Excerpt: ... a cubic metre, or a little belter than a cubic yard. o able as it was before that period. One of the witnesses, an extensive iron-master of Champagne, says: --" We made some profit when we sold at 450f. (the 1040 kilogrammes), and we are now losers in selling at 500f.; the cause of which is, that, in 1819, the banne, of charcoal cost 18f. 3c, while it now costs 37f. 50c." The proprietors of wood (the landowners) received the profits. In 1818 the manufacture of bar-iron amounted to 800,000 quintals, that of cast-iron to 1,400,000 quintals--all smelted with charcoal. The increased price of wood having led to the use of cheaper fuel, a vast number of the forges established by the new comers were erected on the English plan. We find that of 1,521,881 quintals, forged in 1828, 476,116, or nearly one-third, were made with coal. The difference in the cost of production is surprising. One of the witnesses says, that to produce 1040 kilogrammes, of ordinary iron smelted with charcoal, he is obliged to use five bannes and a quarter of charcoal, which, at 41f. 50c. per banne, amounts to 207f. 50c, whilst, to produce 1000 kilogrammes with coke, he has only to employ 1700 kilogrammes of coal, at 49f. 50c per 1000 kilogrammes, which amount only to 84f. 15c. The proportion of the cost of coal to charcoal is nearly as nine to twenty. The difference in the expense of labour and carriage is not less striking. M. Pasquier says that labour and carriage form at least, on the average, 43 per cent, of the prix de revient of the wood-made iron, whilst in that of the coke-made iron they do not reach higher than 29 per cent. The reporter avers that "the average price of iron smelted with charcoal is 49f. 12c, and the average price smelted with coal...

Excerpt: ... iron there far below the cost of making, throw large and irregular quantities into our ports, disturbing the regular course of industry here; breaking down our markets, and carrying ruin at each such invasion, into many establishments. If we ask aid against such irregularities, it is no more than we should be obliged to do, if the manufacture in the United States were as greatly developed as in Great Britain, and enjoying, in all respects, equal advantages. If that were the case, each of the equally powerful competitors would seek to relieve their home markets in seasons of depression, by thrusting the rejected surplus upon his rival; and each would seize the opportunity of high prices in the other to make large exports, until both markets, unable to maintain any high prices to compensate for unfavorable periods, would sink into hopeless depression, and the business perish or be greatly impaired. Against such consequences both would appeal to their respective governments for protection; not for monopoly; for that security against ruinous fluctuations, and that regularity in sales indispensable to the success of industry. Competitors at home can observe their mutual progress, and take their measures of defence in time, but that competition which comes from abroad, cannot be watched, nor preparation made for its sudden inroads. If the British manufacturer is prevented from flooding our markets at less than the average upon which his business thrives, a mere revenue duty will be ample protection against the great advantage he enjoys, of employing labor at less than half the cost paid in the United States. 11 Among those most deeply interested in the vigor and prosperity of our iron manufactures are the farmers who furnish food, and the...

This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989 this study examines some new facets in the development of the iron industry in the USA between 1839 and 1921 through the study of an individaul form, namely the Thoms Iron Company, one of the leading merchant furnace companies. It charts the end of the anthracite iron age and the changes which brought about the advent of open-hearth steel and integrated steel works. The book discusses the problems the managers of the firm faced with the appearance of industrial innovations which tended to undermine their firm's very existence and provided a new set of optimal conditions necessary for the survival of the firm. It provides a clear understanding of the destructive forces of industrial innovation and the place of creative entrepreneurship in the survival of the firm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, this book provides the first full study of the carefully planned rising of south Wales miners and ironworkers in 1839 and of its collapse at the confrontation with soldiers of the 45th regiment of Newport. It examines not only the rising itself, but the factors that made it, if not inevitable, then likely. It argues that while the workers’ movement was an immediate response to the grim circumstances of the workplace, it was also deeply rooted in the centuries-old Welsh experience of repression. This title will be of particular interest to students of Victorian political and social history and well as the history of Wales.
