Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of this Concordance to the Syriac New Testament (Peshitta) is a landmark in Syriac scholarship. It fills a lacuna in the field which has long been felt by Syriac scholars. George Kirazs new computer-generated Concordance (in vocalized serto script) is based on the standard British and Foreign Bible Societys edition of 1920, and will at once take its place as an essential reference tool for New Testament and for Syriac studies.Notably, it marks a very successful union of Syriac scholarship with the Electronic Age, specifically the field of Linguistic Computing, since the author has academic qualifications in both computer engineering and Syriac studies. Finally, it witnesses the very welcome alliance of Syrian Orthodox and Western academic scholarship. It is designed to be of service not only to western scholars and students, but also to clergy and laity of the Syriac churches, for whom the Peshitta is their Authorized Version.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the light of the research undertaken in this book the author concludes that the so called "anti-Jewish" texts in Johannine Gospel are not directed against the Jews being an ethnic or religious community. The object of the polemic and attacks is not the entire Jewish nation across the span of all the ages but a group of the Jewish leaders or opponents to Jesus in the First Century AD. Looking through the prism of the aposynagogal polemics, one can notice that the state of tension between the Johannine community and the rabbinic Judaism is inter-Jewish, not anti-Jewish, in character. The source of the polemical language of the Fourth Gospel is the Christological discussion in the historical and sociological context (the Messianic confession, the excommunication from the Synagogue, the presence of Samaritans in the Johannine community, the struggle for the preservation of the identity).

They include studies on the Greek of the Septuagint; Hebrew (Biblical and Qumran); Aramaic (Old, Offical and Qumran; Syriac and Neo-Aramaic); Canaanite (Amarna, Ugaritic and Phoenician-Punic); Medieval Jewish exegesis and Karaite studies. M.F.J. Baasten and W.Th. van Peursen, two former students of Muraoka at Leiden, have edited the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book closes the gap for beginners who want to study the Amharic language and had difficulties in finding the right grammar for this purpose: The first grammar of Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia, was published by Hiob Ludolf in 1698. The Amharic grammar published by Praetorius in 1879 is based on Amharic religious texts and on scattered material, usually composed by missionaries. A milestone in the study of Amharic is Marcel Cohen's Traite de langue amharique (1936), but this grammar, too is not completely suited for beginners since the author's generalizations are at times aimed at linguists. The grammar that comes closest to the concept of a beginner's grammar is that of C.H. Dawkin (1960), yet this grammar is extremely short, does not give examples and does not introduce the student to the intricacies of the language. The new book gives all the grammatical forms and the sentences of the present grammar in Amharic script and in phonetic transcription. The illustrative examples have a free and a literal translation. This procedure should likewise prove to be useful for the Semitist as well as for the general linguist.
