Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dry fiber reinforcements used in structural composites consist of arrangements of yarns themselves consisting of alignments of thousands of fibers. Due to the complex multi-scale architecture and low cohesion between their constituents, they exhibit tensile properties several orders of magnitude higher than the bending ones. This work aims at studying the tensile and bending behaviors of fibrous materials, taking into account their meso-scale architecture, both experimentally and analytically. Woven fabrics, owing a periodic and corrugated geometry of their inter-weaved yarns, are under consideration. A new methodology has been developed for the modeling of the stress-strain state of corrugated structures (with fastly variable parameters) re-projecting applied forces, moments, and displacements on the neutral axis of the structure. The exact solutions for the problems about tension and bending of a beam have been obtained. In parallel, fabrics and constituting yarns have been tested on a bending set-up based on the cantilever principle. Tensile tests have also been performed on yarns extracted from the considered fabrics. Tensile and bending properties of yarns have been identified from tests coupling image analysis and inverse method. In general, the experimental results have demonstrated the link between the structure with corrugated constituents and its mechanical response to loadings. Also, they have justified the applicability of the multi-scale homogenization method for the prediction of effective properties. Finally, the approach permits to set and to efficiently solve the problem of the optimal design of fibrous materials from the crimped constituents geometry.

Book excerpt: Fabric mechanics are fundamental to the way textiles are designed, tested and manufactured and underpin the way woven fabrics are used in the modern world. With fully comprehensive coverage of all aspects of fabric anisotropy, stress-strain relationships and fabric drape modelling and testing, structure and mechanics of woven fabrics, discusses and exemplifies all major aspects of fabric mechanics and their relevance to every stage of the contemporary textile industry. ?? After a general introduction illustrating the role and study of woven fabric mechanics, the first group of chapters examines the structural, tensile, bending and shear properties of woven fabrics. Sections cover the general behaviour of these properties, how they are modelled and their anisotropy. Drape deformation modelling is covered extensively, one chapter detailing theory and a second, computation and simulation. The properties of fabrics with seams and fabric complex deformation analysis and simulation are also detailed. ?? Structure and mechanics of woven fabrics is an essential reference for all textile academics, students, researchers, technicians, engineers and technologists, covering all areas of textile material applications, from composites and geotextiles, to medical textiles and biotextiles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing use of polymer composites is leading to increasing demand for fractographic expertise. Fractography is the study of fracture surface morphologies and it gives an insight into damage and failure mechanisms, underpinning the development of physically-based failure criteria. In composites research it provides a crucial link between predictive models and experimental observations. Finally, it is vital for post-mortem analysis of failed or crashed polymer composite components, the findings of which can be used to optimise future designs.Failure analysis and fractography of polymer composites covers the following topics: methodology and tools for failure analysis; fibre-dominated failures; delamination-dominated failures; fatigue failures; the influence of fibre architecture on failure; types of defect and damage; case studies of failures due to overload and design deficiencies; case studies of failures due to material and manufacturing defects; and case studies of failures due to in-service factors. With its distinguished author, Failure analysis and fractography of polymer composites is a standard reference text for researchers working on damage and failure mechanisms in composites, engineers characterising manufacturing and in-service defects in composite structures, and investigators undertaking post-mortem failure analysis of components. The book is aimed at both academic and industrial users, specifically final year and postgraduate engineering and materials students researching composites and industry designers and engineers in aerospace, civil, marine, power and transport applications. - Examines the study of fracture surface morphologies in uderstanding composite structural behaviour - Discusses composites research and post-modern analysis of failed or crashed polymer composite components - Provides an overview of damage mechanisms, types of defect and failure criteria

Book excerpt: Composite materials have aroused a great interest over the last few decades, as proven by the huge number of scientific papers and industrial progress. The increase in the use of composite structures in different engineering practices justify the present international meeting where researches from every part of the globe can share and discuss the recent advancements regarding the use of structural components within advanced applications such as buckling, vibrations, repair, reinforcements, concrete, composite laminated materials and more recent metamaterials. Studies about composite structures are truly multidisciplinary and the given contributions can help other researches and professional engineers in their own field. This Conference is suitable as a reference for engineers and scientists working in the professional field, in the industry and the academia and it gives the possibility to share recent advancements in different engineering practices to the outside world. This book aims to collect selected plenary and key-note lectures of this International Conference. For this reason, the establishment of this 20th edition of International Conference on Composite Structures has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the previous editions. ICCS wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures, sandwich panels, nanotechnology, bio-composites, delamination and fracture, experimental methods, manufacturing and other countless topics that have filled many sessions during this conference. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Paris (France), selected plenary and key-note lectures have been collected in the present book.
