Download or read book Working with Pregnant and Parenting Teenage Clients written by Neil Cervera and published by Families International. This book was released on 1989 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year in the United States, approximately one million adolescents become pregnant. This guide, the seventh in a series of resource guides for human service professionals, features a collection of articles that explores and explains the different facets of teenage pregnancy, while offering strategies for intervention. The volume begins with an analysis of the family's and teenager's concerns during an unmarried pregnancy, followed by an analysis of adolescent development issues and changes that occur during a teenage pregnancy. Next, the guide presents a case management approach to social services delivery, which includes three articles on child abuse and neglect. The familial and cultural perspectives are discussed in the next section, where issues such as poverty, school attrition, and ethnicity are addressed, along with the influence these areas have on the delivery of services to pregnant teenagers. After offering insights on the father's experience in adolescent pregnancy, the guide presents a model of interagency collaboration, and supplies tips on a cognitive behavior intervention approach which can help youngsters face tough decisions. The book closes with an annotated bibliography, and short descriptions of school-based programs aimed at helping adolescents. (RJM)

Book Synopsis The Ghetto Underclass by : William J. Wilson
Download or read book The Ghetto Underclass written by William J. Wilson and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1993-08-17 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sponsored by the American Academy of Political and Social Science William Julius Wilson is a leader in the study of the urban underclass. His controversial thesis states that the fragmentation of the black community along class lines has resulted in a group of blacks who have left the inner city for middle-class suburban life, leaving behind the ghetto underclass of very disadvantaged poor. This thesis has had an enormous impact on the study of urban life, race, and society. Originally published as a special issue of the Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, The Ghetto Underclass addresses questions from theoretical, empirical, and policy perspectives. Wilson and other leading social scientists cover demographic and industrial transitions, family patterns, sexual behavior, immigration, and homelessness of the urban underclass. Wilson's introduction updates recent work on this topic since publication of the Annals issue. The Ghetto Underclass should be read by all students and professionals of urban studies, ethnic studies, sociology, policy studies, political science, social work, social welfare, and education.

Book excerpt: The Subcommittee on Human Resources and Intergovernmental Relations of the House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform and Oversight met to consider the causes of and solutions to teen pregnancy and the role of community organizations in prevention efforts. Opening remarks by Representative Christopher Shays were followed by statements by a number of people with expertise in teen pregnancy prevention, beginning with the statement of Representative Edolphus Towns, which emphasizes that in many cases the fathers of the babies of teenage girls are much older than the mothers. Statements of Representatives Nancy Johnson and Eva M. Clayton further defined the problem and emphasized that solutions must be community based. Remarks and a panel discussion were presented by: (1) Henry W. Foster, Jr., Senior Advisor to the President; (2) Kristin A. Moore, from the National Campaign To Prevent Teen Pregnancy; (3) Pat Funderburk Ware, former director of the Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Programs; and (4) Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. The panel discussion of these representatives of national initiatives was followed by a panel discussion of representatives from Best Friends, a program for girls and young women, and the Institute for Responsible Fatherhood and Family Revitalization. The transcribed comments and prepared statements of members of both panels are supplemented by letters, statements, and other documents submitted for the record. Panelists and Congress members were in general agreement that community-based approaches are needed to address the problems of teen pregnancy and that the role of fathers must be strengthened. (SLD)

Download or read book Puerto Ricans in the United States written by Maria E. Perez y Gonzalez and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-08-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puerto Ricans in the United States begins by presenting Puerto Rico—the land, the people, and the culture. The island's invasion by U.S. forces in 1898 set the stage for our intertwined relationship to the present day. Pérez y González brings to life important historical events leading to immigration to the United States, particularly to the large northeastern cities, such as New York. The narrative highlights Puerto Ricans' adjustment and adaptation in this country through the media, institutions, language, and culture. A wealth of information is given on socioeconomic status, including demographics, employment, education opportunities, and poverty and public assistance. The discussions on the struggles of this group for affordable housing, issues of women and children, particular obstacles to obtaining appropriate health care, including the epidemic of AIDS, and race relations are especially insightful. The final chapter on Puerto Ricans' impact on U.S. society highlights their positive contributions in a wide range of fields.
