It issued first a History of General Methodism in three volumes, giving an account of the denomination in all parts of the world, centralizing in the Wesleyan, or parent body, a work which has been reproduced by four or five competing publishers in England; second, a particular History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in four volumes - the fourth volume just out. These works have received the strongest indorsements not only by Methodists, but other authorities on both sides of the Atlantic. They meet a great want of the Church, and a demand of the general religious public. The author employed by the Concern to prepare them - Dr. Abel Stevens - has devoted his utmost power to them, and has, by thorough research, added more than one third to the data of our history, as given by preceding writers. These works are now a staple part of the property of the Church's own Publishing House: they have cost it much, and will yield much to its interest if properly patronized. There are many of our people, however, who cannot spare the means for works as large as these. It has been our design from the beginning, therefore, to present them in cheaper form, that the whole Church may be supplied with them. When propositions were made by other parties to our author (with the most liberal offers of compensation) to prepare a smaller work for more popular circulation, he promptly declined them on the ground that it would be an indirect interference with the Book Concern's right of property in the work, and contrary to the understood rules of the trade in such cases, especially as the Concern designed in due time to issue an abridgment. Murray contributes to the history of American Christianity and the Civil Rights movement by examining a national institution--the Methodist Church (after 1968 the United Methodist Church)--and how it dealt with the racial conflict centered in the South. Murray begins his study by tracing American Methodism from its beginnings to the secession of many African Americans from the church and the establishment of separate northern and southern denominations in the nineteenth century. He then details the reconciliation and compromise of many of these segments in 1939 that led to the unification of the church. This compromise created the racially segregated church that Methodists struggled to eliminate over the next thirty years. During the Civil Rights movement, American churches confronted issues of racism that they had previously ignored. No church experienced this confrontation more sharply than the Methodist Church. When Methodists reunited their northern and southern halves in 1939, their new church constitution created a segregated church structure that posed significant issues for Methodists during the Civil Rights movement. Of the six jurisdictional conferences that made up the Methodist Church, only one was not based on a geographic region: the Central Jurisdiction, a separate conference for "all Negro annual conferences." This Jim Crow arrangement humiliated African American Methodists and embarrassed their liberal white allies within the church. The Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision awakened many white Methodists from their complacent belief that the church could conform to the norms of the South without consequences among its national membership. Murray places the struggle of the Methodist Church within the broader context of the history of race relations in the United States. He shows how the effort to destroy the barriers in the church were mirrored in the work being done by society to end segregation. Immensely readable and free of jargon, Methodists and the Crucible of Race, 1930-1975, will be of interest to a broad audience, including those interested in the Civil Rights movement and American church history.

Next to the official journals and other documents of the different denominations, the most important authorities are the personal journals of Wesley, Coke, Asbury, Garrettson, and other founders; the histories of Jesse Lee, Nathan Bangs, and Abel Stevens, in particular the last-named, whose works are invaluable and deserve the everlasting gratitude of both English and American Methodism. Bond, Emory, and Wakeley rendered valuable service; and Neely and Tigert pursued, in the order of time in which their names are placed, important investigations into the subjects comprehended under the titles of their works, and displayed the results in a clear and comprehensive manner. "The Wesley Memorial Volume," edited by Clark, and the "Lives of Methodist Bishops," edited by Flood and Hamilton, are very useful, the latter containing an immense amount of information in small compass. The special histories of the various branches of American Methodism, and the biographies of their founders, are indispensable. Among the biographies none surpasses Paine's "Life of McKendree," which is a mine of antiquarian knowledge and a repository of the writings of McKendree, Soule, and other controlling minds among those who gave Methodism its final forms. The "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South," by Gross Alexander, treats many interesting phases of the life and growth of that body, and afforded aid in investigations required by the plan of this work. The works of Lucius C. Matlack on the slavery controversy admirably fill a place occupied by no other productions. The reports of different organizations, the minutes of Annual Conferences, the "Methodist Magazine," the reviews, and the files of the weekly periodicals of American Methodism have been searched, and a large mass of unpublished epistolary correspondence and other manuscript examined. It is believed that the bibliography here given will afford sufficient indication to those who may desire to examine authorities.
