Book Synopsis Goal-based Decision Making by : Stephen Slade
Download or read book Goal-based Decision Making written by Stephen Slade and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a goal-based model of decision making in which the relative priorities of goals drive the decision process -- a psychological alternative to traditional decision analysis. Building on the work of Schank and Abelson, the author uses goals as the basis for a model of interpersonal relations which permits decisions to incorporate personal and adopted goals in a uniform manner. The theory is modelled on the VOTE computer program which simulates Congressional roll-call voting decisions. The VOTE program expands traditional decision making and simulation models by providing not only a choice, but also a natural language explanation, in either English or French. It simulates real members of Congress voting on real bills, and producing reasonable explanations. The program is consistent with much of the descriptive political science literature on Congressional decision making and provides an explicit model of political issues, relationships, and strategies that converge in voting behavior. In developing the VOTE program, the author draws on his own practical experience in politics from four presidential campaigns and the White House. Given the underlying psychological basis of the program, VOTE can be extended to other decision making domains different from politics. Another use for the program is to simulate business decisions such as securities analysis, as well as mundane decision making such as choosing a college or deciding whether to get a Mohawk haircut.
Book Synopsis The Lawgivers' Struggle by : David Trachtenberg
Download or read book The Lawgivers' Struggle written by David Trachtenberg and published by . This book was released on 2020-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Lawgivers' Struggle explains how the U.S. Congress exercises its constitutional authorities to formulate and shape American national security policy, sometimes in support of administration priorities and sometimes in opposition to them. Drawing on the author's experiences as a congressional staffer working for the House Armed Services Committee, it describes the processes that Congress uses and the tools it has as its disposal to wield influence in national security decisions. The book illuminates the legislative process, explaining the "how" and "why" of congressional decision making. It describes the dynamic that characterizes the relationship between the executive and legislative branches of government and the historical origins of the power struggle between the branches that continues to this day. The book serves as a valuable resource for students, government professionals, and everyday American citizens who wish to better understand how their government works"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many areas of study within Political Science, the influence of constituency on congressional voting is often assumed, but not often demonstrated empirically. Some studies claim constituency has a strong impact; others claim is it nonexistent. In an attempt to find an overall pattern in the literature, I examine numerous studies of congressional decision-making. Specifically I conduct a meta-analysis of 31 studies of constituency influence on congressional voting. I introduce theoretical arguments concerning the impact of constituency, ideology, and party identification on the voting decisions made by members of Congress. I introduce the concept of meta-analysis and describe the specific steps taken in conducting this analysis of congressional voting. The results indicate that constituency influence is a significant predictor of congressional voting, but that ideology and party identification demonstrate a stronger effect than constituency.

Topics added or expanded upon in this edition include congressional rules changes and reorganization, the House speakership, and the leverage of special interest groups. Analysis in each chapter moves between federal and state entities and illustrates how legislative institutions and practices are shaped to reflect the interests and preferences of the legislators themselves.
