Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Contribution to the Geologic History of the Floridian Plateau This paper is the outgrowth of my association with two organiza tions, the United States Geological Survey and the Carnegie Institution of Washington. As Geologist in charge of Coastal Plain Investiga tions of the former organization, I have had unusual opportunities to familiarize myself with the geology of Florida, supplementing my previous field work in the State by several additional trips. I super vised and participated in the preparation of a report on the stratigraphic geology and a geologic map of the State, done in cooperation between the United States Geological Survey and the Florida State Survey, by Messrs. George Charlton Matson, Frederick G. Clapp, and Samuel San ford. I have therefore had at my disposal not only the results of my personal work for the Geological Survey, but also those of Messrs. Matson, Clapp, and Sanford. The information derived from my association with the United States Geological Survey is here utilized with the permission of the Director of that Bureau, and my hearty thanks are extended to him for the privilege. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geological History of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts: A Popular Account of Its Rocks and Origin The purpose of this little book is to present, in popular form, the salient points in the geological history of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts. The beautiful valley and its charming boundary hills may in truth be said to be a geologist's paradise. In regard to variety of geological phenomena, few districts of equal size in North America surpass it. To most of its residents the marvelous story of the Connecticut Valley and adjacent hills as recorded in nature's book of the rocks is unknown. Beginning with the oldest decipherable records and leading up to the present time, it is my pleasure, in the following pages, to explain to the layman the principal known events in the wonderful geological history of the Connecticut Valley, including the origin of the valley as we see it today. The use of technical and unusual terms has been reduced to a minimum compatible with a reasonable understanding of the subject. Each of the few technical terms is explained where first used in the text. Since so many of the great principles of earth science (geology) are wonderfully illustrated in the Connecticut Valley and the adjacent highlands, it is my hope that this book may furnish the basis and inspiration to many people of the region for understanding and interpreting not only the principal records of the rocks, but also the important processes and laws of the science of geology illustrated by these records. To aid in the accomplishment of this purpose, simplified, largely nontechnical, scientific discussions are entered into. In order to make the conclusions more impressive and realistic actual easily accessible localities, carefully selected out of my field experience, are cited to illustrate each stage in the tremendously long history of the region. I am not satisfied to say to the reader, for example, long ages ago, according to geologists, the sea spread over central western Massachusetts. My purpose is to be much more precise than that, and to give the reader at least some of the geological reasoning upon which such conclusions are based. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Geology of the Henry Mountains The manuscript of the first edition was finished in the year 1877. It was at once put in type, and in anticipation Of a speedy issue the current year was marked on the imprint. There were, however, serious delays in the preparation of the illustrations, and it was not until 1879 that the volume was bound and distributed. Since the preparation of the manuscript the literature of the subject has been enriched by the publication of numerous descriptions of igneous mountains of the Plateau Province and of the Great Plains, and especially by important contributions to the physics Of volcan ism, in the light of which the author would be glad to give his work a full revision. The necessary time is not, however, at his disposal, and he has contented himself with a few verbal amendments and the addition of an appendix. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North American Geologic Formation Names: Bibliography, Synonymy, and Distribution No attempt has been made to indicate the synonymy or taxonomic value of any formation except as it was given by the author of the reference cited. It is intended to refer the investigator to the litera ture of any North American geologic formation name, and he must exercise his own judgment as to its value and standing as a formation name. The work of preparing this bulletin has been in progress for nearly three years. It has been interrupted from time to time by other office and field work of the author. During the winter of 1899 - 1900 it became evident that this work must be completed at once for the use of members of the United States Geological Survey in assigning names to the formations which were being delineated on the folios forming the Geologic Atlas of the United States. The Director Of the Survey requested the following geologists to assist in completing the work: Messrs. M. R. Campbell, N. H. Darton, J. S. Diller, G. H. Girty, C. W. Hayes, F. H. Knowlton, F. L. Ransome, G. O. Smith, A. C. Spencer, T. W. Stanton, J. A. Tatf, T. W. Vaughan, and David White. The literature that then remained to be examined was apportioned among these gentlemen, and since that time the material has been brought down to January 1, 1901, by the author. The methods of preparing this material, previously adopted, were followed with as much uniformity as was possible, and the author, as well as geologists in general, is greatly indebted to these gentlemen who assisted in bringing the work to an early completion. While the survey, and the report in tout ensemble, conform to the conception which he formed when he entered upon the work, yet he is conscious of its numerous defects. And numerous lines of geological research which have not been entered upon. He can, therefore, with strengthened emphasis, repeat the following from the preface Of volume I of this report.
