Book excerpt: Teacher efficacy describes teachers’ beliefs in their ability to impact student achievement, regardless of external factors. The present study’s purpose was to determine factors that influence teacher efficacy such as color-blindness and pupil control ideology. The goals were to determine the following: If there was a relationship between color-blind beliefs and teacher efficacy, do color-blind racial attitudes moderate the relationship between pupil control ideology and teachers’ sense of efficacy, and can beliefs about student behavior and color-blindness predict levels of teacher efficacy? The Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale, Pupil Control Ideology Scale, and the Color-Blind Racial Attitudes Scale were used to answer the research questions. Study participants were 150 teachers from urban school districts in Texas. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between teachers’ sense of efficacy, pupil control ideology, and color-blind beliefs among urban schoolteachers. The quantitative results show that color-blindness is correlated to teacher efficacy and that pupil control ideology and color-blindness have some influence on teacher efficacy. The results also show that color-blindness does not moderate the relationship between teacher efficacy and pupil control ideology. The limitations of this study and recommendations for future research and training were provided.

Color-blindness implies color does not matter (Neville, Lilly, Duran, Lee, & Browne, 2000). Shifting student demographics in K-12 education and unchanging demographics of a predominately White, female teaching force create a need for better understanding the dynamics affecting teachers and their interaction with the students they teach. This correlational study utilized multiple regression analyses to answer the following research question: How accurately can racial color-blindness be predicted from the linear combination of age, years-of-experience, and political philosophy for K-12 teachers located in an urbanized school district in Northwest Georgia? The participating school district was an urbanized school district in Northwest Georgia, employing 425 certified teachers, counselors, and academic coaches. The demographics considered in this study were: age, years-of-experience, and political philosophy. Magnitude of color-blindness was determined by subjects’ total score on the Color Blind Racial Attitude Scale (CoBRAS; Neville et al., 2000). Multiple regression was used to examine the direction and strength of the linear relationships. There were no significant correlations identified between the predictor variables of age, years-of-teaching experience, and political philosophy and the criterion variable of Racial Color-Blindness. Rejection of the null hypothesis was not possible based on the results of this study. However, comparison of mean scores of the CoBRAS in the current study to that of Atwater (2007) found a striking difference between the two studies. This difference suggests that further research of regional influences on Racial Color-blindness is merited.

This is the book's most important claim: rather than exemplifying masculine strength, the sublime marks the transition to a system of power gendered as feminine and yet masks that transition because it fears the power it ostensibly accords to the feminine. This aesthetic is both an inheritance the Victorians receive from their romantic predecessors, and, more importantly, a broad historical phenomenon that questions the artificial boundaries between romantic and Victorian.

This study investigated affective, ideological, and cognitive correlates of antiracist behavior using the recently developed antiracist behavior inventory. The study used cluster analysis to form groups of Whites according to psychosocial costs of racism, color-blind racial ideology, system justification beliefs, and social dominance orientation, and then determine differences in antiracist behavior between clusters. Cluster analysis revealed three types of Whites labeled The Status Quo, The Moderate, and The Beginning Antiracist. Cluster #1, The Status Quo, demonstrated the highest levels of CBRI, SJT, and SDO and the lowest levels of PCRW while Cluster #3, The Beginning Antiracist type endorsed the lowest levels of CBRI, SJT, and SDO, and the highest levels of PCRW. Cluster #2, The Moderate, were about average for the cluster on all variables. Significant differences were found between clusters on antiracist behaviors in a direction consistent with the literature. The Status Quo endorsed the lowest levels of ARBI while The Beginning Antiracist type endorsed the highest levels of antiracism in this sample. Findings indicated significant gender difference between groups where women were over-represented in all three groups due to sampling bias. However, Cluster 3, The Beginning Antiracist type, was comprised of about equal number of males and females. No age differences were noted. While many studies in the Whiteness literature have explored college samples, this study intentionally recruited community members.
