Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.

Book excerpt: The objective of this project is to use computational fluid dynamics to examine the flow around three Schiebe head forms: 2 inches, 10 inches, and 20 inches in diameter. The flow around the 20-inch head form was examined experimentally in the Large Cavitation Channel by making laser Doppler velocimetry measurements. Computational analysis was used to determine the flow around all three head forms. The computational results and the experimental results were compared. The objective of the comparison was to determine if a computational model could be used to represent accurately a physical model in a test tunnel. The results showed that both viscous and inviscid flow calculations represented the experiment well. The inviscid analysis was much less costly in time and resources while still providing useful results. inviscid flow calculations seem to be the best choice for a preliminary prediction technique to support experimental investigations. This report presents a description of the experimental and computational methods used, a detailed comparison of results, and an analysis of the comparison. computational fluid dynamics, Large Cavitation Channel, Schiebe, cavitation head forms, laser Doppler velocimetry.

Book excerpt: Marine propulsors are key components of the many thousands of ships and boats operating in oceans, lakes, and rivers around the world. The performance of propulsors are important for the environmental impact of ships, underwater noise impact on aquatic fauna, and crew and passenger comfort and safety. This book presents nineteen papers devoted to the hydrodynamics of different types of marine propulsors (conventional propellers, thrusters, and novel solutions). Most of the papers are extended papers from the sixth International Symposium on Marine Propulsors (SMP 2019). Several of the papers deal with cavitation, vortices, and energy saving devices. The papers present high-quality research performed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Experimental Fluid Dynamics (EFD) as well Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Ship Hydrodynamics, Second Edition, introduces the reader to modern ship hydrodynamics. It describes experimental and numerical methods for ship resistance and propulsion, maneuvering, seakeeping, hydrodynamic aspects of ship vibrations, and hydrodynamic options for fuel efficiency, as well as new developments in computational methods and model testing techniques relating to marine design and development.Organized into six chapters, the book begins with an overview of problems and approaches, including the basics of modeling and full-scale testing, prediction of ship hydrodynamic performance, and viscous flow computations. It proceeds with a discussion of the marine applications of computational fluid dynamics and boundary element methods, factors affecting ship hydrodynamics, and simple design estimates of hydrodynamic quantities such as resistance and wake fraction. Seakeeping of ships is investigated with respect to issues such as maximum speed in a seaway, route optimization (routing), structural design of the ship with respect to loads in seaways, and habitation comfort and safety of people on board. Exercises and solutions, formula derivations, and texts are included to support teaching or self-studies.This book is suitable for marine engineering students in design and hydrodynamics courses, professors teaching a course in general fluid dynamics, practicing marine engineers and naval architects, and consulting marine engineers. Combines otherwise disparate information on the factors affecting ship hydrodynamics into one practical, go-to resource for successful design, development and construction. Updated throughout to cover the developments in computational methods and modeling techniques since the first edition published more than 10 years ago. New chapters on hydrodynamic aspects of ship vibrations and hydrodynamic options for fuel efficiency, and increased coverage of simple design estimates of hydrodynamic quantities such as resistance and wake fraction. Book excerpt: Cavitation refers to a distinctive occurrence within liquid flows where there is a phase change process involving the rapid transformation of liquid into vapour in regions of low pressure, followed by collapsing or implosion when pressure rises again. The study of cavitation dates back to the late 19th century. While the term “cavitation” was originally coined by R. E. Froude and first documented by Barnaby and Thornycroft in 1895, the concept had been speculated upon much earlier by L. Euler in his 1754 theory on water turbines. However, the phenomenon of cavitation was initially observed and examined by Barnaby and Parsons in 1893. They identified that the formation of vapour bubbles on propeller blades had led to the failure of the sea trial of the British high-speed warship HMS Daring in 1885. In 1895, Parsons established the first water tunnel dedicated to cavitation research, revealing the connection between cavitation and propeller damage. The theoretical groundwork for cavitation research was laid by Rayleigh in 1917, as he successfully addressed the collapse of an empty cavity within a substantial liquid mass. Since then, numerous research work has been published on cavitating flow.
