Book Synopsis Molecular Systematics of Plants II by : Pamela Soltis
Download or read book Molecular Systematics of Plants II written by Pamela Soltis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the five years since the publication of Molecular Systematics of Plants, the field of molecular systematics has advanced at an astonishing pace. This period has been marked by a volume of new empirical data and advances in theoretical and analytical issues related to DNA. Comparative DNA sequencing, facilitated by the amplification of DNA via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), has become the tool of choice for molecular systematics. As a result, large portions of the Molecular Systematics of Plants have become outdated. Molecular Systematics of Plants II summarizes these recent achievements in plant molecular systematics. Like its predecessor, this completely revised work illustrates the potential of DNA markers for addressing a wide variety of phylogenetic and evolutionary questions. The volume provides guidance in choosing appropriate techniques, as well as appropriate genes for sequencing, for given levels of systematic inquiry. More than a review of techniques and previous work, Molecular Systematics of Plants II provides a stimulus for developing future research in this rapidly evolving field. Molecular Systematics of Plants II is not only written for systematists (faculty, graduate students, and researchers), but also for evolutionary biologists, botanists, and paleobotanists interested in reviewing current theory and practice in plant molecular systematics.

Book Synopsis Flora of the Sydney Region by : Belinda Jane Pellow
Download or read book Flora of the Sydney Region written by Belinda Jane Pellow and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth edition Flora of the Sydney Region is the definitive technical guide to the identification of wild plants in one of the world's botanical heartlands. The Flora covers an area of coastal New South Wales stretching from Newcastle to Nowra and west to Lithgow. This comprehensive treatment contains diagnostic keys and descriptions that make it possible for the reader to identify any of the 3,000 indigenous or naturalised plant species found in this botanically diverse region. The identification keys efficiently guide the reader through those plant characteristics necessary to arrive at the correct scientific name. The identification process is further aided by a glossary and an extensive index of scientific and common plant names. Species descriptions include habitat details and flowering times. An instructive introduction provides support for the novice botanist. When first published in 1963, Flora of the Sydney Region was the only complete regional Flora in Australia. This fully revised edition of the Flora incorporates the wealth of botanical research which has taken place since the publication of the fourth edition in 1994. As a trusty field guide and authoritative desktop reference, it will be a constant companion to environmental consultants, amateur and professional botanists, ecologists, bushwalkers, bush regenerators and teaching institutions.

Book Synopsis New England Wild Flower Society's Flora Novae Angliae by : Arthur Haines
Download or read book New England Wild Flower Society's Flora Novae Angliae written by Arthur Haines and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable, fully updated guide for everyone interested in identifying, studying, or conserving the flora of New England This comprehensive manual offers accurate, up-to-date, and clear information for identifying New England's remarkable array of tracheophytes (vascular plants, excluding mosses). With fully researched entries on some 3,500 native and nonnative species, the book is the first in decades to provide a complete and correct botanical reference for the region's noncultivated plants. The volume includes many new species not documented in New England before, while also excluding many species that have erroneously appeared in earlier manuals. Focusing on the taxonomy and distribution of New England plants, the manual is largely dedicated to identification keys and to species entries that provide scientific name, origin, regional conservation ranking, common name, synonyms, distribution, ecology, and other miscellaneous items of interest. Nearly one-third of the entries are accompanied by helpful black-and-white line illustrations. Additional special features: Precise distribution information, accurate to the state level Details on unusual plant groups not included in other sources Reliable and versatile keys for identification Tips on recognizing hybrid plants in the field A companion interactive teaching Web site (under development) Comprehensive glossary
Book Synopsis Garden Plants Taxonomy by : Bijan Dehgan
Download or read book Garden Plants Taxonomy written by Bijan Dehgan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-05 with total page 1526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horticulture has remained far behind in understanding of botanical principles. Recent phylogenetic (DNA-based) reorganization of higher plants has revolutionized taxonomic treatments of all biological entities, even when morphology does not completely agree with their organization. This book is an example of applying principals of botanical phylogenetic taxonomy to assemble genera, species, and cultivars of 200 vascular plant families of ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms that are cultivated for enhancement of human living space; homes, gardens, and parks. The emphases are on cultivated species but examples of some plants are often shown in the wild and in landscapes. In providing descriptions, it is assumed that students and other interested individuals have no background in general botany (plant characteristics), or nomenclature. Fundamental features of all plant groups discussed are fully illustrated by original watercolor drawings or photographs. Discussion of the families is grounded on recent botanical phylogenetic treatments, which is based on common ancestry (monophyly). Of course, phylogenetic taxonomy is not a new concept, and was originally based on morphological characteristics; it is the DNA-based phylogeny that has revolutionized modern biological classifications. In practical terms, this book represents the horticultural treatment that corresponds to phylogenetic-based botanical taxonomy, to which is added cultigens and cultivated genera and species. Hence, the harmony between horticultural and botanical taxonomy. This book covers phylogenetic-based taxonomy of Angiosperms (Eudicots). A companion volume covers Ferns, Gymnosperms, and Angiosperms (Monocots).
