Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Computer Oriented Single-Fingerprint Identification System A procedure is described ior computing a set of numerical descriptors that identify a single fingerprint. The procedure starts with the X and Y coordinates and the individual directions of the minutiae (ridge endings and bifurcations) of a fingerprint impression. Sets of descriptors are computed corresponding to groups or constellations of these minutiae. Descriptors corresponding to various fingerprint impressions are stored on mag netic tapeo A fragment of a fingerprint impression such as occurs in a latent fingerprint may also be used. Preliminary experimental results suggest that this procedure might be suitable as a basis for a single-fingerprint classification system.(Author).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Semi-Automated Single Fingerprint Identification System A system is described in which a fingerprint is manually coded by tracing certain ridges and noting events such as ridge endings and ridge beginnings. This code is sent by teleprinter to a central file where a computer identifies the fingerprint by comparing the code with codes previously entered in the file. The scheme for comparing codes is given along with some preliminary test results using typical fingerprints. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Automated Fingerprint Identification This paper follows a previous paper 1' that describes a procedure for matching fingerprint impressions by computer using two types of minutiae: ridge endings and bifurcations. With a fingerprint impression in the first quadrant, data is obtained by reading the X coordinate, Y coordinate, and the angle 0 which the minutia direction makes with the X axis for each minutia in the print. When the data is taken manually, 0 is measured in degrees and X and Y are measured in units of one tenth millimeter on an actual fingerprint or a millimeter on a ten-fold enlargement of the print. There are about 80 minutiae in an average rolled fingerprint. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matching Fingerprints by Computer A procedure is described for determining whether two fingerprint impressions were made by the same finger. The procedure uses the X and Y coordinates and the individual directions of the minutiae (ridge endings and bifurcations). The identity of two impressions is established by matching a constellation or group of minutiae in one impression with a corresponding con stellation in the other impression in terms of the relative distances and relative angles of the minutiae. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easy-to-understand synopsis of identification systems, presenting in simple language the process of fingerprint identification, from the initial capture of a set of finger images, to the production of a Rapsheet. No other single work exists which reviews this important identification process from beginning to end. We examine the identification process for latent (crime scene) prints and how they are identified with these systems. While the primary focus is automated fingerprint identifications, the book also touches on the emergence and use of fingerprints in other biometric systems. Criminal justice administrators, policy makers, and students of forensic science and criminal justice will find a reference to the known limitations and advantages of these systems. This book provides information as to the critical and continual need for properly trained individuals as well as an understanding of the direct and indirect costs associated with maintaining these systems. An understanding of the entire system and what it means will prove invaluable. Why are there missed identifications? Why are identifications made on one database that are not made on another database? Key terms and issues are included, and well as suggestions for improving the overall number of identifications. The book will go beyond process and also discuss issues such as interoperability, management strategies for large databases, contract development, lights out verification and several other issues which impact automated identifications. - The first comprehensive title on this subject area - Outlines in detail the entire process of fingerprint gathering and identity verification - The future of AFIS will is discussed, including national standards in developing multi-agency cooperation/interoperability (U.S.) in addition to the use of AFIS identification world-wide.

Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.

Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive study of different tools and techniques available to perform network forensics. Also, various aspects of network forensics are reviewed as well as related technologies and their limitations. This helps security practitioners and researchers in better understanding of the problem, current solution space, and future research scope to detect and investigate various network intrusions against such attacks efficiently. Forensic computing is rapidly gaining importance since the amount of crime involving digital systems is steadily increasing. Furthermore, the area is still underdeveloped and poses many technical and legal challenges. The rapid development of the Internet over the past decade appeared to have facilitated an increase in the incidents of online attacks. There are many reasons which are motivating the attackers to be fearless in carrying out the attacks. For example, the speed with which an attack can be carried out, the anonymity provided by the medium, nature of medium where digital information is stolen without actually removing it, increased availability of potential victims and the global impact of the attacks are some of the aspects. Forensic analysis is performed at two different levels: Computer Forensics and Network Forensics. Computer forensics deals with the collection and analysis of data from computer systems, networks, communication streams and storage media in a manner admissible in a court of law. Network forensics deals with the capture, recording or analysis of network events in order to discover evidential information about the source of security attacks in a court of law. Network forensics is not another term for network security. It is an extended phase of network security as the data for forensic analysis are collected from security products like firewalls and intrusion detection systems. The results of this data analysis are utilized for investigating the attacks. Network forensics generally refers to the collection and analysis of network data such as network traffic, firewall logs, IDS logs, etc. Technically, it is a member of the already-existing and expanding the field of digital forensics. Analogously, network forensics is defined as "The use of scientifically proved techniques to collect, fuses, identifies, examine, correlate, analyze, and document digital evidence from multiple, actively processing and transmitting digital sources for the purpose of uncovering facts related to the planned intent, or measured success of unauthorized activities meant to disrupt, corrupt, and or compromise system components as well as providing information to assist in response to or recovery from these activities." Network forensics plays a significant role in the security of today’s organizations. On the one hand, it helps to learn the details of external attacks ensuring similar future attacks are thwarted. Additionally, network forensics is essential for investigating insiders’ abuses that constitute the second costliest type of attack within organizations. Finally, law enforcement requires network forensics for crimes in which a computer or digital system is either being the target of a crime or being used as a tool in carrying a crime. Network security protects the system against attack while network forensics focuses on recording evidence of the attack. Network security products are generalized and look for possible harmful behaviors. This monitoring is a continuous process and is performed all through the day. However, network forensics involves post mortem investigation of the attack and is initiated after crime notification. There are many tools which assist in capturing data transferred over the networks so that an attack or the malicious intent of the intrusions may be investigated. Similarly, various network forensic frameworks are proposed in the literature.
