Book excerpt: Comprehensive and richly illustrated, Close Harmony traces the development of the music known as southern gospel from its antebellum origins to its twentieth-century emergence as a vibrant musical industry driven by the world of radio, television, recordings, and concert promotions. Marked by smooth, tight harmonies and a lyrical focus on the message of Christian salvation, southern gospel--particularly the white gospel quartet tradition--had its roots in nineteenth-century shape-note singing. The spread of white gospel music is intricately connected to the people who based their livelihoods on it, and Close Harmony is filled with the stories of artists and groups such as Frank Stamps, the Chuck Wagon Gang, the Blackwood Brothers, the Rangers, the Swanee River Boys, the Statesmen, and the Oak Ridge Boys. The book also explores changing relations between black and white artists and shows how, following the civil rights movement, white gospel was influenced by black gospel, bluegrass, rock, metal, and, later, rap. With Christian music sales topping the $600 million mark at the close of the twentieth century, Close Harmony explores the history of an important and influential segment of the thriving gospel industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive biographical annotation about the author and his life Book I. The treatise opens with a short statement on the subject of the authority of the Evangelists, their number, their order, and the different plans of their narratives. Augustine then prepares for the discussion of the questions relating to their harmony, by joining issue in this book with those who raise a difficulty in the circumstance that Christ has left no writing of His own, or who falsely allege that certain books were composed by Him on the arts of magic. He also meets the objections of those who, in opposition to the evangelical teaching, assert that the disciples of Christ at once ascribe more to their Master than He really was, when they affirmed that He was God, and inculcated what they had not been instructed in by Him, when they interdicted the worship of the gods. Against these antagonists he vindicates the teaching of the Apostles, by appealing to the utterances of the Prophets, and by showing that the God of Israel was to be the sole object of worship, who also, although He was the only Deity to whom acceptance was denied in former times by the Romans, and that for the very reason that He prohibited them from worshipping other gods along with Himself, has now in the end made the Empire of Rome subject to His Name, and among all nations has broken their idols in pieces through the preaching of the Gospel, as He had promised by His prophets that the event should be. Book II. In this book Augustine undertakes an orderly examination of the Gospel according to Matthew, on to the narrative of the Supper, and institutes a comparison between it and the other Gospels by Mark, Luke, and John, with the view of demonstrating a complete harmony between the four Evangelists throughout all these sections. Book III. This book contains a demonstration of the harmony of the Evangelists from the accounts of the Supper on to the end of the Gospel, the narratives given by the several writers being collated, and the whole arranged in one orderly connection. Book IV. This book embraces a discussion of those passages which are peculiar to Mark, Luke, or John.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study the life, ministry, and teaching of Jesus Christ in harmony—with all the relevant material from the Gospels placed side by side on the page and in chronological sequence. The goal of this volume by author and teacher J. Dwight Pentecost is to help you know Jesus better by getting a clearer picture of him through the four Gospels—the books that directly depict his life, his ministry, and his heart. To show the harmony of the gospels, passages are arranged in parallel columns when more than one is cited so that you can easily see the accounts beside one another. This simple, logical presentation of the complete parallel text with the outline greatly simplifies your study of Christ's life. A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ is ideal for use with its companion volume, The Words and Works of Jesus Christ, a comprehensive study of the life of Christ. A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ also makes an outstanding parallel Scripture text for any study of the gospels or the life of Christ. All Scripture is in the New International Version (NIV).

Book excerpt: One of the great hallmarks of the four canonical gospels is that despite their many similarities, each of them presents Jesus in a slightly different way. Even so, there were far more than four gospels that emerged during the early years of Christianity. In fact, there were, dozens, perhaps hundreds of gospels, each focusing different periods of Jesus' life, as well as differing aspects of his teaching and ministry. Could there be the same unity between these gospels as there is between the four? One way to find out would be to combine them all into a single work and simply see what kind of Jesus they collectively present. The Super Gospel represents the first systematic effort to integrate all of the ancient gospels into a single readable text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gospel harmonies were inevitable. One of the first impulses of someone studying a teaching or an event in Jesus' life is to seek as many perspectives on that event as possible. Around AD 160 Tatian compiled a single narrative of the four Gospels, reducing the number of verses from 3,780 (four separate Gospels) to 2,769 verses without excluding any event or teaching from the life of Jesus. This Holman Christian Standard Harmony of the Gospels builds on a tradition of harmonization begun in the 19TH century by John A. Broadus and continued by his protege, A.T. Robertson. The HCSB Harmony contains the full text of the each of the four Gospels in the Holman Christian Standard Bible. The Harmony contains interpretive and clarifying notes by a number of scholars, some with differing views on the relationship between various Gospel accounts. Beyond the Harmony, this volume includes articles designed to address issues that arise when one compares the four Gospels and seeks to give an integrated account of the life and teachings of Jesus. The HCSB Harmony is unique in that it contains eight four-color maps that illuminate the life and ministry of Jesus. This resource will be valuable to pastors, lay Bible teachers, and will serve well as a primary textbook in college and seminary courses on the Gospels and on the Life and Teachings of Jesus. Robertson's classic account of the New Testament Gospels arranges the chronology of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John side-by-side, that readers may compare and understand how each book recounts the life of Jesus Christ. A superb and classic arrangement of the Gospels, A. T. Robertson's effort was itself based upon the Gospel Harmony of John Albert Broadus, an American Baptist pastor famous for his Biblical scholarship in the 19th century. With Broadus' template to hand, Robertson sets about presenting the four Gospel books with an annotated clarity, that those interested in the Biblical narrative of Jesus may achieve superb insight. Passage by passage, verse by verse, Robertson works his way through the Gospel narrations. The birth, education, ministerial teachings, death and resurrection of Christ are examined sequentially. Robertson's chronicle is thorough, noting where the Gospels quote the Old Testament; we learn how each of the Gospel books differ yet complement one another in communicating Christ's message to all mankind. Readers will realize that the four Gospels depict episodes in the life of Christ differently from one another, particularly where Jesus' various parables and teachings are concerned. The finer details, such as those concerning Christ's birth and his sentencing to death by Pontius Pilate, are astutely observed. With Robertson's cogent and chronological narrative to hand, readers can better appreciate the phases of Jesus' life and the gravity of His deeds and sermons. This reprint offers the complete analysis, together with the lists and comparative phrases appended at the conclusion of the original edition, and the map of Palestine at the time of Christ. The introductory outlines are preserved, that the reader may swiftly conceive of the author's methodology. The ample page size allows for simpler referencing, while the individual passages, tables and their notes are arranged to conduce swift and gratifying comprehension of the Biblical lore of Jesus Christ.

He is still the buzz at barber shops and corner cafes. He is still talked about and against. He pricks our curiosity, sparks our imagination, and even earns our ire. Who is he, really? You know he's no politician, but he still transforms nations. He's no social activist, but he is the genesis of who knows how many hospitals, orphanages, and innumerable acts of kindness. A psychotherapist? Hardly. But how many of us 'Humpty Dumpties' has he put back together again?! This peasant carpenter has built himself a kingdom immeasurably greater than his earthly enemies could have imagined. What are we to make of him? Please accept my deepest apologies right up front, for this book will not help answer that question. However, it may help answer this one: What is this man to make of me?"
