Book excerpt: Gauss famously referred to mathematics as the “queen of the sciences” and to number theory as the “queen of mathematics”. This book is an introduction to algebraic number theory, meaning the study of arithmetic in finite extensions of the rational number field Q . Originating in the work of Gauss, the foundations of modern algebraic number theory are due to Dirichlet, Dedekind, Kronecker, Kummer, and others. This book lays out basic results, including the three “fundamental theorems”: unique factorization of ideals, finiteness of the class number, and Dirichlet's unit theorem. While these theorems are by now quite classical, both the text and the exercises allude frequently to more recent developments. In addition to traversing the main highways, the book reveals some remarkable vistas by exploring scenic side roads. Several topics appear that are not present in the usual introductory texts. One example is the inclusion of an extensive discussion of the theory of elasticity, which provides a precise way of measuring the failure of unique factorization. The book is based on the author's notes from a course delivered at the University of Georgia; pains have been taken to preserve the conversational style of the original lectures.

Book excerpt: ALGEBRAIC NUMBER THEORY provides concisely both the fundamental and profound theory, starting from the succinct ideal theory (Chapters 1-3), turning then to valuation theory and local completion field (Chapters 4-5) which is the base of modern approach. After specific discussions on class numbers, units, quadratic and cyclotomic fields, and analytical theory (Chapters 6-8), the important Class Field Theory (Chapter 9) is expounded, and algebraic function field (Chapter 10) is sketched. This book is based on the study and lectures of the author at several universities.

Book excerpt: This book offers the basics of algebraic number theory for students and others who need an introduction and do not have the time to wade through the voluminous textbooks available. It is suitable for an independent study or as a textbook for a first course on the topic. The author presents the topic here by first offering a brief introduction to number theory and a review of the prerequisite material, then presents the basic theory of algebraic numbers. The treatment of the subject is classical but the newer approach discussed at the end provides a broader theory to include the arithmetic of algebraic curves over finite fields, and even suggests a theory for studying higher dimensional varieties over finite fields. It leads naturally to the Weil conjecture and some delicate questions in algebraic geometry. About the Author Dr. J. S. Chahal is a professor of mathematics at Brigham Young University. He received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and after spending a couple of years at the University of Wisconsin as a post doc, he joined Brigham Young University as an assistant professor and has been there ever since. He specializes and has published several papers in number theory. For hobbies, he likes to travel and hike. His book, Fundamentals of Linear Algebra, is also published by CRC Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook offers a unique exploration of analytic number theory that is focused on explicit and realistic numerical bounds. By giving precise proofs in simplified settings, the author strategically builds practical tools and insights for exploring the behavior of arithmetical functions. An active learning style is encouraged across nearly three hundred exercises, making this an indispensable resource for both students and instructors. Designed to allow readers several different pathways to progress from basic notions to active areas of research, the book begins with a study of arithmetic functions and notions of arithmetical interest. From here, several guided “walks” invite readers to continue, offering explorations along three broad themes: the convolution method, the Levin–Faĭnleĭb theorem, and the Mellin transform. Having followed any one of the walks, readers will arrive at “higher ground”, where they will find opportunities for extensions and applications, such as the Selberg formula, Brun’s sieve, and the Large Sieve Inequality. Methodology is emphasized throughout, with frequent opportunities to explore numerically using computer algebra packages Pari/GP and Sage. Excursions in Multiplicative Number Theory is ideal for graduate students and upper-level undergraduate students who are familiar with the fundamentals of analytic number theory. It will also appeal to researchers in mathematics and engineering interested in experimental techniques in this active area.

On the one hand, it gives a comprehensive introduction to constructive algebraic number theory, and is therefore especially suited as a textbook for a course on that subject. On the other hand many parts go beyond an introduction an make the user familliar with recent research in the field. For experimental number theoreticians new methods are developed and new results are obtained which are of great importance for them. Both computer scientists interested in higher arithmetic and those teaching algebraic number theory will find the book of value.

Book excerpt: First printed in 1967, this book has been essential reading for aspiring algebraic number theorists for more than forty years. It contains the lecture notes from an instructional conference held in Brighton in 1965, which was a milestone event that introduced class field theory as a standard tool of mathematics. There are landmark contributions from Serre and Tate. The book is a standard text for taught courses in algebraic number theory. This Second Edition includes a valuable list of errata compiled by mathematicians who have read and used the text over the years.
