Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the understandings that select athletic training educators (ATEs) hold about their teaching in the classroom and what factors influenced their selection of teaching methods. The three research questions that guided this study were: (a) how do select ATEs understand their own teaching, (b) what strategies do they frequently use, and (c) what factors influence their selection of teaching methods. The participants of this study were purposefully selected beginning with critical case sampling of ATEs who were leaders in the field of athletic training education, followed by the additional recruitment of ATEs through a snowball method. Seven ATEs ultimately agreed to participate. Data sources for this study included interviews and documents. Participants also videotaped a teaching lesson from one of their undergraduate athletic training classes to aid in their reflection on their teaching for the in-depth interview. The data was analyzed in an effort to find the essence of the phenomenon. This included the identification of overarching themes and constant comparison of participants throughout the process. Two main themes emerged from the data: (a) mindfulness of the ATEs' teaching practice and (b) genuine care for the success and development of their students. Each theme was further broken down into subthemes. The theme of mindfulness of the participants' teaching practice was demonstrated through the following four subthemes: (a) their personal evolution as ATEs, (b) balance of student learning and engagement with required content, (c) importance of critical thinking, and (d) content being applicable/useful/relevant. The theme genuine care for the success and development of their students was illustrated through the following four subthemes: (a) student focused teaching, (b) development of skills other than academic, (c) today's students, and (d) student success and good certified athletic trainers. Further review of the findings and themes revealed the larger concept, teaching as an essential vehicle to advance the profession of athletic training by way of instilling foundational behaviors in students.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to describe the educational backgrounds and teaching styles of athletic training educators and to see if a relationship existed between educational backgrounds and teaching styles. An electronic survey was e-mailed to 338 Program Directors of CAAHEP accredited undergraduate and graduate athletic training education programs. The survey was also posted on the athletic training educator's listserv to recruit more participants. The survey contained questions regarding demographics and educational history, as well as the Teaching Styles Inventory (Grasha, 2002). A total of 198 athletic training educators responded to the survey, and 174 filled out the survey in its entirety. An overwhelming majority of the participants were White (98%) and about 50% were male or female. Over half of the participants were program directors (59%) and 38% were at the assistant professor rank. Thirty-one percent were currently employed at a liberal arts institution. Most were employed in a College of Education (36%), working in a department of health, physical education, and recreation (25%). These athletic training educators had diverse educational backgrounds. A Bachelor of Science degree had been awarded to 78% of the respondents, and 33% of the Bachelor's degrees were in physical education. Forty-five percent did not have a minor degree. At the master's level, most of the degrees that had been awarded were Master's of Science (63%) and 23% were in athletic training/sports medicine. Most of the participants did not hold a post-graduate level degree (37%). Of those with a post-graduate degree, 27% held a Doctorate of Philosophy. Nine percent were in curriculum and instruction. On average, athletic training educators had been teaching for 8 years, had completed 8 courses in pedagogy, and had attended 8 workshops that were based on improving pedagogical practices. The predominant teaching style among athletic training educators was personal model (50%). Surprisingly, none of the participants had a delegator teaching style as their predominant style. The results of the MANOVA suggested that a significant relationship did not exist between educational backgrounds and teaching styles among these athletic training educators.

Findings suggested ATEs with a formalized pedagogic focused educational background, have increasedknowledge of instructional effectiveness, and overall had higher student evaluation scores. Considering the future directions of athletictraining, ATEs knowledge and application of effective didactic strategies should be further investigated.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The current study was designed to investigate student learning styles, learning processes and learning flexibility in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical learning environments. A mixed methodological approach was used. Data were collected using the KLSI 4.0, and semistructured interviews. Qualitative data were analyzed using an inductive analysis approach and KLSI 4.0 data were analyzed using a cluster analysis. Upon analysis, three learning styles were identified in the classroom environment; experiencing, reflecting, and analyzing. Four learning process profiles (LPP) were identified along with the behaviors of note taking, listening, and connecting to real world learning behaviors. The experiencing, reflecting, and analyzing learning styles were identified in the lab, along with four LPP and watching, practicing, and communicating learning behaviors. The experiencing, reflecting, and balancing learning styles were identified in the clinical environment, with five LPP and watching, practicing and communicating learning behaviors. Learning flexibility was found to be moderately high in all environments; (M = 0.716, SD = 0.18), laboratory (M = 0.768, SD = 0.16), and clinic (M = 0.735, SD = 0.16).

Book excerpt: "Athletic trainers are often a significant source of support for athletes coping with psychosocial issues, both in terms of directly assisting the athlete through psychosocial interventions (e.g., goal setting, motivations) and offering access to other resources (i.e., mental health counseling referrals), as well as providing various types of social support (Barefield & McCallister, 1997; Robbins & Rosenfeld, 2001; Tracey, 2008). Moreover, athletic training education includes a specific content area, Psychosocial Strategies and Referral, to prepare students to meet the athletes' needs. Athletic trainers (ATs) have expressed an interest in, and increasing acceptance of, the use of psychological skills with athletes who are injured (Clement, Granquist & Arvenin-Barrow, 2013; Cramer Roh & Perna, 2000; Hamson-Utley, Martin & Walters, 2008; Larson, Starky & Zaichowsky, 1996). However, ATs often feel underprepared to assist athletes through the use of psychological skills (Stiller-Ostrowski & Ostrowski, 2009; Moulton, Molstad, & Turner, 1997; Misasi, Davis, Morin, & Stockman, 1996). This study aims to further understand the gap between required athletic training education and feelings of lack of preparedness on behalf of athletic training students. To that end, athletic training Program Directors, Preceptors, and Students were surveyed regarding five specific psychosocial competencies. It was found that while there was no difference in how Program Directors value the selected competencies, there was differentiation among both Preceptors and Students. Students value, feel prepared to use, and are more likely to use competencies PS6, PS7 and PS8, but not PS9 or PS10. Preceptors also valued PS9 and PS10 the least. For Preceptors, modeling the behavior was the strongest predictor of competency value. Multiple regressions were run to determine predictors of student values, preparedness, and likelihood of use. Results were inconsistent across competencies, however where the competency is taught and the value of the Program Director for that competency emerged the most often as significant predictors. Lastly, a regression was run to predict students' likelihood of using a competency from value and preparedness. Across all competencies, value and preparedness were significantly predictive of likelihood of use, and in only one competency was value the only predictor. Results indicate that more research is necessary to understand student values of competencies as well as the influence of clinical instructors on educational experiences.
