 degrees and 355 degrees F (66 deg and 179 deg C) were evaluated. Specimens were fatigue tested at room temperature under flight-by-flight loading conditions. Results from these tests were then compared with data from the baseline (as received) material. Exposure to 250 deg F (121 deg C) or more produced a definite increase in speciment life, apparently due to a decrease in crack growth rates.

Book excerpt: The results of a test program to evaluate the ability of a bonded on precracked coupon to monitor the growth of flaws in the basic structure are included. All testing utilized 7075-T651 aluminum from a single plate. Both constant thickness and stepped crack gages were evaluated. Evaluation of a wide range of sensitivity in crack gage crack growth response was made. Structure flaws of, (1) corner flaw at a hole, (2) through flaws at a hole and (3) center notch flaw were evaluated. The cyclic test loading included constant amplitude of two R ratios and three representative aircraft usage flight profiles. Strain gage instrumentation was used to measure structure stresses and load transferred into the crack gages. (Author).

Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth testing and analysis were conducted to evaluate the effects of initial flaw location and multiplicity on fatigue crack growth life and element failure sequence in multiple element, mechanically fastened metallic structure. The test program, which included 68 precracked structural specimens consisting of 26 joints and 42 stringer-reinforced panels, is described in detail. Stress intensity factor analyses and stress severity factor equations and the results of baseline static, fatigue, crack growth, and fracture tests are presented for use in making crack growth predictions for the structural specimens. Procedures are described for machining, precracking, assembling and testing the structural specimens. The test results and corresponding analytical results are presented and compared.

Book excerpt: This book consists of a collection of lectures prepared for a short course on "Fracture Mechanics Methodology" sponsored by the Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD), part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The course was organized jointly by Professor George C. Sih of the Institute of Fracture and Solid Mechanics at Lehigh University in the United States and Professor Luciano Faria from Centro de Mecanica e de Materiais das Universidade de Lisboa in Portugal. It was held in Lisbon from June 1 to 4, 1981. Dr. Robert Badaliance from the McDonnell Aircraft Company in St. Louis and Dr. Oscar Orringer from the Depart ment of Transportation in Cambridge are the other US lecturers while Professor Carlos Moura Branco from Portugal also lectured. The audience consisted of engineers from the Portuguese industry with a large portion from the aeronautical sector and others who are particularly interested to apply the fracture mechanics discipline for analyzing the integrity of structural components and fracture control methods. Particular. emphases were given to the fundamentals of fracture mechanics as applied to aircraft structures.
